Title: How to Draw More People to this Game - [UPDATE: 2/9/19]
Post by: DylanCheetah on November 19, 2018, 09:37:14 pm
I thought of some ideas to help increase the number of people playing this game. I think that this game should at least have its own Wikipedia article. How about Facebook/Twitter account(s)?
Title: Re: How to Draw More People to this Game
Post by: Jango_Fett on November 19, 2018, 09:48:42 pm
there was a twitter but it fell into disuse ages ago, if there was one at all
i'm pretty sure there was also a facebook page, see above

with the kind of game that feral heart is, where all you do is walk around and talk, i dont really see how social media could save it.
the tumblr account couldnt.

a wikipedia page would be useful, but uh
yeah i don't think it would stay in a condition the staff necessarily approve of.

What Jango said is true.
However, there is already an event going on in the FH communtiy discord server where users advertise the game on
different social media platforms, or forums of their liking. This is an excellent way of getting new members in.
Personally, I dont beleive many people would join or take liking to FH due to the lack of content. Which is why I see it
as another social platform but one that you can express your creativity on.

I dont think a Facebook page is a bad idea. The one that was up seemed to have died. The Tumblr I know exists but I dont know
if that sparks attention.
Id say advertising is the best

FeralHeart does actually have its own Wiki and `Wikifur` page, but they are too vacant and havent been updated

Why doesn't someone update them?

Because those accounts where made by staff/members that aren't active anymore, and we don't have the password access to update it etc.
We have the Official FH Tumblr (http://feralheart-official.tumblr.com/) and the FH DA (https://www.deviantart.com/feral-heart-art) page for now.

While it's not a bad idea at all to expand and advertise FH in different social media platforms, right now we're working with many other things and this is something that could be done at a later time perhaps. ^^

I understand that you are very busy. But my actual question was basically: "Why hasn't anyone updated the wiki info.". I thought that wiki info could be updated by any member of the wiki.

What about making a new Wiki entirely? It would be a fun little thing that member can look on. Kind of like the manual, but more detailed.

I searched "FeralHeart Wiki" and I see there might be some confusion, there are so many wikis, if we make a new wiki, which one is the real wiki?

Perhaps the real one could be labeled "Official" or something along the lines of that so it won't cause anymore confusion than what's already happening.

I was thinking that someone should create a Wikipedia page for Feral Heart. I couldn't find one there. Wikipedia only has an article about Impressive Title.

making a new one still has the issues of wikipedia in general

if you lock it, well, chances are it'll be filled out over a long period of time since the staff are... busy, i guess.

but if you dont lock it, well.

someone may put something up there that no one will like, regardless if it's true or not.

If the staff approve, I would be happy to create a new Wikipedia page for this game. Just let me know! :)
I can create it and lock it so I'm the only one editing it. And I can update it as the game changes.

I'm all in for that idea, good luck!
Hey, if it is approved. Maybe a few more members can aid in editing it. Like a community based Wikipedia page.

I personally don't see a point in advertising until registration is fully open. It will draw people to this site and then they'll realize they can't register and just not bother haha

As for a new Wiki page, no offense Dylan ily <3 I feel an older member, someone who has been around awhile and knows all the ins and outs of the game should create the wiki. If not, at least have one help you edit and add information c:

I've made an outline of the Wikipedia page I want to create for this game:

(https://i.imgur.com/HHOzAAI.png)

Please let me know what you think and offer any suggestions.

p.s. According to Wikipedia, I can request that a page be locked. However, they do have a "vandalism" policy. So if someone did edit the page to add nasty stuff about the game, I could simply revert the page and report/block them if necessary.
Title: Re: How to Draw More People to this Game
Post by: Nowai on November 23, 2018, 08:10:28 am
Oh...actually. Being a former staff of a 'successful-ish' game, we focused more on "keeping regular visitors coming back" rather than focusing solely on bringing new faces into the community. The logical explanation of why these two approaches vary are as follows:

Regular visitors already have built an 'image' of the game, community and its staff. It can be a negative one but usually this is not the case. The pressure usually lies on the staff members to act as role-models (though I'm pretty sure everyone knows this); after all, people come for the game but stay for the community. If members have a positive view of staff, they will begin to feel safe and valued which in turn will help them build a a positive opinion of how things are run (on top of game quality and interaction, though that's not so important if you think about it), then they will keep returning and with a bit of luck they will start voicing the positivity that lies within the community.

