Title: layer color on gimp, needing help asap!

Okay so I downloaded gimp on my dads computer since i cant make a map on my own becuase FH doesnt work on my own computer, well I cant seem to figure out how to change the color of my layer?? Everytime i try it turns dark grey instead of red!! In the instructions it says to change it to red so i can make a terrian... um yeah so if anyone could help me with this quick problem i would like that alot!!

I do believe you have it set to greyscale.
Switch to RGB color and it should work!
