Title: 6 color masks simplified.
Post by: Jitters on October 27, 2011, 05:39:34 pm
Okay, I decided that my previous tutorial for 6 colored masks, while extremely effective following my terrain tutorial, is completely useless on other programs and for people who don't work with layers. Also, some of you already have your terrain done the way you like to make them, which means they are one layer. This tutorial, while not as pretty as my other one, is for you.

I am making this assuming you already know how to do a simple 3 color mask.

Step 1: Load up your terrain. You'll want this for a reference. Put it in RGB mode.

Step 2: Begin making your mask using Red, Green, Blue, and three other colors. Save as a .PNG called "mapnameMaskWIP"

Step 3: Fill in all the colors except for Red, Green and Blue with black. Save as a .PNG called "MapnameMask"

Step 4: Reload "MapnameMaskWIP.png". This time fill in Red, Green, and Blue with black. Change the other three colors into Red Green and Blue. Save it as a .PNG named "Mapnamemask2"

Step 5: Run the mapmaker. Enter the terrain and "mapnamemask.png". Keep pressing the right arrow where the terrain textures are until the mask option becomes blank. Enter " MapnameMask2.png" here.

Congrats! You should be able to use 6 terrain masks with no problem :)

Yes, you can, as long as they don't overlap. In my video Map making tutorial I show how to accomplish blended ones without too much issue.

They should put something similar to this on the documentation, this is really to the point.

For some reason on the second three, it made the textures layer over each other. Ex; For color/texture #4, you choose the ocean sand texture. However, it textures #4, 5, and 6. You pick the flower grass for #5, and it goes over sand, but only on 5 and 6, and translucently, so you can see through. You pick the lava ground for #6, and it goes on top of the sand and flower grass, also translucent.  Any reason why this is, or how to stop it?

PM you the mask, or screenshots of what I`m talking about? And yes, I followed them as far as I understood, but I may have messed up on something.

Thank you very much for this!
Also, did I do something wrong? I followed each step, but for some reason, every terrain is coming out, VERY, bright. Like, white bright, not green bright or whatever. ><

I believe it is because of overlapping color masks...but that has yet to be confirmed, I still get it as well.

I'm sorry, I am unsure as to why this is like that either...

This didn't work at all. Only two of the colors worked and the edges are all pixelly. :\

It looks easy, but I've been struggling with it for a couple of weeks. I just can't seem to understand how to do it. Do you think there's anyone who would give a private session or tutorial on it? I can pay in dA points if need be.
