Now I'm not sure how FireAlpaca works, but in programs such as GIMP, you need to physically enable the image as a 'grayscale' image. Otherwise, regardless if you are only using tones of gray, the map wouldn't work. Maybe there's a similar setting for FireAlpaca?

Even if all the colors are black and white, I've found it that you MUST have the canvas file be completely grey scale. I don't know how FireAlpaca works, but I know that in GIMP, when starting a new project, you can choose to either make a RGB project, where you can have all the color you want, or a grey scale, where even if you select a color to creat with, it will come out grey. If you make it in a RGB format, even if all the colors are indeed in full black and white, it will not load into the game, I've noticed. It must be created on a grey scale project- so that even if you pick a color to color with, it will just come out grey.

Edit- You posted right before I posted - 3- XD

As far as I know, FireAlpaca doesn't have an option to convert to greyscale (at least not that I know of?). I make most of my heightmaps in FireAlpaca as well, but you need to open them up in a different program such as Photoshop or GIMP afterwards and convert it to greyscale there by changing the mode from RGB to Greyscale (for both Photoshop and GIMP, you can do this by going to Image > Mode > Greyscale).

As said before, make sure you are opening the file in GIMP or Photoshop and converting it from RGB to Grayscale. You may also want to try flattening the image before exporting it, and making sure the file is a png. Another thing you can try is placing it one folder further, into FH>media>terrains>default.

Another tip: Make sure there is no transparency/Alpha attached to the layers. It appears as a dark and light grey checkerboard when erased! ^^