On top of staff being friendly, understanding and non-judgemental (and flexible when it comes to punishment, 'cause people can and do change so second chances are a good way to rebuild what was lost); there are also other key factors in helping a community grow and prosper.
______________________________
1. Holding regular events (in-game and forum)
I think this is one of the more important ones. It's a way of getting a large portion of the community to engage together with staff - after all we're here because we share an interest (a.k.a the game) so it's great when members can start enjoying an event meant to bring people closer together - MOTS is actually a great example of that.

2. Building a true image of staff
'Staff are still people, just with responsibilities of maintaining a friendly environment etc.' - When members see staff joking around, participating in member-run events, and acting like 'any well-behaved member would'  the members begin to feel closer, more connected. As stated before, staff are the prime representation of any community. And their approach impacts more than meets the eye.

3. Encouraging creativity
As with any community, there are bound to be very talented and creative users. Encouraging them to share their art, or perhaps them creating small 'OC gifts/drawings' can actually affect the member in many ways. One being that they begin to feel like their talents are not dismissed and/or they begin to discover new ones (which is great, and they'll always refer to the person or community that had helped them discover their newly found passion). Gifts of OC's (more so art of 'friendship groups' and such) can build a stronger bond between already existing members. I mean, come on - if you are having a wild time with your friends in a community and then are gifted an art containing your friends, or particular individuals that have made a huge impact on you (positively), you'd be floored wouldn't you. The whole concept of group drawings are too adorable aaaa! - I swear I've seen either a staffer or member with a group drawing and I felt my heart melt because it showed such 'togetherness'.
______________________________

Coming back to the more-regularly applied approach of focusing just on bringing new members into the community. If you just focus on raising the amount of users in a community, things will eventually crash and burn. You see, a community exists and is kept stable by old and new members alike; old members share amazing/not so amazing memories and stories and can impact the views of a new member, who in turn can start running around spreading positive or negative views which were acquired from regulars. Lacking old members would actually impact a community big time as new members would feel a little lost or confused not having a 'full picture' of a community and how it is run.

Anyway, I think I'll stop babbling because I intended on just giving a few points here and there and ended up expanding on each a little too much. So, I'll actually leave it up to you guys to refer back to this particular comment of mine or apply those points to your own community - after all it's worth giving a shot in my opinion. Have fun and feel free to expand or discuss the content of this post (or feel free to skim over it/ignore it i don't mind).

Have a nice day,
Wai wai.

I appreciate your input Nowai. The way I see it, there seem to be a lot of "old" members already. Which is why I would like to focus my efforts on bringing in new members.

Another point I would like to make, is that some of the old members might get busy with their own busy lives or get tired of playing etc. And without new members, the total number of members will decline over time. A healthy game should have a "flow" of new and old members.

p.s. What "successful-ish" game were you a part of Nowai?

Oh yes, that is very true. Without a constant flow of new members replacing those who left, the forum activity will continue to decline. But in order to bring in new members, we kinda need old members to shed light on the good times and the happy memories. I don't know why but new members tend to trust the older ones because - they have experienced the community environment and have better knowledge of all the 'darker' corners.

Also, I don't feel comfortable with sharing that information publicly due to a dispute which occurred nearing the end of June 2018 causing the whole team to suffer. I'll message you the name and link if you are interested however, for all I know, you might enjoy playing it because mmmm the community is lovely! Or you might have already tried it out, either way I'm now sending a PM your way (:

Personally, I think that we can focus on bringing new and old faces back to the community. Many of the older members have left for various reasons ranging from life in general or FH drama. If we can show how FH has changed in a positive way, then maybe some older faces will return(which quite a few have already returned). However, I think as a community, we can reach out to newer members so long as we keep the social media advertisements active. Instagram had an account for years and suddenly went inactive(whether it was ran by official staff or not, it still worked). There were many people that would inquire about the game when I had posted it on my old, personal art account. People even asked if I had an account to spare just in order to join. Overall, I think that we can make this happen by working as a team and remaining active. ♥

What I think you should do is take a look at one of FeralHearts wikis and maybe start getting some ideas but without copying it! I hope it helps you :)

Here is the latest content update:

Feral Heart is an animal MMORPG with feline and canine characters. The player gets to create their own character and explore various maps that make up the game as well as talk to other players. Many people play games together too.

