Title: ?.Books.?
Post by: Kasai on December 02, 2012, 07:16:50 pm
Any good books that you guys would recommend? I'm trying to get back into reading (school's limited me a bit) and I'm looking for some good books. Right now I'm reading 13 Reasons Why. Great book, but very depressing so far.

So, any good books, bad books, eh books? Feel free to rant as much as you want about your books, just try and not give many spoilers X3

Johnny the Homicidal Maniac for sure, it's a comic book though and it's violent and all. If your looking for a novel though I recommend "Teodora the Undrowned Child". I don't find many books interesting but that one I couldn't stop reading.

I love so many books that it's hard to choose which ones to recommend. I'd probably fill an entire pamphlet with all the books I want to recommend.

Right now I'm reading The Poisonwood Bible.

It's a cool book so far, with very engaging characters and the history of The Republic of Congo's independence serving as an awesome backdrop.

However, it's very clear that this author has an agenda, and she can get pretty ham-handed when it comes to getting the point across. Sometimes, it almost feels like the author is smacking me with a cut of raw steak yelling, "CHRISTIANITY IS EVIL!!! MEN ARE STUPID AND EVIL!!! MARRIAGE IS JUST A FANCY WORD FOR SLAVERY!!! AMERICA IS THE WORST COUNTRY EVER!!!" And I'm just cowering under the blows saying, "Okay, okay! I get it! Can we get back to the story now?!"

But if you can get past the ham-handed parts, it's well worth the read.

Hmm, I would say that the How To Train Your Dragon Series is quite good, and also the Zelda mangas are good.

I'm the same, I used to be glued to a book 24/7 but these days school has limited my time to read and I have a lot of stuff I like to do on the internet, as well as other hobbies like drawing and listening to music.

Anyway I've been trying to find a book that would get me hooked again for aaaages and I've just started reading the first book in the fourth cycle of the Warriors series by Erin Hunter. Unfortunately I have to agree a little bit with Zaroque here. I started reading the series when I was 11 and haven't stopped loving it since, so I guess really it is aimed at more of a younger audience, but I'm pretty sure I'm not the only 16-year-old who still likes the series. There are so many books in the series that it really does have that read-it-over-and-over quality. The thing I don't like about it is that, yes, the language can be VERY repetitive, and sometimes the plots can be too, particularly in the second cycle, The New Prophecy. I have to say though that since I've started reading the fourth cycle things have really improved (in the first book, anyway). So it depends on your taste, but the Warriors series is very popular, it has wild cats, prophecies, secrets and battles between four unique Clans. It's up to you whether you give it a go.

I'm assuming you've already read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins? If you haven't, I can't explain it - just read it!!

To be honest, I haven't read a really good book that is NEW for such a long time that I can't recommend you anything else. I hope you're enjoying Thirteen Reasons Why; it sounds very sad though and unfortunately I have heard similar stories about suicide. As for my recommendations, I know they're not much but I hope they helped anyway.

Merry Christmas! :D

Oh! Speaking of books about talking cats, here's a REALLY good one.

It's a lot like Erin Hunter's Warriors series, but better (in my opinion).

It's not a series (only one book), but it's written on a grand, epic scale, hearkening back to the classics like Beowulf and The Odyssey and Watership Down. This was also published in the 80's, so this predates Warriors.

As cliche as it sounds, anyone who's ever read Warriors should read this, because this book needs more fans.

Chasing Redbird was a nice book.
 The Under-land Chronicles.
The Old Willis place.
Jurassic park (Both of them) Were great.
The Andromeda strain (If you like science stuff. Otherwise it might be boring.)
My Side of the Mountain.
The Black Book of Secrets.

Hmm. Yep, Ink spell and the Percy Jackson books were also good.

I like the Warrior series, but I got this book set this christmas of an..interesting series. It's called Tiger's Curse. It's a mixture of adventure, fantasy, romance, magic, and beliefs. I was dubious at first, mainly because it's partially a romance novel. But its also adventury, and it reminds me a bit of Indiana Jones. It is focused on India, and it is about an american girl, and two tigers. I won't say anything more, in case you are interested. ^-^

Abomine, that book looks interesting. I will try and see of my school library has it.

