Title: The community views on starting map (Home position/spawns point)
Post by: Redlinelies on March 13, 2012, 04:09:39 pm
So here's just a rather quick but general question brought upon the community.

In the past in FeralHeart and earlier games (IT), the spawn/home area have been one single shared map in which everyone goes to on default. The last few months FH has been using itself of a separate map in which you do not see any other players. This is mainly to reduce any potential lag for new arrivals.

It's certain that both ways have and up and downsides, but which one does the community prefer?

Yay for ze community.
I'd prefer a new start map, one where everyone could see each other.

I'm going for the community start map thing because it's nice for new players to meet and talk to other new players and make friends, but definitely NOT Bonfire. A larger map (more room, less lag) with more detail and little places to hang out... sort of like your Bonfire, Red. And maybe several places for the user to spawn from... that way lag would not center around one single spot and in a little circle like Bonfire used to.

OR, maybe have an option for users to choose whether to enter the game in a private map like Lonely Cave rather than the default, which would be a community map for new users.

I'm glad about the changes for the map only where you can see yourself. Theres plenty of other places to socialize in FH, and overall it will become easier if Lonely Cave was kept the same for the less risk on huge mass's of lag.
I'm on a notebook to play FH now, since I find portable the easier option, however, even if there is just a little bit of lag, I cannot even see my character properly. So if  made a new character, and started in the old default map (bonfire), my computer will shut down, and therefore I cannot play moi characters.
I find it better to access the maps too, especially the Ascention Island portal, I couldn't get up there if there was lag.

Community map! When I joined IT it was nice to have people around to ask questions and get a feel for what they were like. Lonely cave is... well.. too lonely for meh xD

I will quote this

Quote

Which would be a great solution if it would be made. But for now it would be one way or another. I decide to not post a long rant yet and watch what others might post.

Just a note to Zarque, if a new potential map was made, this map would not work exactly the same way as old bonfire.

Zarque

My new nickname! 8D Its beautiful, so bright and vivid.

Yes, I understand that clearly Red. I was pointing out that the old Bonfire was a blow (not as orginized as it could of been), and nothing towards the idea of a new map to be taken place. Sorreh if that not exactly clear, it is around 30 minutes past midnight here. Cx
Also, I'm not the social type, I prefer to not crowd my friends list with people who have helped me once or twice.

Now that I'm informed, -pokes red-, community maps would be fine. Kinda like Ringo said, I could see the poor newbies running about, not knowing where to go. Or not knowing how to move. So that would be an advantage.

An option like Wolff said would be soo great. I wouldn't make the new spawning place too small, though, hopefully it'd lessen lag. It'd lessen user density, too.

Can everyone just start in a large swimming pool where they will drown ( be banned forever) unless everyone helps everyone solve the mystery of the Feral Heart within 30 seconds?

Still not keen on the community map idea.
If it was to be new and larger (the new default map), everyone would prefer to stay there and possibly roleplay, instead of spreading the lag out in somewhere like Fluorite. I don't think the staff would like to move everyone into Ficho again. cx

Get a savannah map in the future and poof, lion rps would be gone.

Get a new snow map that has some actual content and poof, wolf rps would be gone.

And half of the rps would never take place there? *tries to think further up ze road*

Poofz? I like deh sound of dat.

Made a recent trip to Bonfire when I couldn't get to sleep, flooded with roleplays.
South Pole: Never used.
We don't exactlly have a Savannah map. The majority of people on FH can't download maps, which is a concern.

New map? New attraction for a while.

Question is maybe, why would new players move into another map if they don't offer anything particular than the first one. Savannah map could always be made, and south pole is used more than I thought a few bumps could ever be.

New maps with time spent into them = Permanent extension?

I myself prefer the Lonely Cave. Mostly for the above mentioned reasons of the lack of lag. Though I see where everyone is coming from about the new players coming in and needing help.

Though, in my opinion, if they browse the site even a little, the problem of them getting stuck on how to move and jumping through portals wouldn't be that big of a deal. Through the manual.

I agree with Red though, more maps would spread out user population if they had something to offer.