====History====
Feral Heart was created by KovuLKD. The game came out at the end of 2010. At the start, it only had a few markings and maps. Party chat was added in June 2011. Stretch and roar/howl animations weren't added until July 2011. Feralheart+ (aka feralistic) was released near the end of 2011, it included improvements to the maps as well as high resolution textures. A patch with new emotes and bugfixes was released in December 2011, and the game became available on Macs. The patch also included wings and new maps. Kovu finished work on the game sometime in 2012.

maybe ditch the 'fancy' signage unless it's a bulletin.

i only said it because i see people do that on normal forums for the sake of it looking COOL and RAD and HIP and instead it just looks like a failed attempt at being pretentious.

Here are a few recommendations!

===Lonely Cave===
A cave where no other players appear. Your own private home of sorts. It has a single den and signs with the rules and useful game info.
I would also mention that Lonely Cave is the map that you first spawn in at. Maybe this:
"A map where you first spawn in at where no other players appear. Your own private home of sorts. It has a single den and signs with the rules and useful game info." ??

===Cherika Valley===
A large valley that is great for playing hide-and-seek.
"A large valley full of pines and oaks, dens, and even a mysterious temple structure that is great for playing hide-and-seek."

Plus some spelling fixes:
Kiwimba Beach is actually Kiwimbi Beach
And Fichno Tunnels is Ficho Tunnels ^^

Thanks for the advice Morgra! I've applied the changes:

Feral Heart is an animal MMORPG with feline and canine characters. The player gets to create their own character and explore various maps that make up the game as well as talk to other players. Many people play games together too.

====History====

====Maps====
===Lonely Cave===
A cave where no other players appear. Your own private home of sorts. It has a single den and signs with the rules and useful game info. This is where you initially spawn at.

===The Grounds===
Most people tend to hang out in this savannah map and chat.

===Cape of Distant Worlds===
A map where it is always night. It connects the Lonely Cave to your own private maps.

===Ficho Tunnels===
A series of tunnels that connect The Grounds to Cherika Vally and Kibou Ridge.

===Eastern Pass===
A rugged mountainous region that connects The Grounds to Kiwimba Beach and Bonfire Islands.

===Seaside Grove===
A map with a lot of rocks and trees. It also has a waterfall, some ponds, and a beach.

===Cherika Valley===
A large valley with lots of pine and oak trees that is great for playing hide-and-seek. It even has a mysterious rock formation in the center.

===Kibou Ridge===
A beautiful snowy mountain range with valleys, dens, a stream, some campfires, and even a single glowing crystal. This map was created by Lady_Alizaran. The cave paintings in the dens have inspired various players to come up with lore about the game itself.

===Kiwimbi Beach===
A beautiful beach that also has some waterfalls.

===Zama Grotto===
A series of beautiful underwater caves.

===Bonfire Islands===
A group of islands that have waterfalls and campfires.

====Features====
* 3D Graphics
* Online Multiplayer
* Friend List
* In-Game Chat
* Custom Character Maker (Presets)
* Custom Map Maker
* Custom Object Maker
* Custom Sky Maker

====Activities====
The game iteself doesn't have any activities built-in. However, the players come up with various activities including: tag, hide-and-seek, role-plays, and more.

====Official Activities====
The game staff host various events that are based on holidays as well as additional events that aren't holiday based.

Known Events:
* Summer Party
* Halloween Party
* Holiday Party
* Movie Night
* Official Roleplay Day

I'm collecting some more information for the map descriptions before I post the article.

Heh heh, sorry, but I have to bring it up here since this thread is about marketing...

I play iRacing - an online motor racing simulator - race cars are moving marketing billboards and of course people love painting their cars up with different colors and different logos - who would be the correct person to ask about getting permission to race with Feral-Heart on the side of some of my cars on iRacing? Now before you say... "eh... I don't think marketing to people who play motor racing games is the right kind of audience," truth is that I know there are quite a few furries who play the game and also many of these races are broadcast/live streamed on YouTube where there is a younger audience. For the record, I have been known to race with my "Machungwa63" logo on the side of my car to try and promote my YouTube channel with Lenny the lion, etc. although I don't know how well that's worked... but the car looks neat:

So yeah... back to my original question... who would be the correct person to get permission from to put Feral-Heart on an iRacing car?

Does anyone actually hold the copyright to Feral Heart anymore?
I don't even know if you have to ask anyone.

I would ask the FH staff about it. Also, I know someone who could use some advertising of their new game. I'll ask them if they're interested. Thanks for the great idea! :)

I tried to post the Wikipedia article I wrote for this game, and it said that the article will be rejected unless I add references for the information I collected to write the article. The problem is that I can't use the Feral Heart website as a reference.  :'(

I guess I'm not gonna be able to publish it after all. Sorry.  :(

Maybe I can find another wiki or something...

or refurbish the fandom wiki.
