Title: Gender Identification
Post by: Fellthefox on August 09, 2012, 05:18:47 pm
So Iv been here for a little bit and Iv found something that just makes me want to -face paw-.
People who put an M or F in their name to tell their gender.
Normally I would see why it be there, even more for names that could be placed for either.
But what im starting to see alot is names like "Samantha F Fox" or "David M Dragon" (just examples, not real).
I thought maybe they would be simply stating a last or middle name using the letter, but when these people are
confronted, they only claim it to be because of gender.
Why are people doing this? When your clearly a female character, why do you need to put a letter there?
I just see it as kinda pointless.  ::)

Well some of the manes make you look like a girl (NOT BEING MEAN TO ANYBODY) So thats why they put M for male or F for female. That even includes like example, if you a male pup but has girl colors, you put M for male.

I think some kind of male/female option in the char creator would help this a lot, but I don't know what the difference could be... I would say size but the size options are already there and are cool, so we wouldn't want to get rid of them... any ideas?

I think it's just because people do not want to take two seconds of their life write or read a biography, that's what it is there for to start with.

Then again I also believe that it's to 'advertise' for 'mates' or something along those lines. :/

When I started this topic looks wernt even on my mind^^;
I was just looking at names Xb
People will give them selves an easily identified male name yet still put an M in their name.

I think I shall expirement by creating a pink fox with a boyish name and an M in the name.

People do it because there is no obvious gender differentiation in the game and as some people have already stated here the mane styles do not always do a good job at showing if your character is a male or female. Alot of people put the M or F in their name for the sake of RPs etc so people can stop confusing their character as a male when its a female or vice versa... it makes total sense. It's a common problem on here and thats why I already suggested this possible fix for that issue

I only put it on the end of some of my characters names because they either don't look typically male or typically female and have rather ambiguous names, and to be honest, I got tired of people coming up to me, asking me my gender, then walking away when the answer doesn't suit them; it saves time and bother. And, if you look at things from a realistic perspective, animals would be able to tell each other's gender by scent at a distance rather than going up to them and asking.

People tend to do that for role-playing purposes.

What I hate much more is when people have "wolf", "lion/lioness", or "fox" in their name. Those three are really obvious, but still they put it in >.< I saw something once which really made me cringe: a character with "F Lioness" in it....those BOTH COMMUNICATE THE SAME THING O_O you can't very well have a male lionESS, can you? ARGH!
It's perfectly justified with things like dragons, birds, or horses of course :P anything that's not immediately obvious from their appearance.

Instead of putting an unslightly random letter in my name, I prefer to place all of my characters information in their bio... where it belongs.

It's all very well doing that, I write bios God knows how many lines long, but must people seem to have forgotten they are there and don't read or write bios anymore.

Yes, but perhaps their characters are nameless, in which case they would be called simply "fox" or "lion".

OMG! you just said the "F" and "M" word! lol Ya, I'm up for destroying all the "lion" or "wolf" in the name, and the "F" and "M" too. I think it's pointless, and personally, I'm happy when a person comes up and asks my gender, lets me know im diffrent :) (OFFTOPIC! -is listening to calming nature music with birds chirping, gets a sudden urdge to play Okami- OFFTOPIC! felt like sharing lol)

You think that's bad? I just came back from Fluorite a few days ago and just as I was crossing the stone bridge I saw a person with the name "Female Lioness" and the character had an entire male lion mane...

I do that to some of my characters, while others I don't. If I have a character that has a name that is obviously a girl's name (or a guy's name) I don't put the F or the M. If it is a name that can belong to either gender, I will sometimes put it there.
I see other players in the game do it, but I really think nothing of it.

Be cool if they could choose male or female and then a blue male symbol or pink female symbol appeared next to the character name in the game.
I made an example with mine

Sorry its so tiny, ....but yeah

Unisex names.
They're extremely confusing to people.

Hatarai
Kirtia
Jeyta
etc, confusing right? Hatarai would be male, Kirtia would be female, Jeyta would be both.

Hope that answered your question.

I agree, people do that instead of mate begging. Even though i'm not a fan of mate begging in anyway, at least is stops people from advertising in general, or atleast helps a bit. Maybe it will stop one day.~
