Title: Fluorite Plains in the Unreal 3 Engine
Post by: Anathema on November 24, 2013, 07:04:34 am
This is a project that I and Harkane have been working on for quite some time; recently, we've had a hiatus for a few months, and it seems like neither of us have any real desire to continue. Still, I'm happy with the work that's been done thus far despite some obvious errors with texturing, shadowing, and the map being incorrectly scaled. Over the course of our progress on this, I've taken a few screenshots; as they're doing nought but sitting around on my hard-drive, I might as well post them here.

Pictures around the N/Z:

Island to the Cape of Lost Worlds:

Stone Bridge:

That's about everything! Before you ask, no, I am not trying to recreate FeralHeart, nor do I have any desire to do so; think of this as more of an 'experiment' with the UDK. That aside, I hope you enjoyed looking. ^^

Wow, thank you all for your feedback! ^^ I didn't expect such an overwhelming positive response, though I'm really glad you all like it. xP

Now to answer a few questions: Vipen, since this is not made with FeralHeart, or in any way remotely connected to the game, it'll never be downloadable for use with the game, if that's what you were implying. ^^ If you were asking if it'll ever be downloadable period, then that's a different question which ties into what Galiou said, and my answer would be:

I currently don't have any plans of making this into a fully-fledged game for people to download and play; alas, I don't possess the technical know-how, time, or patience to do such a thing, and even if I did, I wouldn't want to recreate FeralHeart as it's not my game and might be considered plagiarism. Despite that, that doesn't mean I'm stopping all production on this.

As time passes I'll continue to work on things, making bits of progress along the way; as I make progress, I'll most likely update this thread with what I've done and post new screenshots, maybe even videos of what I've done. While this is a pretty decent recreation of Fluorite Plains, it's still largely unfinished and there's a lot I'd like to accomplish; it's good as it is, but it could be better. There's things I'd like to implement such as: 3d or reflective water; a dynamic day/night cycle; better texturing; and even changing up bits of the map so it comes off as more realistic.

Some of those things I'm not sure I'm capable of, and I'm not even certain the UDK would be streamlined enough for me to easily accomplish those goals without me having to dig around in the code (and I fail at code). But regardless of what happens, I'll be sure to keep you all posted on how things develop. ^^ Stay tuned!

The program we use is UDK (Unreal Developer's Kit), and it can be used to make not just maps, but entire games. ^^ I certainly don't see FeralHeart ever having an update again, however - let alone an update that would make the game look anything like this.

Also, thanks for all the support, everyone! :D

I am aware this is a bit of an old topic, but I have a question. Where did you get the terrain mask for Fluorite? I've looked practically everywhere through the files except for the main .exe file (and most other actual files), and I've found nothing. I'm assuming it's packed in with fhFluoritePlains.fhm?

Indeed it is packed in there. The game encrypts these files so members can't steal your terrain or mask after they download the map. Are you looking to making a map with it? You can always make your own terrain/mask in gimp or photoshop, feel free to browse the Mapping Tutorials section for more info on that dear.

Anywho, have a flooftastic day! c:

Thank you all for your comments. ^^ In response to Peenut2k7, heightmaps are more or less provided for you in-game in the form of the minimap, which appears in the upper left of the screen. Just run your character or camera to a position where all of the heightmap is visible, press print screen, and then it'll be available in your FeralHeart's screenshots folder. All you have to do is select the area containing the heightmap and enlarge it to 513 x 513. Of course, since the minimap is so small, there will be some quality loss when resizing - but that detail can be painted back in afterwards.

In response to Jennifer, many thanks. ^^ I'm inclined to agree with you; it's a shame Kovu never implemented shadows or bloom into FeralHeart.
