Title: Mac/Linux Setup Updated for 1.16
Post by: razmirz on June 10, 2016, 09:49:16 pm
I'm disappointed to see complaints about no presets, maps, items, packs, etc
DON'T JUST FOLLOW THE PICTURES READ THE THREAD
I put a good amount of time into it. If you read it all! It should answer everything!

If your expecting something similar to the old Mac version I'm afraid I'm going to disappointed.
I don't own a Mac and its always been an issue getting access to one.
I do however use Linux and luckily PlayOnLinux has a Mac Version PlayOnMac.
PlayOnLinux still uses "WINE" to run programs which is the same thing the old versions were made with.

So down to business.

Im going to assume as Mac/Linux user you know how to install things on your own operating system.

Mac users only you need XQuartz download and install from here https://www.xquartz.org/ (https://www.xquartz.org/)
If you are still running Leopard you need the old version here https://www.xquartz.org/releases/XQuartz-2.6.3.html (https://www.xquartz.org/releases/XQuartz-2.6.3.html)
If your Mac is older than that I'm afraid your out of luck....

You now either need PlayOnLinux or PlayOnMac

https://www.playonlinux.com/en/download.html (https://www.playonlinux.com/en/download.html)
https://www.playonmac.com/en/download.html (https://www.playonmac.com/en/download.html)

Download my PlayOnLinux Install Script from here https://static.feral-heart.com/FHunix.POL.zip and extract it.

Now just follow the steps :)

The first screen :D

Tools > Run a local script

Next

Browse

Pick the POL Script you downloaded earlier.

Next

As its a custom script I've made its not signed by the PlayOnLinux team this is perfectly safe

Again because its not signed you need to accept and next

Next

Next

If it runs slow reinstall using the light option.

Install

Finish

Now you can double click and run the game (note it might take 2 runs to make it work due to switching between directx and opengl)

If you highlight FeralHeart you will see this list on the left the "open the directory" option might be handy to get to the exports presets etc.

Now you have FeralHeart on your Linux/Mac computer

Enjoy

Thank you Raz for this. Even though I don't use a Mac, it will come in handy if I ever get one, and it will also help a lot of Mac users.

I'm still not sure how to get the FHunix.POL, every time i try to use the websetup it tells me there is no source code for the script and I can't continue from there.
I'm sorry since it looks like you worked really hard to make this tutorial, and if it weren't for the script thing this would of been a real big help.

Thanks for making this! it helped a lot, even though I already had XQuartz and PlayOnMac!

I am having a bit of an issue though, every time I go on, it seems fine, but I am never able to connect with the map server. I think it is because it is set on the Direct3D9 video mode. Every time I change it to the OpenGL it crashes before I even get in! I am out of ideas and don't know what to do about it, thanks for the great guide though! It was fantastic while it lasted!  :D

I tried this on a different Mac before and it just worked beautifully without any errors at all! I'd assumed that it'd be the same case with the same type of Mac laptop. Anyway, I'll manage to skip through the steps to installing it, but when selecting the FHetc.POL, it comes up as FHetc.POL.zip. So, I'll click through, but in the script thing that requires a signing(?) it says that the file could not be found and the script doesn't match up at all.

After that, I updated my X11 to the newest version, but I think it still might be causing me some trouble. Of course, I'll run through this a dozen times with PlayMyMac guidebooks on the sidelines until my brain fries, but it's nice to get a quick answer from people that really understand the app all together already versus one(me) whom doesn't understand it at all. I just got off after maybe 20-30 mins on it, but so hope to return and see if the update helped me out any.

Thanks for reading this! Would appreciate any replies or possible solutions to my current situation. x2 Thank you!

Hey again! I'd like to report that it was all a little mistake when downloading the file. The first few times I downloaded it as "save file" and it didn't work. However, I soon realized that it was supposed to be installed underArchive Utility. After that, it worked perfectly! I should note though that I was using FireFox. My Safari doesn't work very well right now, but on the other computer it worked fine, but didn't give me the installing option like FireFox did. Well, I guess that wraps things up on my end! Thanks for the tutorial! ^^

You have to extract the POL out of the zip.

If I upload the POL on its own its just opens in the browser to it had to be zip'd

Hope this helps!

Thank you so much for making this, but every time I try to run the game it crashes. I followed all the instructions and my computer is pretty new. I haven't gotten El Captain yet, but i'm assuming because it's newer then Leopard it should work anyways.

@razmirz I didn't need the script or the FHSetupUNIX.exe for both Arch Linux and Fedora Linux. I simply used the torrent download from the site and installed it on both a clean PlayOnLinux and WINE prefix, so I think this only applies to OSX.

