Title: Loading Textures?

Ok, so I know how to make textures and all, But I don't get how to get them working. Waht I mean is I don't know how to put them on a mesh.

Example:
I open and edit a texture, to make it look what I want it to look like for a different mesh, then, save it but use another name. When I try to load it using that name, It won't work.

Can someone please help me?
