Herba's Guide to Re-texturing Things
« on: March 25, 2017, 06:00:20 am »
HELLO FRIENDS!
_________________________
I PUT TOGETHER A LITTLE TUTORIAL ON HOW TO CREATE YOUR OWN TEXTURES FOR PREMADE OBJECTS IN FH. SIMPLE, VERY IMAGE HEAVY SO BE PREPARED. I'M NOT SURE IF THERE'S ANOTHER TUTORIAL ON THIS, BUT I REALLY WANTED TO MAKE ONE! :)

ALRIGHT!!! LET'S GET TO IT. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO CREATE A TEXTURE FROM SCRATCH, START WITH THE BEGINNING. IF YOU ARE USING A PREMADE TEXTURE, SKIP AHEAD TO STEP 4

STEP 1: Using GIMP or another image maker/editor, create a 512x512 canvas, NO GRAYSCALE REQUIRED.
__________________________________________________________

STEP 2: Color your canvas however you wish, use your...IMAGINATION
__________________________________________________________________

STEP 3: After you are done coloring and finishing your texture, click "FILE" in the top right corner, and select "EXPORT AS". Name your image however you want, just don't forget it! Export your texture as a ".JPG" file. (I moved mine to my desktop after this)
____________________________________________________________________

STEP 4: You now need to find your FERALHEART folder. It usually can be found in THIS PC> (C: DRIVE)>FERALHEART>MEDIA>OBJECTS> ______(whatever object you are retexturing, I chose to retexture a rock)
___________________________________________________________

STEP 5: Find the mesh you are going to re-texture, here I am using the "rock", which goes with the "Small Rock (rock1)" mesh. DO NOT CLICK THE .MESH, YOU ARE LOOKING FOR THE .MATERIAL FILE OF THE MESH. I open my files with the notepad application, I feel its easier to work with.
_____________________________________________________________________

STEP 6: I chose to overwrite a previous texture because I'm too lazy to type another. Find whatever texture you'd like to overwrite (I'm not familiar with adding new textures) and scroll down to that line of code. (blue is material name, highlight is texture file)
____________________________________________________

STEP 7: Once you have found the texture, replace the file name with the name of your newly created texture. (highlighted above). You can also change the material name (ex. rockMat5) to something you can remember.
___________________________________________________________

STEP 8: When you're finished with that, save the .material and find the texture that you created. You need to move that image into the SAME OBJECT FOLDER AS THE MESH. Here I added my guidetexture.jpg to my OBJECTS>ROCKS folder. It MUST be titled exactly how you typed it into the material folder.
__________________________________________________________

STEP 9: You are done! Just kidding...OKAY! So now, open your FeralHeart application and scoot your way to the "Object Maker" section in the "Creative Den". Find the mesh you are looking to edit, and create one. Once you have created an object, such as Small Rock (which is rock.material and rock1.mesh), move to the "Mesh" tab. I have highlighted the MATERIAL name. This is not the image name, but the grouping that it was in, like rockMat. I named my material group "example", so I'm proceeding with that.
___________________________________________________________

STEP 10: type the name of the material group...and enter!
_________________________________________________________-

WHOOPIE!
______________________________________

JUST ADD IT TO THE OTHER PARTS OF THE MESH <3(click the sections, you'll see a white outline around the area) AND ENJOYYYY!!
_______________________________________________________

_________________________________________________________________________________

I HOPE THIS WAS HELPFUL! PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF ANYTHING WAS UNCLEAR, I'D LIKE THE FEEDBACK.

I KNOW SOMEONE HAS PROBABLY ALREADY MADE THIS 500 TIMES, BUT I'M TRYING TO GET ACTIVE ON FH AGAIN, AND I'VE WANTED TO DO THIS FOR A WHILE. (mods, message me if this breaks any rules)

THANKS MY FLOOFS!!

I'm not even sure what I'm doing here.

This is an awesome tutorial that's really easy to read and follow- thank you so much for creating this!
I can certainly see myself using this to make some retexturing to things should I ever get bored of the default textures.
