This is the first peep this how all the peep crazy had started.

 Occasionally, users will create food-themed characters and group together on them, such as with Skittles characters, etc.

Peeps are bird shaped marshmallowish treats.

I believe this is what the character's creator was basing their character on, and others followed. A cute little character, don't you think?
