I lost one of my characters in Ascension Island, as I couldn't log on and that's where I left it when I logged off. Just to be sure, I logged on on another character and went into Ascension Island. I got the same message as before, "Cannot connect to map server." I'm guessing the map crashed, or is it just my connection?

It's probaly only temporary, you'll get your character back soon!
Though it may be because too many people are in the map at once, I never heard of that when it comes to Accension though. . .
Or as you said, It's just your connections.

It's the map; three of my characters are eaten by it, ha.