What does the Linux script do anyways? Install dependencies or DirectX 9?
Title: Re: Mac/Linux Setup
Post by: razmirz on June 18, 2016, 11:32:32 pm
The only different with the unix setup is it doesn't try to install the shortcuts or try to auto install directx which just causes an error.

And yes it does add dx9 after comments from people saying that there game didn't work until I was installed.

If your already familiar with wine I didn't expect you to need this page. Its for those who aren't and then I'm trying to keep it simple.

I was just curious, but thanks for telling me. Script might be useful but I'm running the game with OpenGL and it works perfectly fine. c:

Everytime I try to run it, it crashes

I have the same problem too, and everything in the instructions happened according to plan, till I tried actually ed to play the game. I got a black window and another smaller window that says...

"The program FeralHeart.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I don't know if this will help with a "Serious problem" bug, or if its my computer. Feral Heart is my favorite game and I'm supper sad I can no longer play it at all. If you have any tips or a way to solve this that would be very much appreciated and might help others with this same problem.

If it is crashing, you should click "Create a Shortcut" instead of running it and then open through the desktop. That fixed the crashing for me. Also, installing maps/markings/items etc. is possible. On PlayonMac/Linux, you should select FeralHeart and then click "Open the directory", which will then open the regular FeralHeart folder which you can then install things just like normal. Hope I helped!

Everything was running smoothly until you said:

"Pick the POL Script you downloaded earlier."

I didn't see an POL Script on my desktop and this may be a stupid question but, where and how did you download the POL Script? I saw some other reply's having the same problem.

If anyone knows where to get the POL Script please notify me. I would really like to get back to playing Feral-Heart and I'm sorry razmirz for having to post about a problem I'm having, even though it appears you worked so hard on this tutorial, and I am very grateful for that. :)

Hello there,

So I have looked high and low on this forum for a possible solution to my problem, and cannot find one. My troubles are with putting map files into the FeralHeart folder, and having the map's portal showing up in the Cape of Distant Words. See, I run this game on a Mac, and so far all my other downloads for markings and objects have worked fine. However, after placing all the map's files into the exports section of the FH folder, I return to the Cape to find no portal. I have tried putting the Map's files into different FH sub-folders, but nothing seems to work. I've even checked through the Cape itself in case the portal was just invisible for some reason.

Thank you for all the help,

Try those instructions above and look in your home folder. You should find a folder called .playonlinux. Go inside that folder, then a folder named "wineprefix." Within that folder, you should be able to find the virtual drive you created. Inside there, you should find a folder named FeralHeart where you can access your files. c:

Dont forget about logging in through the Website!

At the top right where it says "Play Game" press that.

make sure you log in through there FIRST! then wait at least a few minutes before you open the Feralheart Application

Alright, so I did everything and it worked for a couple of hours. I added item packs and more, and that worked fine. BUT, when I tried to add a preset it stopped working. I have deleted everything and re-installed it, and it STILL didn't work. It just kept on crashing. ;-; I feel like an idiot now! It says "The program FeralHeart.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

What were the preset files? And what were they named?
Did you make the preset?
If the preset files are .png or .jpg, you're good to go as I've read. And the files have to be named the same as the folder (ex. Preset_3head would go in the Preset_3 folder, Preset_4body would go in Preset_4..etc...) and also PUT YOUR FILES IN THE "MY_PRESETS" FOLDER! IF YOU PUT IT IN THE "PRESETS" FOLDER, IT WON'T WORK!

Just downloaded FeralHeart today, on my newly installed Ubuntu x64 16.04, the lastest WineHQ, PlayonLinux, your script, the downloading and installation, everything works like charm !

Great job on this one, Raz ! :D

Before the recent Update of June 9, i used to run FeralHeart directly with WineHQ and mod it, much more easier now !  ;D

(I'm not Raz but) I'm applying the same principle to mac, but if you have Play on Linux, you click on the FH icon in the Play on Linux window and then click "open file directory" you should be able to follow the initial prompts that are given for the markings and just place it in the folders required in the directory..

Alright. I've been a member, an active member, since 2010 and maybe even 2009. I've loved the game, it's grand, and has a specific charm about it that no other MMORPG provides. My only problem that I've encountered is that it isn't very compatable with Macs, which even then I was able to work around and still be able to access to Feral Heart. Although now since this huge update I cannot seem to redownload the new version. I tried, and my computer (a Macbook Pro) got an extremely bad virus from the software needed to download in order to have the new Feral Heart. Just to describe the virus, it forced random adds onto my computer screen. Also my computer needed, and still needs, Adobe Flash Player and I'm not sure if that's what gave it the virus in the first place. I talked an associate of Mac on the phone, and she had told me that she's heard of Adobe Flash giving people problems, even though it's supposed to be an application approved by Mac themselves, and let me know of a couple alternatives that provide similar allowances. She had also advised me that applications that allow games normally ran by Windows to run on Macs can very treturous involving invasive

My question is will there be a more Mac friendly version of the new Feral Heart like there was before? If I remember correctly the version before this one had an option for Macs on the actual download page, not just another application to download onto the computer to allow the current version through. I'm aware that this may be an unfixable problem, and I might have to find an alternative, I'm just eagar to log back in to the game.

