Title: Rant: Requests & Ungrateful People
Post by: LordSuragaha on January 28, 2013, 05:52:02 pm
I don't usually do alot of ranting or complaining in general but this month I've had enough. Several times between Nov of last year to this month I've had preset requests coming into my inbox. I don't mind preset requests at all because I love making presets especially for other users but what I do mind is unappreciative people asking me for a preset. What do I mean by this? I mean the kind of people that come to me and give me screenshots of a beautiful preset someone already made of their character and tell me to redo it because they hate it. This has happened to me a total of 5 times within just 3 months... and each time I have denied the individual. Often these individuals excuse for not using the other persons preset is something stupid like I don't like how the nose looks, or the pelt is to dark now and I decided I want it lighter, or it's my fursona and this preset looks nothing like it (mean while I look at her fursona reference and the preset and they look exactly alike). Each time the preset that was already made for the person is incredibly beautiful and full of detail and exactly matches their reference... so what's going on here?

My reason for getting upset over this is because these individuals will refuse to use an entire preset over one tiny invisible "flaw". These presets are literally small works of art that each preset maker puts their own time & effort into making just to make them happy and they're just going to waste it. Then these people have the nerve to ask me to redo the preset... why so you can ditch my design to maybe? Worst thing is that this doesn't just happen with presets around here it even happens with art requests... Just a few weeks ago I looked at the art request section and noticed a particular individual asking for a certain picture to be made for use as a signature... The artist returned them with a lovely copy of the reference and what did the person do? They never thanked the artist nor did they use the artist's picture in their signature but instead went on requesting the same picture be redone by someone else. -face paw- I mean REALLY! People how could you be so down right rude and ungrateful? Well it didn't end there the second person made this idividual their art and yet again the person didn't use that picture either and instead went to DA and created a post that explained how no one has made this picture as beautiful as they imagined so please make it for them. So they want a masterpiece made out of a really terrible reference? I'll be blunt but that person is lucky they got any kind of art for what they were giving people as a reference. If they want something better then they should do it themself. Same said for presets.
- Alot of artist charge money for things like this. Be grateful that someone is doing it for you for FREE!
- These things take time to make. (time that alot of us could be using doing better things...trust me)

~Done ranting

I completely understand your pain; I've had similar issues with presets! It's very difficult to get things exact, and one often has to take minor artistic liberties to make the design work. If people are desperately after a preset and have a perfect vision of exactly what they want, they should perhaps consider learning how to create it themselves- as opposed to making someone work needlessly on a piece that'll inevitably be thrown aside. Appreciation and usage of artwork/presets is often all the artist asks for in thanks; it's beyond the boundaries of rude to even decline that gesture and haggle someone else to redo it! If they're a paying commissioner, it's a different story entirely, but freebies?

I've started to only accept complex requests from friends- people I know who will appreciate the preset and use it for many, many months; there's no point in putting 5+ hours of work into something that'd be brushed off in an instant by a randomer who, knowingly or unknowingly, stomps all over an artist's feelings with their blatant dismissal of other's work. It's selfish- and extremely rude; presets often take just as long- or longer- than a painting. :(

I can understand wanting a change after many, many months- but declining a piece entirely because of a minor flaw-...? I sincerely hope they don't say it flat-out to the artist's face.

I mean the kind of people that come to me and give me screenshots of a beautiful preset someone already made of their character and tell me to redo it because they hate it.

This is just down right disgusting! It is selfish, deceitful and just plain rude! I can't believe people have actually done this. Actually I can. There are some nasty people out there. I just don't get why a person would do that. You've asked for someone to do something for you, a kind and generous person has taken up the offer and you reward them by going behind their back to someone else saying you hate what they've done? Their work that they put their own time and effort into? Absolutely sickening!

Want something doing? You know what, do it yourself! That way it is only you that can be blamed for disappointment and not a kind and honest soul that works hard on presets and art.

I have taken preset requests for people before, and now I'm paranoid that these people have gone behind my back to another preset maker saying stuff like "Oh she didn't do this right," or "I hate how she did this bit." It makes me kinda sad and, for me anyway, damages one's pride - I wouldn't want to do anything like this for anyone again if I knew this had happened to me.

