Title: How did you come up with your characters name?
Post by: Reaper on November 01, 2016, 06:23:55 pm
Well I wanted I unique and uncommon name so for Baine I basically got his name from the name of a character from World of Warcraft. For Segador I wanted his name to be Reaper, but that name is too common so I decided to translate the word Reaper into Spanish so it came up as Segador. I thought it was a good name so I decided to keep it. My other character Amon well I just searched in Google names of Demon gods because he is like a demon. Then I came up with a Demon God called Amon.

How did you come up with your characters name?

I came up with the name VortexAlive by thinking about what I keep doing with everything, the Vortex part comes from me continuously switching what I'm doing in a sort of circular rotating pattern. The alive part comes from me being the only "Living" Vortex that also still manages to leave an empty gap of space every time I do something. xD

As for my other characters, I combined my imagination with words I had seen before and the end result was the names of each one.
TokKul for instance comes from the currency Tokkul in Runescape.

While everyone else was actually creative and awesome at coming up with their character names, I just went online and looked around for one and Azura just popped out at me. I also use that for my online name.

Type random letters and see if its easy to pronounce and sounds like a name.

I'll look at name generators and depending on the name, I'll switch some letters around to make a new name. In most of the names I have, I start out with using one of my favorite letters and sometimes just build my own name from there, idk. I like the names you have btw (Baine, Segador, and Amon)

Most of my character names are Latin and based of how they behave, ex. my characters Res (Truth) and Medax (Liar), some others are just random words like Red, my very unused character, or from generators, like my unused horse character Midas. There's one character I got a name from a dream for, modified the character a lot but kept the name (ShadowFang).

I often use the 20000+ Names website and pick names that (supposedly) originate from the region their species usually lives in. Like, I use African names for lions, Native American names for certain kinds of wolves, etc.

I think about what name is appropriate. For example, if they look like their name is Storm I'll name 'em Storm. Storm was my first OC. He was based on a plushie I had that had a blue collar and nametag that said 'Storm'.

I stole mine off a hamster. o3o Enoki sounded interesting, so I googled it to find out 'tis a Japanese mushroom. So... yeah, hope that hamster doesn't mind I named something after 'em.

I named my first char Aris, after main character from a Wattpad story. Another name, Chiva (my TLK OC) just somehow came on my mind. Lots of names are from Swahili. Some are named after the maps they are in (Africa, Rainforest), these I use only for taking screenshots. And now I often use words from Mando'a (Star Wars language) as for Iviin (wolf, name means "fast ") and Kebii (shortened from Kebii'tra which means "blue sky")

I can actually generate names spontaneously, and they're pretty spiffy. I've not have a hard time figuring out a name for my characters. But  here are my main FH character names and their origins:

Telluris: I named him after the Latin name for earth (Masculine).
Telly: Derived from Telluris.
Jorhaal: No idea, I was thinking up a name that was almost northern European. Although the Sanskrit word 'Jora' Seems to reflect some of her aspects quite well, it was never thought of.
Ferro: Named after Ferrum, Latin for Iron (Neutral). Altered it a little because I don't want to name her Ferra/Feara (a name taken by my friend's character).
Leknu: Originally Lignus, which is also another Latin word for timber (Masculine), altered it a little to be less obvious.
Iska/Iskandre: Probably from Iskandar, which is Alexander the Great's given name in Eastern countries. Slightly altered.
Aclediptus: Spontaneous, I wanted to think up of something Latin (like the rest of my characters) And this came to me.

Soot, who I suppose is my "main", is black and gray. Twig likes to carry a twig in her mouth. Ain't I creative? ... To be fair, Twig chose her own name storywise and she's hardly the most imaginative one around. I'm fond of simple and descriptive names.
Title: Re: How did you come up with your characters name?
Post by: Kynvuu on November 06, 2016, 02:27:04 pm
I'm not as creative when it comes to making up cool names, so my story of how I came up with Kynvuu is a little boring. xD But basically I had two characters I really liked, one named Kyn (Was going to go with Kin, as in kinship, but the Y just looked cooler xD) and the other Vuu (I thought it was a cool abbreviation for the name "Voodoo"). I really like these characters names but not so much their design. So basically I decided to smush the two names together and create one character with a combination of their designs + backstory and I guess that's where Kynvuu came from.

