Maybe you should export it as a .png file. To get a .png, .jpg, etc. into Gimp, you will have to import it. Gimp only saves and takes a .xcf file.

Thanks for the tip, I've done this method before using maps, but I didn't think to try that with artwork, and thanks for the compliment, it means tons :)
