Title: an idea on how to get less lag?
Post by: isone on March 27, 2012, 05:59:14 pm
ok after logging in select which server you want having 4 different servers so that you can choose which server you want to get less lag?

This would make it very hard for Moderators and Admins to watch the maps and different servers, but one other server would be nice, yet it would cost alot of money.

something HAS and i mean HAS to be done because I can't stand the 1 frame per second in the maps that's just WAY TOO LOW i could get away with 15FPS but NOT 1! that's ridiculous!! at least optimise so things that aren't shown on your screen dont show up at all! SERIOUSLY! something HAS to be done about this! (absolutely no lag in lonely cave since no one else is there) lonely cave is the only place that doesnt lag for me as well as skys rim

Yes, I know it's annoying, but turn off water reflections and turn your view distance down, that reduces lag by alot! But the Admins and Moderators are very busy at the moment, even if there is lag!

Problem.. changing view distance does absolutely nothing. this is the same for every PC I have including my laptop. I set it to 0 and even 0.01 and 0.1 and nothing changes no difference at all and water reflections doesnt affect my performance at all

You have no right to demand a new server. Which you obviously did by using exclamation marks and caps. -.-
Server costs money, a lot of money..
If you don't like the lag, go to some deserted corner of the map you're in, or even to a private map. :/
I doubt that FH will be getting any new servers.

Changing view distance DOES affect the game. Changing the view distance gets rid of objects that are far away from you, The lower the view distance the closer the objects will disappear from you. Don't assume that because you can not see the difference that there IS no difference.

I can see where you are coming from with the idea itself, and I can understand the frustration.

Even though FH does not have breaking visuals for a game it's still very demanding as soon as a few characters are in the same spot or a map is overloaded with meshes. This isn't exactly a sims game from from the early 2000s.

Keep in mind, that even though getting a server might sounds like a good idea if FH keep growing and got a very big community, the game would pretty much stay the same. The lag you seem to be so annoyed about is most likely the framerate that is controlled by how powerful your computer is, and how demanding the game might be. Even if you buy a new laptop today you still bump into lag at times if in a crowded area, but it's also a matter of which in game settings you have or possibly even running other programs at the same time.

This is by NO means any boasting, but I myself sit on a desktop computer that were built after the release of FH with the money of 2000 Euros, just because I want the sharpest quality and nothing reduced, I still bump into awful frame drops in crowded maps. A suggestion would be to read this quick post explaining the ingame settings.

If turning everything down in the game to a lower quality you will get a performance boost, but if you run an older computer this might not increase that much.

In general, the servers might have a tiny claw in the situation, but far from what your computer(s) has to do with running the actual game. A server that runs FH is far from cheap and isn't exactly a "Want, just get" situation if that's understandable.

I can play crisis on the lowest setting with over 20FPS easily playable but sometimes Feral-Heart gets less than 5FPS on the lowest setting

I don't have a lot of lag problems despite my terrible connection.  ;D

Even on slow computers, here is something that can speed up FH (or any program, for that matter)

Press Alt+Ctrl+Del, and open the task manager.

Click on the "Processes" tab.

Find the FH process, it will be called FeralHeart.

Right Click on it, and go to Set Priority.

Here, you can choose the priority. Set it on High.

Done!

Some general stuff and a few more tips:
Changing the priority of a process changes the amount od memory your computer dedicates to that task. It works great for speeding up games, browsers, or any program. Set at high priority, even if you have 20 programs running very laggily and slow in the background, FeralHeart will run smoother than everything else. But to maximise the performance, close other programs. (Go into the process tabs in Task Manager again, and look through at the tasks there. A lot of them will be useless, such as Google updaters, and Itunes helpers, little things that continually run in the background and slow down your system. You can end these processes in the task manager. But be careful not to end any processes that you don't know what they are, becuase this could end a vital system process)

Two more things:
~Don't set the priority to Real Time, as this can be dangerous for your system. Basically you are injecting steroids into that process, and your compuer may crash.
~Don't do this if you have a very old computer, as this may make it expend too much RAM. But you can run Crysis, so you will be sweet :)

This WILL NOT completely fix the lag, it is an inevitable part of having 800+ players on one server. But this should help general performance. :)

Hope I helped, and that FH runs better for you.

My computer freezes and completely locks up as soon as I select high priority and I have to unplug and plug my computer back in and turn it on again to unfreeze it :(

If that is the case, then I would consider getting more RAM. If it can't handle one process on high priority, then either you have way too many programs running or you have far too little RAM. My old laptop that I sometimes use has 2GB of RAM, ATI Radeon 3200 graphics card with 256mb of memory (same as you, I believe) and a 2.1Ghz dual core processor. That laptop can handle FH and other programs such as Skyrim and Photoshop set on High Priority.

And, I saw on another thread that you run Windows 8. I would strongly reccomend getting another OS, W8 is only in it's beta stages, and, as well as being designed for both tablets and computers, will no doubt be filled with bugs.

uhh I have 3GB RAM that should be plenty right?

That should be more than enough.
I don't know, all I can think of is problems with Windows 8, as it is unsupported and only in it's Beta version.