(Kind of difficult to read though + the film plot was a lot different compared to the book)

I'm reading this book right now.

It's a lot like Watership Down, except instead of being about rabbits in modern England, it's about red deer in Medieval Scotland. It's pretty awesome.

And you have no idea how refreshing it is to see deer portrayed as tough, powerful, badass animals instead of timid, weak, sissy creatures that are always getting killed by wolves or humans.

The two books i adore is the series of unfortunate events. It's about three children who's parents where killed in a fire, and in their parents will, they have been left a huge fortune. But a greedy man wants to steal the fortune for himself and so in a 13 book journey, lots of unfortunate events happen that ruins their lives. Its not a happy book or one that has happy endings like most, but it can be amusing at some points, but i recommend it for 12+, since a few murders are involved. They where wrote by Daniel Handler, but his name he write's on the books is 'Lemony Snicket'

The next one is harry potter. Many people do not read the books because they are so long, but where would you think the film came from? I actually prefer the book's to the film, since the film leaves out allot of good scenes.

I love to read autobiographies. The ones i have read are mostly comedians, for example, i have read- David Walliams, Mirinda heart, Dawn french. People like that. They are for adults but i like to read about the people i see on telly.

If you're into science fiction I have two books I know that are good. ^^
The first is The Goodness Gene and the second is The Supernaturalists.

If you don't like science fiction and prefer historical fiction I suggest reading All Quiet On The Western Front. It's very sad and gets very...descriptive...when it comes to the fighting parts. It's also very beautiful and shows how much war affects the soldiers and stuff like that.

A series that I particularly enjoy is the Eragon series, the books are a little long but the story is really good.

Well, I did much enjoy the Harry Potter (J.K. Rowling) and Hunger Games (Suzanne Collins) series (Pfft, but almost everyone has already read those anyway now, right?), yet I did much enjoy 'UnEnchanted' by Chanda Hahn, and 'Prince of Wolves' by Quinn Loftis. Those are some epic books, dudes <3

I LOVE reading, and I heave a few suggestions -

This is my ALL TIME favorite series. A group of teens discover that they have dog-like powers. Their mystery is mushed into one big mystery of why the island is so secret, and what happened to the girl who was murdered. The third book comes out in march

The "Tigers Curse" series is about 2 ancient Indian princes and brothers under a 1000 year old curse where they are stuck as tigers. They meet a girl named Kelsey, who is said to help them break the curse

And then the NightShade series, about wolves and such.

Tom's Midnight Garden was definitely one of my favorites. Jane Eyre was awesome too. I just loved how the authors of those books actually went out into detail and used higher vocabulary, unlike alot of books you tend to see today. You could actually picture what was happening in the books. <3

Wolves of the Beyond is pretty good too, but not anywhere like Tom's Midnight Garden or Jane Eyre. I mean, the author isn't bad, but the writing isn't great either. But the storyline indeed does make up for it, and allows me to want to continue reading through the series. I would love to see how it ends. :3

It would also be epic if they made a movie based off of Wolves of the Beyond. <3

I just finished Tailchaser's Song. It was a great read! I almost liked it as much as Warriors. It was very interesting, and I couldn't put it down. It was one of those rare incidences where I felt happy with the ending. It certainly has a lot going for it. I found out a movie for it is in the making, and I am excited for it.

On a slightly different topic, I'm reading this right now.

So far so good, but there are a LOT of characters to keep track of. Thank heavens for the character appendix in the back of the book.

I'd strongly recommend anything by Isaac Asimov if you like SciFi, particularly Caves of Steel (essentially a detective with a robot partner solving a murder in a futuristic Earth). The bad news is that you may become addicted. The good news is that the man churned out so many books that it would probably take around a decade to read them all.

The Temeraire series is also incredibly good; it's historical fiction, but with dragons. You may not be surprised to learn that history is much more awesome with dragons in it. First book in the series is call His Majesty's Dragon, shouldn't be too hard to find.

I, Robot and The Bicentennial Man are my two favorites by Asimov. Once I'm done with A Game of Thrones, I'm going to start reading his Foundation Trilogy.

Ooh, forgot The Bicentennial Man. Loved the heck out of that one. I still live in the hope that someone will make a decent movie adaption some day... XD
