Cannot load into maps
« on: December 15, 2018, 05:49:14 pm »
Okay so I have tried resolving this issue myself to avail, I'm not sure what is going on. It started after the latest update, I installed it and things ran smoothly for a while. Well recently FH has decided to stop working for me. I can login just fine and select my characters, but then I get the pop up telling me that "Feralheart.exe has stopped working." Now it doesn't always do this. When I reinstall the game it works for a little while, where I can get into a map and run around in it. But after many a day or so, it stops working.
A good example would be just this week. I created a new char and when I was trying to test him out a few days ago, it didn't work. So I reinstalled the game, everything worked fine. Jump to today, maybe two or three days later, and now I cannot get on.
I've reinstalled the game maybe three times now, checked for any "01" files like particles and stuff, I've deleted all my custom maps, and I have restated my computer a few times. I don't think it has anything to do with the markings or items packs I use, because I have always used those. I even used Red's tutorial to speed up my game like I have always done and that didn't work, even when I stopped using it nothing changed.
I've tried searching online to find a solution but I cannot seem to find anything that matches my exact problem or maybe I just haven't searched deep enough.
Any ideas?

  • Flipping through tabs can sometimes cause the game to randomly crash or when you have too many programs open at the same time while running FeralHeart.
  • Make sure there's no security software blocking the game.
    Quote from:
Open up your Control Panel, located in the Start menu. Depending on which Operating system you use and which layout, it might look differently. But Windows firewall should be in the category "security," or just find the text, "Windows firewall" or "Allow a program through windows firewall". This should take you to the correct place.

Once there you'll get a new window with a list of programs. Try to locate FeralHeart.exe in there and add it to exceptions by marking the checkbox. If you can't find it, and the game to the list by yourself by pressing "add program."
  • Try running the game as an administrator.
  • Make sure that you have DirectX installed: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35
  • Try changing your rendering subsystem.
The absolute first thing you want to try is to change the rendering mode for the game. There's different rendering modes you can pick from, usually OpenGL and Direct3D9. This decides which way your graphic card should process the game. This one is at standard set to OpenGL, so we'd want to set it to Direct3D9.

There are two ways you can change this setting.

    How to fix it!
Either you start the game, go into the Options menu (can be accessed by pressing the Escape key on your computer), click the Video tab, and then change the rendering subsystem and restart the game.

Sometimes you aren't able to even enter the game, and all you can hear is the menu music, or it just crashes directly after launch. Those who experience this can enter the Feralheart folder located in C:\FeralHeart at standard, find the file called "Ogre.cfg" and open it with Notepad.

This file works just as the ingame options menu, but instead of buttons and sliders, there's text.

What we're interested in is the top row

Set the top row text so it is just like in the picture with the text
    Quote from:
    Render System=Direct3D9 Rendering Subsystem

Save the file, and close it. Next time you run the game it should boot with the new settings you applied. You can also change your Rendering system by setting it to OpenGl instead of Direct3D9.

Have you tried to install a second FH folder with absolutly nothing else changed or modded and see if you still crash?

If you don't crash then from the very new and clean FH installation I would slowly be adding back your custom stuff to see what's causing the problem.

Sometimes even trying to get to the lonely cave I would get a crash over custom maps in the map maker and it's hard to find out.

I'm not sure which edition of DirectX I need but when I checked I have the 11th version of it. I tried the other methods without uninstalling and none of them worked. I then uninstalled and reinstalled with no new markings or items added, I also didn't replace my screenshots folder with the new one. Everything ran fine. I added the markings and items and so far so good. We shall see if it continues to work in the next few days lol
