I see alot of picture other characters with items like swords, horns, flowers and so on. What I'm wondering is how do you get those items? Do you make them yourself or do you download them from somewhere? And how do you get them to appear in the game? Please help me out here.

You can find them in the Other Mods/Creations section of the forums. You can make them yourself or download things from other people. Most packs have an instructional document inside of how to install. I suggest Ringo and Delay's pack:

A thing to note about items: Depending on what order you have things installed, what you see on players will differ. For example, if I have the order Hat, horns 1, cheese, toaster, sword on my list, and you have hat, cheese, toaster, sword, and if I have the third item on my list equipped, you would see it as your third item. So while I would be equipping the cheese, you would see a toaster.
... It'll make more sense in game, trust me xD

You can get them / put them on your character once you have the items by going into character edit and going to the fourth tab. You'll see your items there.