People, it really does not take much to say 'thank you', or to be honest with someone and tell them politely that you didn't like their approach on the subject matter. Seriously, it won't kill you! That way you don't hurt anybody's feelings, and perhaps you and the person making your preset/art would be able to fix whatever isn't quite right. Communication is key in this matter, and a bit of decency.

God... -_-

Okay, that's my rant over too xD

Poor Sura :(

This is one of the reasons I NEVER take requests, whether it be for a preset, map, or something else. Another reason is because... well you're right... it takes up alot of the artist's time. And time is something I really don't have much of. I do agree, preset making isn't an easy job. It wasn't easy for me making my first preset. In fact, it took me several tries and touch-ups to get it right.

I like how you do preset requests for those who don't have access to the right software, or don't have the skills to make one. I DON'T like it when people take advantage of those who do the work, or are ungrateful for the hard work the artist does.

You make an excellant point, Lord Sura!!!! Hopefully one of these inappreciative individuals will read this post and realize what they're doing really isn't cool.

Well, unlike some others... I am very appreciative of other's hard work... Even though I don't ask for people to make me stuff, I still understand that it took a lot of work to make it. Even if they didn't work that hard, I am still very glad about it. ^^

I have had to deal with certain things like this. I have seen people who bug for the presets like "When is it going to be done? It's taking forever!" and "I am requesting this preset because I have asked a number of people and they are just taking forever." I think that if the preset maker actually took the time to even CONSIDER making your preset, you need to be grateful. I know what it is like to have many preset requests, and it is just not fair that people complain about how long they are taking.

Good rant Sura. This might get through to some people, making a difference.

I don't think they'd make this sticky, it's not really something that's desperately important.

I don't think this topic is one to be stickied.. Even though LordS makes a really good point.

And all that makes commission requests really should think about their manners.. And if they aren't pleased with the result - maybe ask nicely if the maker could change that particular thing that bothers them? Instead of discarding all of something the maker might have put alot of work into.

Be honest, in a respectful and kind way~ ;3

I couldn't help but nod at mostly everything you are saying. It's downright sad that some people DO this. :P
Like literally..no joke, this is all true guys. People do this DX
Like someone from Feral Heart wanted me to make them a banner/signature (or whatever you call them) and me being a nice Jaguar, I said "ok sure" they gave me literally no good ref sheet to work off of, so I started sketching...and when I was looking up more about this particular individual to see if they have a better picture of there character...I end up finding like 7-8 pieces of art that did featured them, and none were used as there signature. Also when they posted them on Feral Heart, the user didn't even say a thank you or anything like that....just because its not what they expected. And this made me mad so I turned them down and said "use the other beautifully made signatures you were offered"...and she rudely replied.."But they are ugly, I want your signature drawing."
....
....... It's just down right rude I'm telling ya. The artist that put there heart on a projects, and then turning them down, it's seriously heart breaking.
Also side note guys, if you are getting a preset for free, then don't complain. I charge for my presets and you have to pay me DA points if you want one from me, but if someone is offering you a preset for free, then BE NICE!! I guess I'm getting to overheated by this cause me being a artist, I do put my heart and time into everything I make..and hearing this really does hit a nerve point for me that some people in fact do, do this.

Makes me kinda glad I'm not noticed...being as paranoid as I am.

Why? They take it for granted. For all the wrong reasons.
-If you want it to be done right, do it yourself. -.-

This is just terrible. That is... I can't explain how awful that is. For the person who created a preset for the ungrateful person... I feel bad for that artist.

Seriously, if I where you, you should actually stop making presets for people since most of them do not
know how to handle it. I mean, you dont jave to literally stop, but maybe take a break? They shouldn't
be using you for these things, why don't they fix it themselves? >:I
PM them back and complain to them about your preset lolno.
But I would tell them off, just saying. With my fancy words and all :3

This is horrible!  If there is one thing to do not like about the art then simply ask for them to change it when they got the time.  I do have several art pieces of the same character by different people but it is not because I hate them!  It is because I look at their art and think that I would like my own character drawn by this lovely artist.  I have only gotten one request by someone on FH.  She did not thank me but I did notice that she used it for her siggy so I assume she liked it.  I like it when people go on about how perfect your artwork is and how it was just what you wanted.  It makes me feel wonderful!  One person that did this and really made by day was JumperWolf and she is still using my work as her siggy.