I randomly create mine. But mostly, I find a way for the name to fit. But honestly, I just think of a random name and make the character.

mostly I go to behindthename.com to get my names

Kiki: Wanted my fursona to have a "nickname" version of my username lol (plus, it is a cute name)
Zalikah: It was a name of one of my horses on Howrse
Grape: Liked the sound of it, plus it's rarely used
Jhotarubi: Saw someone on WolfQuest with this name, I like it and just changed the spelling a bit
Ravioli: Because raviolis are greattttt
Summitwish: I like the sound of the words "summit" and "wishes" so I just slapped them together
Vorrati: I remember hearing about a show called "Legend of Korra" (or something like that). I liked the name "Korra", but I thought it sounded cooler with a "V", so then it became "Vorra". At that point I thought the name was too short so I just added a "ti" at the end to make "Vorrati"

i generally either take them from spur-of-the-moment thoughts in my head which sound regal or funny or flighty. i always think of my character's personality before making a name for it gives people a general view of my character's personality without poking in their bio.

for example, if a character is down to earth and a family lover i'll name him/her bruno (i tend to go with gender neutral names)
but, if the character is regal and defined i shall name him/her valdeen/valdeena
however, if the character has a roughened but strong-headed personality i shall name them rasputin.

if i cannot think of one out of my head, i will think about their personality and a word that goes with it. i shall then look it up in a different language; and believe me, there is almost always a name that fits them in one of the languages.

For my RP character names, I usually use fantasynamegenerators.com because I'm totally original. B')

For my fursona, though, Hooli was named because of my username, hooligans.. so again, totally original. : D

I'm not sure if many other people do this, but honestly I like to find really interesting and pretty words that sound good on the tongue such as:
Verdict, Apracity, Diesel, Mercy, Repo, Prevulsion etc

Some of them are real words, some aren't. Some characters can be totally unrelated to their word-name thing, but hey - it's pretty LOL. As long as it doesn't mean something offensive in another language SNORts

Usually I have all of my characters named after certain elements or celestial bodies (i.e. Cobalt, Lunar, and Stratus) If I cant come up with any I just go for the generic names like my characters Ace and Dakota

If I don't use a baby-names website (usually Behindthenames) and find something Nordic/Russian, I've either come up with a random name from a random word (like Keeto from Ketose or Remlin from... well I just thought of that one actually) or found a name I really like from some random source (I like the name Fyodor, as in Fyodor Dostoevsky; Lance, as in the guy from Voltron; Rueben, as in the guy from the bible).

I don't have much of a habit.

My main char, Teva, is literally the name of sandal. Teva is a brand of outdoorsy, hiking sandal, but it's pretty name so whatevs.
As for Puck, I'm a huge hockey fan, so Puck seemed fitting. xD

If a name pops into my head at any time of the day, then I'll look it up on the web to ensure I am not about to name my character a rude word.

If I'm too out of names, then I use a name generator before plugging the name I find into a search engine.

My main character, Gui, was named differently. I was thinking of tech/game-related names when Graphical User Interface came to mind, I liked how the name fit my mech and it was a short name too. Gui's name is an acronym.
I put the "F" there since many times have I seen others getting chars' genders wrong, and the "MechCat" is there since my mech was sometimes mistaken for a lion.

Oo, interesting topic here c:
For some of my main characters... The name would usually pop into my head. One in particular being Pandeer.
What basically happened was that I was editing a chibi version of a panda character that I had and while going through the items, I accidentally clicked the buck antlers and boom, the creation of this brown floof was born. As for the naming part, since it reminded me of a buck / deer as well as it being a Panda, I wanted to combine the two together somehow and 'Click' the name Pandeer was born.
Lol. And this was all by accident also so I guess when it comes to me naming my character, it kinda just flows out once I create them c:

Love this topic! It's always interesting to see how people come up with things like this. For me I either browse this handy website (http://www.20000-names.com/), or have an interesting name pop into my head and stick it to a character. Usually I use 2000 names for roleplays or one-off characters, however, for my mains I'd much rather come up with a more unique or uncommon name that comes to my mind naturally. It just feels more genuine for my "mascot characters" rather than picking a name from a database.

I also take personality and character design into consideration. For instance, Scuttle is a shifty and intelligent but scatterbrained young street cat, Pip is the tiny shape of a friend, Mako is a type of shark which would fit my gnoll ranger nicely, etc.

aw jeez this is my first post on here. welp, too late now :p

Since I'm starting to play the game again (yay) I only have two characters, so this'll be pretty short.