Also, questions regarding windows does not apply to this thread.

Make sure you're using the right wineskin ( ? )
Another thing you should check for is making sure you don't have any duplicate particles..
You can also change the orge material file and change your rendering subsystems and hope that does something.
And make sure that the game is in the correct place wherever it needs to be saved on your hard drive. If you have any questions, feel free to post on the Help Thread. Maybe someone can assist you further and better on there. o:

Hi, thanks for the tutorial, but I did run into a problem while loading the game.

After double clicking on the new icon, the "OGRE Engine Rendering Setup" appeared like normal, but after clicking 'ok', a black screen appeared along with an error window.

If I click 'close', both windows disappear.

I'm not entirely sure what went wrong, but if you know what the problem is, that would be great. I followed the instructions and downloaded what was necessary.

Note:
I don't know if this has something to do with the problem, but after successfully creating the new app, I deleted FHunix.POL.

This happened to me so many times. i had to re install a few times.

Occasionally my game will crash while playing, and commonly 5 mins into the game due to textures going missing. then as i restart the game its all fine until the same happens again

Hi there. Are you using a Mac or Linux? Or is this a PC issue?
Regardless of your Operating System, make sure you are logging into the login tab here: https://feral-heart.com/login/index.php (https://feral-heart.com/login/index.php)

It is also best to ask for help in the Help Boards (https://feral-heart.com/smf/index.php?board=37.0)

Quoting both.

As you log into the "Play Game" index, PLEASE keep that page open AT ALL TIMES while playing the game.

Go to google and simply search up
"Feralheart Podium Mod"
"Feralheart Interface Mod"
"Feralheart HD"
"Feralheart Mass Markings"
"Feralheart Items"

all these should be at the top of the list when found.
once downloaded, be sure to read the instructions inside.
have a lovely day

Change rendering systems manually by going to Feralheart > Ogre.cfg
Open Ogre.CFG with textedit/notepad/xcode and on the top replace anything that says "OpenGL" with "Direct3D9"

IT WORKS!

I did everything the way we were instructed to and I still have crashing problems. I keep the play game tab open and open it before I open FH, I've tried launching from PlayOnMac several times , I've tried creating a desktop shortcut and launching it from that several times and I've tried fully restarting my Mac but it STILL crashes. How did you get it working???

Try to play it from the folder it's installed in, instead of making a shortcut.

I remember when I played on MAC that I had to keep it in the folder for it to even save screenshots properly.

It'll randomly crash even on the normal PC version if that is the main concern.

Not much to be done to fix that, happens with most games.

I believe it's more prone to do so on MACintosh because it wasn't oriiginally planned to be on there and it's a bit of a weird port.

Well... it was planned, problem was that we couldn't access the source code for the one for mac.

Ok I'm pretty sure I'm doing everything right because everything has gone smoothly so far. The only problem is that when I try to actually open the game through PlayOnMac, it says there was an error and the game crashed. This is probably because the files are  very outdated and probably should be updated if the staff is still around in this game since I haven't seen any recent updates.

Very common,  Check this thread. (https://feral-heart.com/smf/index.php?topic=63596.0) (clickable link should be those underlined words)

Looks like you last posted on the forums (that i know of) back when there wasn't an extra security step in place, hence i pointed this out.

Thank you! This worked for me as well.

Do you have any duplicate files in FeralHeart/Media/Particles? That may be the problem.
If not, let me know.

If you're on a Mac, try using Direct3D9 as your rendering subsystem, not OpenGL (you can change it under 'Options' in the main menu), as I've found it to be a lot more stable.

Maybe this could help.

It's already on Direct3D9 but it switches from OpenGL to Direct randomly? Im unsure of what to do.. I can't edit any of the files because I don't have an app that supports it so idk?

The game will run without the update, but you will not be able to connect to the front server to play online.

If you're wondering too about being able to play on Mac, this is possible with the update although a stable version is not yet available. Downloading the Windows version of 1.17 and opening it with PlayOnMac should work for ya for the time being~

Hi! It is best to make a new forum post when requesting assistance as it is much easier for people to locate, however as a mac user I can help you install the game.

I listed the steps previously:  here  (https://feral-heart.com/smf/index.php?topic=69627.0)
