Title: Terrain Mask question (Answered)
Post by: Hawkwing on September 11, 2012, 10:45:03 am
I'm doing my first map, and am currently on the terrain mask. I had it all finished and went to upload it. When i tried to turn different layers different colours, each one changed the same area, near the center of my map. I have to be quick so I can't explain more and I won't be on until later, I'll check on this later. Thanks!

When putting the mask with the Terrain, you need to upload them in Map maker at the same time, otherwise the placing will be off.

I'll try that now, be right back to tell the results

If I understood right and did what you said (Changed the terrain mask to default then back to my mask?) then it didn't work. Any other suggestions...?

Are you using the standard red, green, and blue in your mask? It might go funny if you use any other colours (not likely, but it could be)... Otherwise, you might try re-saving your mask uner a different name and trying again?

A simple mask is

Red

Green

Blue

These three are the three different textures you can have on a mask and the ONLY colors the mask responds on, any other color and it will go to one of the three that's the closest appearing like that texture in a darker or brighter tone.

If you want more textures there's 1 method I know of, but there's probably more. But in general I'd advice sticking to just 3 since that's the easiest one.

You can get two mask images, name them to two different things. Make them both black, the black works as transparent in this case. You can select 6 different textures, 3 on them each, and draw freely, but keep in mind that wherever you leave it black, it will remain black. Another thing is that if you draw 2 textures over each other that are on Different images it will turn out as glowy.

There's methods on how to prevent this and a fair amount of tutorials in the member made tutorials section if I'm not mistaken, but also on Deviantart. In general though, it's just to copy the mask in
C:\FeralHeart\media\terrains\default

Paste it into your map folder in the terrains folder.

And then draw red, green and blue as you want the textures, and just save it. Shouldn't even be any need to choose save as, but if you must, just save it as a png and it should work fine, can flatten the layers on it to be sure.

Well it should be working, I'm guessing it's the way you are saving it.

Make sure you flatten/merge the layers.

Try importing the watermill mask into your map plain off, do not edit it, just paste it into your map folder, open the map, and open the watermill mask before actually editing it. It should let you set one texture fine. If it does, then it means you are saving the image wrong. But really the mask is just usually a png image in RGB mode, 8-bits channel.

Try to flatten the layers as well

I think it figured it out. They're saving under my map name as a "GIMP image"., or .xcf. I re-saved it as a .png, off to check it.
