I don't think you can set a gif as your forum avatar. I haven't really seen anyone else doing it so I assume it's not possible. ;;

edit: omg i just realized
From what was said below, there have been people using tiny gif icons of their characters. But like Lotor said, you might need to get a small gif of it. Also make sure that you're using [img] and [-/img] (without the "-" that's there) instead of [gif] and [/gif]

 I think I've seen some people using gifs as avatars, try finding smaller resolutions?

Like the others said, I think you can only use an animated icon if it's small (100x100 or smaller, and I think the length and width need to be the same)
You can use this - https://ezgif.com/resize, to make the icon smaller and crop it if you need to.

the max height of a .gif avatar should be 120x120, otherwise it wont move.
