Title: Height Maps
Post by: Lightning597 on April 26, 2019, 04:59:06 am
So, its been a long time since I've played around with map making in FH. I'm using GIMP to make this height map, and to my knowledge I'm doing everything correctly? I've double checked it multiple times. When I do something wrong, it crashes and closes right away (as it should) but after making sure I did everything right, I try to load up the height map and FH doesn't crash, just completely freezes.

Maybe I need to try waiting longer for it to load? Idk, I've tried waiting quite a while and nothing. My laptop is brand new and has certainly done much heftier loading jobs than this, in much quicker time.

Anyone know what could be happening? Help would be appreciated! c:

Hey, floof! Take a lookie at this checklist just to make sure everything is up to par! FH can be very finicky with heighmaps sometimes ;3

- 513 x 513
-Grayscale Mode (Can't just be grayscale, has to actually be in grayscale mode)
-No alpha channel
-One flattened layer
-You're saving as mapnameTerrain.png
-No spaces in the file name, spaces must be replaced with underscores _ (For example if your map is Pride Rock you save the terrain file as either PrideRockTerrain.png OR Pride_RockTerrain.png)

I once heard that there can't be any "255 255 255" white in heightmaps, but I'm not sure if it's true.

If nothing works for you, you can try using this pre-made heightmap and just pasting yours into it to see if that works:

It may also be a missing/incorrect temp.map file (which should be in feralheart > media > terrains):

Thanks for the responses everyone! Yeah, I've done everything on that checklist and yet it still freezes. Idk whats causing it D:

Out of curiosity, I downloaded a height map from online and it works just fine. Then I just erased it out and made mine (again) and its working so I guess I'll just have to do that whenever I make a height map.

Thanks for the recommendations! I think this issue is as solved as it can be.

Going to lock this thread as you stated that the issue was solved.

I was going to recommend pasting a new layer over the downloaded height map that works and flattening the image, then saving it but that's essentially what you did by erasing the contents and replacing. Glad you figured something out!
