Whenever I download the game from the download link it downloads as a virtual machine how do I fix this so I can play

Try getting the torrent version of the game instead. If you're unsure of how to use the torrent, just download uTorrent (https://www.utorrent.com/) and then click on the torrent version on the downloads page, which will open up in uTorrent and download.