I agree with this full heartedly, People put their time in it, when they could really be helping someone more grateful. I try to show a huge number of appreciation to people that make anything for me, mainly because It means the world to me, every drawing, every critique. Don't get me wrong, it may seem like I'm not using a drawing, but really, my whole roof in my bedroom is covered with them. People who happen to get a request  are lucky, and they don't realize it because they've never done something for others, never taken time out of THEIR day and be selfless and caring of others. People may even be requesting just for the interest of popularity, but if the drawing isn't to their standards, then they throw it away? That to me is disgusting. Now I don't mean to accuse anyone of anything, but if you ask to for something, and they take time out of their life to make it, appreciate it, and appreciate them.

Wheu.. I could go on forever but for now, I'm done and I got my point out. Thank you sura for bringing this to other people's attention.

I really don't like it when someone doesn't appreciate something that another fellow person has put their time into. It might not be exactly what they had imagined it to be but at least appreciate it. They tried their best and the requester should respect that. By not appreciating and being thankful what someone has done for you it hurts the persons feelings. I'm just repeating what other people have said but I had to put my opinion in.

I don't use presets b/c
1-idk how
2-idk what they rly are
so I don't ask for them either
-but-
I do make maps, and sometimes I will have someone who rewuests and they fill out the whole application and ask me to 'please' make it.
Then I have those ppl who make a whole paragraph that I have to read through to find what im looking for and once I give them the map link I never hear a whisper of thanx.
So yeah I see where ur going with this Lord

~Rant over as well

Wow, really? What they're doing is just not cool. Their offending the artist by asking a different artist if they could redo it for them. I mean really, haven't these people ever heard of Thanksgiving? They should be grateful. What these users are doing really disgusts me and I hope that they can figure out a way to change their attitudes.

I have to agree with Raw.
If someone asks me to make a picture of their character, and if they ask another artist, I'm going to tell this artist this fact, if the requester didn't thank me, and didn't use it either.
I honestly love art, and am grateful for it. No matter what, I love it. I thank all artists, no matter what, who do art for me. They have a unique way or drawing art, everyone does, like me, and all really. No one should be ungrateful.
Sure, it didn't come out as expected, but it can inspire you something a bit different for a change sometimes.
You should never be ungrateful for the thing you requested, honestly. It makes the artist feel bad, and think their art is bad, and they might even quit drawing as a wonderful artist.
I don't inspire that. I've been told no matter what, no matter how good other's art is, keep drawing, you will get better.
Honestly, those who are ungrateful for the stuff they got for free, and request someone else WITHOUT using it, is just rude. Honestly!
They should be told off. Suragaha, I have to agree. These ungrateful people... Puh.
Everyone's design is unique. If your ungrateful, try and make it yourself and get better and better every time! Just stop, really. You're lucky to get presets, maps and art sometimes for free when you request. All of these take time, don't you understand?
It's not a few seconds, it could be 12 hours to make one art request sometimes!
And err... Almost the entire day, as I said, 12 hours is almost the entire day....
So basically, the artist wasted their time just for your request, and you threw it away, ungrateful people out there.
Great job. *Sarcasm* I honestly hate greedy people, ya know.
End of rant~

Its understandable if you have kept someones art as your signature for a while, and you want a different request, like someone I know on the forums, she gets people to draw her fursona, but she thanks them and gives them credit, but this is disgraceful! Ugh, I don't make request shops cause I'm not skilled at anything like that, but I would 100% give NO ONE some of my failed art if they treated the previous drawers/maps/presets or such were treated like you described. I feel so sorry for you, I would absolutely hate if that happened to me.

But you have to believe that not all floofies are like these people, some are extremely grateful, and would never take a piece of artwork/preset/map for granted.

Ermagersh, I totally agree.

I'm new, I've never done presets, but when it comes to art requests this has happened to me a lot. I can't stand when they ask me to draw something because they didn't like what some better artist drew them. it makes no sense! So I feel your pain... .u.

It's the same thing with my art requests, people are so ungrateful. I remember a while ago I did an art request for some random girl. The first thing she did was point out what was wrong in it. For your preset requests, that's just downright mean. I can understand if they've had the preset for a while and just want a new better one, but just because they don't 'like' it or something wasn't the way they wanted in it? They need to smarten up and be more grateful. x-x
