Title: How do you make maps public?
Post by: T0XIIIC on December 09, 2012, 04:38:27 am
I recently created a map and exported it. How can I make it public?

Simple! Just upload it to a file sharing site like mediafire, and post the link wherever you want to make it public.

Please avoid double posting.

Once you sign up for Mediafire if that's what you want to use, click upload and find your exported map file.

There are lots of different sites to upload to. Just search around for "free cloud storage". Mediafire is the one I trust since I've never gotten a virus from it.

I'm new to this, have patience.
If you are using Windows, and I'm on Mediafire, which folder to look in...?

I'm patient with newer members. Just pointing out that you should try to avoid double posting. Not the end of the world if it happens though!

Ah. I would look in exports.

After exporting it the files will appear in your exports folder. The files include:

- .fhm the map file
- .fho the object groups
- .fhs the custom sky file, if you used one.
- .fhw the custom weather cycle, if you used one.

You need to gather all these files and put them in a new folder, turn the folder into a .zip file so it's easier to download/upload.

When the folder is compressed you have to upload it to a file sharing site such as www.mediafire.com (http://www.mediafire.com) or www.zippyshare.com (http://www.zippyshare.com).

When you're done, give the download link to your friends. After downloading they need to open the folder and place all the files into their exports folder. The portal to your map should appear in Cape of Distant Worlds.

Winzip or Winrar

Ah, thank you.

If you're using Windows 7 for example you should be able to open it by double clicking, compress by Right-clicking>>Send to>>Compressed Zip Folder. Otherwise you could download WinRar, it's not free but there are free versions if you look around Google ;)

Okay, I have 7zip. Then, I upload the map into Mediafire, download it, and extract it. After that (this may not be organized) I put the whole folder into Exports, like a video said to on Internet Explorer. I usually use Google, I have a 32 bit computer, Windows Home Premium (Windows 7). Or do I do something else?

You compress the folder containing the exported files with 7zip, then you upload the compressed folder to mediafire. You do not need to download your own map since you already have it. Just give the download link to your friends and then they have to extract the files to their exports folder. Do not place the folder in the exports folder because it won't work, you only put files in exports.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium so you don't actually need 7zip. Right clicking and choosing Send to >>Compressed Zip Folder compresses it. Extracting you can just double click the zip file like a normal folder and drag the files elsewhere.
