Hello there you wonderful floofs! This'll be a basic tutorial on making characters!
Don't:
Use Neon colors (unless you are making a 'hangout' character) (Take Note: This is 100% acceptable for those making a neon group. Make sure you're not ashamed of how you look <3)
Use unrealistic markings (unless you are making a hangout character)
Use 'Random colors' ex. One color brown, the other red/blue
Mix unrealistic colors (acceptional for hangout characters)
Do:
Blend colors! Ex. Use a color scheme! Use markings to your advantage!
Make it unique! Ex. Make it noticeable in a crowd! Using color schemes can help!
Match it with a story! Wanna add scars? Do it! Make a backstory to go with them!
Use realistic colors! Ex. Browns, whites, blacks, greys.
Be yourself! Overall, be yourself! Make sure your happy with your character as well.
Color Codes:
This wonderful thing allows everybody to be themselves! I Love color codes + blending. You see, Light browns mix very will with slightly darker browns, but not too well with Red-Browns.
IGNORE THE SKYPE THING XD
(Err.. I personally can't stand this, but making something like this is fine, as long as you like it~)

*Gasp* Oh noes! D: The neck and head.. No blending!

Well, I enjoy findind markings that blend well, not simply things that cut randomly when connecting with another body part. The same markings for head, body, and Tail blend well, but we don't wanna be plan :( We wanna be creative! :D
So, lets find some markings that blend well, shall we?

This blends well! But it's all kinda one color.. Well, then lets change up the color scheme!
Color Schemes are related to Color Codes. Their both colors, but color scheme are the 'Template' of your character. A good color scheme is maybe Black. Colors that are related to black, such as very dark colors.
I enjoy using Black's, Grey's, Brown's, And *Gasp* Purple!?!?!
How does one make a purple character realistic?
Well, this is a pretty nice trick I found.
You need to have a basic understanding on how to blend colors, so lets get to it.
Okay, so, How can anybody make a purple color a realistic color, meant for realistic packs?
Well here's how. We're not using Purple, but we are.
We aren't using bright, neon purples...
But dark, realistic purples.
Neon Purple:

Realistic Purple:

You can even do it for blues and Reds.
Well, heres how to make it realistic:
Try and keep RBG colors close together, not far apart.
Far Apart:
180
55
180 (A bright Neon-like purple)
Close Together:
30
25
30
(The settings I used for the pelt in the "Realistic purple" color.)
Making them farther apart will get you a neon color. keeping them close together can get you a grey-ish kind of color.
For Red, I'd do something like:
35
30
30
For Green (I don't use green) I'd do something like
25
23
23
Etc.
Keeping the colors close together seriously helps when making a realistic, yet colorful "make it your own!!" Kind of character.
Here's a character I created for a realistic pack!
