Hi, I am a great map-maker, but every-so often a map crashes my game. I don't usually mind this and usully scrap the map asap. but, lately, if a map crashes my game... I have to redownload FH entirely!
it all started when I tried to make a detailed map of Yellowstone National Park, I got a satalite image and made a basic, but very detailed copy of the area, mountains, rivers, lakes ect... then FH crashed. thinking it was FH's way of saying "hey too much detail here- ain't workin'!" I made my map simpler. Still didn't work. so, to determine if it was the map or the game, I hade a 'test' map- a simpe map with a middle grey, a white circle and a black circle- FH crashed. Giving up, I backed up my data and scooched that over and deleted the Whole FH folder and re-downloaded it and put my stuff back in. I remade my map- detail and all thinking "hey, it's over- FH has had it tantrum, I can go back to map-makeing."
But- that wasn't the case. I made a test map- that went through with out a problem, but as soon as I remade my Yellow-stone. BOOM- FH crashed... I'm starting to think FH doesn't like YellowStone :/

I have a small idea that could possibly help...
Divide the map into sections? So you'd have the main map and connected to the other sorts of maps ^^
and:: How big is the map??
-
no- FH wouldn't load the terrain file :/ not that I would crash when I go INTO the map- I haven't been able to make it because everytime I type say... YellowstonwTerrain(.PNG)- FH immidetly crashes
-
Maybe just try doing each terrain with some tad of detailed section at a time? Otherwise I don't know ;-; + Would It be possible for me to see this terrain?

This may be the problem. In your map terrain; in GIMP or what ever you used to create it, make sure there's no "alpha channel." If there is, remove the alpha channel and export and test your map. It should work then. If you used any particles; make sure you check in your "MyObjects" folder and delete any duplicate particle files with "_0, _1, _2, _3, _4" and anything alike added to the end of the particle (check your paricle folder too).

So it crashes when you load the height map?
you probs already know this; but make sure it's:
- greyscale
- 513x513
- 1 layer
- .png
- and as Ace said, no alpha channel
if that still doesn't work, try to export the file to .jpg and then .png again. apparently this might help, but i'm not too sure.

Bizarre problem you have here.
Unfortunately, I don't know the cause.
I downloaded your terrain and tried it in my own Map Maker.
Crashed.
However, I tried re-exporting it, and now it works.

save this image to "terrains" as "Yellowstone.png" and then try it.