I'd personally like a start map where all of the new players could see each other.

i like the alone map, it really helps those of us with slow loading computers who would usually have a tough time loading just a new character for us but on top of that has to load the rest of the characters? also its just so loud with all the running about on a public home @[email protected]

though what would be nice is if in the alone home we had somthing like the home tab in the bio page were we can set a spot as our home but instead have it as a fave map so a portal to the area will apear in your defualt home so that you can get new characters straight to say a custom rp map or whatever so you dont leave everyone waiting for you to get back the long way. idk i just feel it'd add a bit more of a personal feel to the lone cave? especially for those who just sorta wander about and listen to what people are talking about.

though wolff's idea of being able to pick before hand of were to go is a nice touch.

Maybe there could be like 2-4 starting maps, linked together by portals, and you pop up in a random map? That would split the lag into halves, thirds or fourths, wouldn't it?  :)

If the start map was as large as the original IT's default, I would be more than happy to have a shared map, especially if it was laid out with the original idea, revelevant portals nears the border as well, and a few nice little landscapes (ex; the conifer tree clump by Castle's portal, I think). But it would have to be a large map, as I said, the size of IT's default at least, maybe a tad bigger, but again, not the size of ReallyBig or something like that >D

I think both options are good. When you start out alone, it gives you the chance to test out options without people insulting you by calling you a noob. You can type, test animations and so on without worrying someone is watching you. That way you can enter the world knowing the basis of the controls. ^^ It also can encourage exploration. I know it did for me!

But a community map entrance would be really nice too. Because then you can talk with other members right off the bat and ask any questions you may have. A nice way to start to make new friends in game. :3

I prefer that we have a map where no one else can see you. Sure it's nice to be able to meet up and all, but the lag somewhat defeats that purpose for some people. Also, it can be a bit weird because some people will pester and wonder why you don't reply while you type up your bio, assuming you type it up as soon as you spawn like I do...

Actually, forget it, lets just do what Sameth suggested. That wouldn't be silly at all, amIright? :P

I personally prefer the Lonely Cave method where you cannot see anyone. Honestly I think its one of the best things anyone could have done for the game. So what if you're a new user? There are three ways out that are obvious to you (Or will be when you run up to them) to get you into other maps to socialize. (As well as one above, to acension Island that I admit is more dificult to see and my friends have missed it in the past.) I believe it allows for you spawn in with little to no lag, and encourages newbies to explore instead of cramming into the same space like sardines in ADDITION to the players who arent new who like that particular map (Like with Bonfire overcrowding).

And despite the fact that, even if you threw out the Lonely Cave idea and when with a map where everyone spawns in and you made it larger to alleiviate lag, I still dont think it will do any good. Think about Flourite Plains. A new user has to travel through a couple of maps to reach it, and it is large in size. However, it often "steals" characters (Refuses to load them due to lag) and wont release them no matter how many times you try to get it to load them, even if you turn reflection/your other high settings off. I have a well rounded computer, and fast internet, so Im not on some old junk computer tryingto load the game, and I also know others who have a similar issue. So creating a map where we all can see each other, as a spawn map, is just going to recreate the same problem that Flourite Plains has, tenfold.

I realize you said that the system would not work exactly the same as the old Bonfire, but without a plan or explanation of such, my opinion remains to be the above. No community maps. If someone wants to socialize, its not going to kill someone to hit a "W" "A" "D" or "S" until they run into a portal, and find people. A person can learn at least that much about the controls, by themselves, without help, and thats enough to run them into a portal (accidentall or on purpose) to find someone else to fill them in.

If some things have already been said, or I missed something, my apologies.

I say a new Community map, with many spawning areas like wolffie said. Maybe all maps should have different spawning areas, definetly <--Spelt wrong) Fluorite Plains, So laggy you can't even get in! The igger the community map the better, so people aren't squished into mudpies and kill each other for space. I agree entirely with what Wollfox said and Sameth xD

I prefer the Lonely Cave approach. When I first joined Bonfire was the spawn point/whatever you want to call it. Being bombared with sparkledogs and illiterates wasn't fun. If the lag would even let the chat box update itself.

Not trying to offend anyone who hangs out at Bonfire, it just isn't my favourite place.
