Title: Forests...?
Post by: swiftflight on July 15, 2012, 01:49:36 am
I've noticed that one of the hardest parts of making a map is placing all the little random objects (Trees, rocks, plants, etc...).

So I was wondering, is there any way to make this tedious task easier? Is there a way to mass make forests? Or randomly generate them?

If you know anything that might help, please tell me...

Thanks in advance  ;)

There is no way to randomly generate them, no.
You can however, make a custom forest in Object Maker,
then when you use it in a map, you can just reuse it and rotate it so it dun look the same every time. c:

I've found that grouping a number of objects, like trees, in object maker, then using them as a "rubber stamp" to place out on the ground really saves a lot of work.

Perhaps another way would be to use larger trees for the "bulk", then add smaller ones around it?

Well, depending on how extremely large your forest is, a good way to keep lag down is to make things extremely oversized. Because if you have say 500 given fir trees, thats 500 fir trees for the computer to process. But if you have 50 oversized oak trees lowered into the ground, it still covers the same amount of space and still leaves the feeling of a huge forest.

Here, I have an example if I'm unclear. XD
Example w/ Acacia trees (http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/7465/screenshot0616201214332.png)
Example w/ Oak trees (http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/515/screenshot0704201213104.png)

May not look like much, but this is actually a huge map. It has zero lag. Perhaps this idea may be of use to you. ^^

Iv'e tried making re-usable forests in Object Maker, and it works for flat areas.. The only problem with it is if I want to make a forest on a slope... If I try to do that, there will be floating trees...
Also, this doesn't work for for things like grass... Unless I want the grass to be bigger than the trees...

And as for making over sized trees, I do that, but it still takes a lot of effort if I'm trying to forest a 30,000 big map...  :-\

You'll just have to either use the group of tress whenever you can and fill in the rest of the slopes, or do it all one by one then.

I wish there was an easier way too, but, sadly, there isn't. :/

Maybe you already know, but anyway i will tell it.

when you place one object, press the C key to clone that object, it is easier than clicking the place button.
