Title: Adding a body of water to maps?!?!

Hey! If your reading this I reeeeaaally need some help! How do you add a body of water (pond, lake, canal, etc.) to your map? I know there's an option but how do I use it! And when I create my water what color does the backgroud have to be, like the part that ISN'T water! I realllly need help!!! Thanks in advance and Thanks for reading!
