Title: Issues With Censorship
Post by: Calvary on May 06, 2020, 07:21:36 pm
I don't normally post on the forums anymore, but after a few instances where certain things have been censored on the forums directly, I simply want to know why these censorships are being put in place and what others think or feel about this.

I am usually one for censoring harmful words or explicit content, but the things being censored recently on this forum in my opinion is a bit, well, far-fetched. Such as the mention of 'October' which is all I'll need to say to avoid the censorship aspect of it. This was followed up with the censorship of Discord as an entire platform, which is something I still disagree with as a whole.

The last thing I've come to notice is xSpirit's Ko-Fi link for support being censored on the site. For what reason, I am unaware, but to be quite frank it just seems a bit 'much' to put it in a nicer tone. To me, the idea of censorship on this forum has gone off the deep end, and I do not mean this in a good way. Censorship has always had a poor connotation to it, but it's what you do with it and how you apply it that makes it in poor taste, and I don't mean to step on anyone's toes, but it's a bit disrespectful and where I tend to draw the line to not only censor out Discord as a platform where a majority of this userbase goes, but also to censor out someone's means of receiving direct support for their work.

I personally believe these restrictions should be lifted, because to be quite frank, this is getting out of hand way too quickly for a game that is dwindling in numbers.

Will agree it's getting ridiculous. Seems like we can't even have our own free minds.

As well as the link to the FHU site being censored. Just an observation.

Agreed. There are a lot of things being censored that really don't need to be.

Also, does anyone know why Dark_heart's post was removed?

I do have to agree, this isn't the first time one of these discussions have come up- I remember weeks ago we had the same issue with a Discord thread and our concerns about the word being completely censored which also kinda vanished.

Like I understand in some part that FH needs to maintain some image considering its status and circumstances, but we've gone to a point where it's getting straight-up malicious and unfair and it certainly reflects poorly on others.

In all honesty, I never even noticed any of this. I'm sorry that's happening to you all, though.

Thank you all for your input.

I am hoping that in this regard, Staff may decide to uplift the censor they put in place. In hopes that you folks, as staff, are reading this, I implore you to reconsider your censorship because the censors you have implemented do not regard the rules you have put in place on the forums.

I deleted my post myself.

However, I think censorship in general is not a bad thing, of course. Is needed. But censoring the word "Discord" is a slight exaggeration. I would understand if PM groups could be set up in the forum, but since the roleplay group doesn't have that function, they have to communicate somehow.

So I am also coming to some idea here - private chat groups in the forum. Then you would not need to use Discord, and censorship would be more understandable.

Censorship is a pretty slippery slope.. the increasing amount of things becoming censored on the forum seems very... surprising and out of character for this game. Honestly just learning that T*nypic (sorry idk if the word is auto censored or not skdfjdfk) was a banned website for the first time was pretty weird to me lol but at least that one's understandable and has positive intent behind it!

However, the recent trend of petty censorship is pretty concerning imo, it's not like banning some swear words from a kids game, it feels very targeted towards some or made specifically to silence topics that might be unsavory but DO deserve civil discussion. I'm not too active around here so admittedly I'm not to date on everything happening, take my opinion with a grain of salt, whatever but what I've observed so far and heard about in this thread seems like a massive issue. If the trend continues it's only going to get more concerning.

Never noticed. Sorry that it's happening though, it's really strange how those words are blocked :o

If you have a question why the xSpirit links were censored that’s because Razmirz censored them days ago. Since this is his site and his server he will do whatever he wants with it as it is within his right to. Users of this website (you, staff etc) agreed to his terms and conditions. Raz reserves the right to make whatever changes he sees fit. If users don’t like these changes they’re free to respectfully voice their opinion but that doesn’t mean he’s going to listen or change things. If users continue to find their experience some how hampered or tarnished by these word changes they’re free to stop using the service.

Staff don’t control Raz.

Next:

The 2018 No moderator oct. phrase, “censoring” was done by myself as a cheesy but honest playful attempt to mitigate the topic every time it was brought up. Raz and the staff involved with that sorted that out ages ago, apologies were made, and things moved on. A small handful of folks in the community with an itch for stirring drama over old irrelevant topics kept bringing up the phrase however. Even though that horse was dead these select few folks would beat it back up into every and any possible conversation to use it as a point of blame for everything & anything wrong with FH (Especially the dots.) Rather than civil discussion or respectful reference, the phrase was used as an underhanded tool to start needless drama again. Often on threads supposedly claiming how “drama” was killing FH you’d see this, and it would contradict everything.

So hey I decided to throw in a little innocent “joke” and swap out the phrase with something as random but also self reflective as the death of Harambe. I try to use my light hearted humor as a way to remind people to get a grip and stop going ape and getting at each others throats over a game. Because it’s so stupid and senseless already. I’d rather people step back and laugh even if it’s a stupid cheesy thing.

But hey “censorship” = Communism = FH staff? Idk. There will always be some who will find a way to make something out of nothing so it’s up to every individual what they make of it. Just don’t jump into mob mentality before thinking about it. Stupid? Unprofessional? Old meme? Yeah maybe. But it’s also not big mean censoring. There’s worse things in the world I guess.

Next:

The Tiny pic links were disabled long ago because the website would recycle image links and swap out the images. Red flags came up to the staff when some innappropriate images appeared on official threads and popular threads like user made tutorials etc. Since we can’t control what is coming up with tiny pic and it’s image hosting we had to remove it. Was it inconvenient? Yeah a bit but it’s better safe than sorry?

Next:

Discord. The word discord itself is NOT censored. The links to Discord are however censored and the main reason for doing so is for user safety. If the word Discord itself gets censored that is automatically done by the site due to the triggers set to ban the Discord site links.

I gave an explanation on the last news letter and tried to politely explain that some very heinous individuals were using Discord through our site as a platform to lure users off our site/game’s moderation into unlawful/disturbing activities.

If you’d look at the issue through this lenses you’d see why this wasn’t a tough decision for FH staff to make since we value our community’s safety first. This wasn’t a punishment, as I said before it’s unfortunate to those who use the platform appropriately for FH. Ideally FH staff would have liked to integrate a system that brings the convenience and likable type of features Discord offers to FH. This would allow us to safely moderate and protect the community while offering them the tools they enjoy in a safer environment. This would also have solved some of the other issues Discord has presented.

Trust me when I say we looked at so many ways to work with it but ultimately this was the safest, most effective, and manageable choice. We can not possibly constantly check up on every Discord and all its channels daily just to make sure users aren’t up to or getting strung into nefarious activities.

You can still use your Discords. We simply ask that you don’t link them on the FH site. Thank you kindly.

But yeah there’s nothing much else to say that hasn’t been said. Thanks for voicing your concerns. I hope this eases your mind. Don’t worry we’re not going to pull a CCP on FH. It would never get that far.

Unless Raz wants to?