Thaed: Anagram for death (pretty much just backwards with the 't' and 'h' switched around). His preset features his head as a skull and... well, why not? He doesn't really look grim or whatever but I liked the sound of it and it's spelled quite nicely so I went ahead and used it. It kinda stuck after that.

Rosky: One of my irl friends was spamming me earlier as I was away from my phone and they typed this, so I decided to use it as my second character's name. I was originally planning to use Lubec(a) because I saw it in my history book and thought it sounded nice, but I'll probably just use it for another character.

Last names are the hard part, however. I usually use behindthename or fantasynamegenerators for that.

I must admit that I'm planning to name a character Milk because milk is just... so darn good. So if you see a character named Milk sometime in the next 1-2 weeks, it's me. c;

For my characters I'll design them first and then give them a name on how they look, act, or where they came from.
E.G. my character Faxxer Mediatrix, they are a cybernetic fox, and I thought,"A Fax machine kinda sounds like fox, so why not?" and I got Mediatrix from a popular fax machine.
Nobody would get it unless I told them but I thought it was funny.
Otherwise I just think of a name I think fits.

Let's see I have Xaan, Dakota, Bodulfr, Ayashi, Vrondi, Tanari, Julia, Bruton, Sarah, Leon, Dakota, Tazkar and Nilak.

I got the name Xaan from tan animation in Youtube called "Deliver Us from evil", and no my character has no connection from the characters there. Although xaan (youtube) pelt inspired me to create a character with a red pelt color.

Dakota got it from Balto source characters there, there are a lot of characters there named 'Dakota'.

Bodulfr - means 'War wolf' in german (I think) got this name from Serena Valentino's book: How to be a werewolf
Ayashi - Idk what language but the word means 'ice' if I'm not mistaken
Vrondi - 'lightning' forgot what language
Tanari - the name 'Tanari' was inspired from  the wolf in Prince of the Pack season 1, a youtube animation, he was killed by Andru. Tanari's markings and attitude in the series inspires me to create a wolf that somewhat has the same personality and markings as him.
Julia - this is actually my preferred nickname. My first name is 'Julianne Marie' but people call me 'Jam' (Julie, Ann, and  Marie = name of 3 saints). I don't like my nickname so Julia is my preferred nickname. Anyways this character is my fursona.
Bruton - This character is brutal (on the outside), he's somewhat of a brute because he doesn't want to show his sensitive side. So with that personality, I want to think of a name that will really make him sound like a brute. And I think this name is also name of an Iguanodon from Disney's "Dinosaurs"
Sarah - common? Yep but I want something that a little bit sound or has the little resemblance to the word Savannah, yes I know no such resemblance. (Can;t think of a name but Sarah sounds like a gentle kind and soft lioness.
Leon - Well since he's a lion...
Tazkar - He's brother's name is Azkar, I think there's a character in DOTA name 'Tuskarr' but nope Tazkar's not a warthog or an elephant, he's a lion.
Nilak - Sounds like Alaskan or like an Eskimo name... I think it's a common in those regions that I mentioned since this wolf was born in Alaskan wilderness.

There ya go, I got names mostly from their personality and Birthplace and the jumble of words and also from other media.

I go onto a website by snowwowl (-I think) with a HUGE list with native american names and meanings. I pick the most suitable one- here are examples of some of my characters. Aponi - Butterfly (or chasing butterflies) and I can remember Ahiga - Stanf for 'he fights'. Ther is also an option to choose female and male names to help refining the choice easier.

I did not really come up with my name on my own, the name Shadow was one of my childhood nicknames that my close friends would call me and I actually did not mind because I always liked the name Shadow, it just sounded cool to me so I did not mind people calling me it. After sometime of being online I started to just use it as my user name and thus my character name was born.

Luesha- I thought it was a nice exotic name for a vernid.
Sylvia- This song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRtnWOsRV80)
Demise- It's a dark sounding name and the character is literally all black. She's also a bringer of bad luck.
Rosemary Storm- I didn't do my research so I thought rosemary was a red plant related to a rose, so I named him after the "color" of his fur. I now know rosemary isn't anything like a rose but the name stuck. :p
I have a lot of characters with "storm" in their name, actually.
