Title: Mapped vs Mapless?
Post by: RisingLife on March 08, 2013, 02:14:52 am
So while derping on some random rp forums and what not, I have noticed some diversity in some FeralHeart members. Im sure most of you know about custom maps, but if not custom maps are just worlds (such as Flourite Plains or BonfireIsland) created by a player usually for an rp. Now some members like to strictly stay on these maps, hidden away from all the derps in the public maps. But yet others LOVE the normal maps, liking how they can easily join rps or just do random things. Now I used to like to stay in the custom maps, hiding from everyone (foreveralone) and just rping with my friends. But once my main rp died, I started to slowly creep back to the main maps. Now I only rp on the public maps, running around on my main character rping with whoever.

So what is your opinion? Do you like the main maps (Flourite, Bonefire, etc) or do you like the custom maps?

Hm..it depends on what map it is.
Some of the official maps I dislike, like South Pole and Last Cave. I just think they're really boring because nothing is in them and not much effort was put into them.
But some of the custom maps that players make are astounding and very beautiful, and I prefer those maps.

Most of the time though, I derp around on Flourite or Bon Bon just because it gets quiet in custom maps. ^.^

I think I would go for mapless because I like the public. But the roleplays with maps last longer.

Good point, custom maps do get a little quite, and sometimes a little too dramatic ^^;

I agree o3o I am still in a roleplay that I joined a year and a half ago (though it is slowly dying)

Yeah that is what I used to, but now im going on the public ones more often

well...i kind of like both because the normal maps are fun and they have good rps that are easy to join but they are full of den claimers, power players, and lag.the mapped rps are good too because if you wanted to rp in pridelands or some warrior territory you can do so.the bad thing about mapped places are that it is hard to find a rp at all since most of these maps are often empty.
but thats just my oppinion :P

I only join mapped groups! When I'm looking for a roleplay, I'm looking for something long-lasting, plotted and active-- most mapless roleplays disband within a matter of mere days. Whilst I've not found the 'right' group for me yet, I've had more luck in mapped roleplays than any other. :D

Otherwise, I just lurk in Ficho!

I honestly prefer mapless groups because anyone can join and no one will have the problem of downloading a map. I like RPing in public maps because it gives others a chance to walk into the RP. Of course, some unwanted trolls may come around and disrupt the RP... but there's a block button for that.

Mapped for me- then again I'm sorta picky just in general when it comes to roleplays. I roleplay literate, paragraph style and I find most people who do the same linger in roleplays with maps. In a mapped roleplay, that I run, I can control who is and isn't allowed in. I don't have to worry about powerplayers, iliterate and people bothering me while I'm roleplaying.

Maps let people be creative too. While maps can be a hassle for some to download at first, I'm for maps all the way. I do linger in FLourite and Bonfire to roleplay occasionally. But I find I have to deal with a lot of people who just.. don't roleplay well or up to my standards this way. You also run into a lot more people like: "O yo my names shadow n i'm a black demon wolf with red eyes n my mum and dad died by getting attacked by a buffalo when i was lil and.." Like dude, just, no.

Mapped.
Most definitely, mapped roleplays are my most ideal place.

While both have their positives, it's been my experience that you're more likely to have a consistent, long-running storyline and active members if someone puts the work into keeping a mapped roleplay up and running. It does have issues with getting the map to everyone, and of course keeping a lively member-base, but I really like the closer, more personal feel of a private map. It's more relaxed, and more than likely, people will read your posts with more attention, which really develops a nicer sense of presence per character, as well as mutual respect for each roleplayer.

That's not to say mapless RPs are terrible, though, since they're much faster to join and they're almost everywhere. It's more spontaneous, and I really enjoy the wide variety of them all-- my main complaint, though, is that a lot of people don't take them quite as seriously. They get distracted by the various stimuli around the public maps, and they're less likely to give a derp about reading posts other than those that are directly involved with their character, and the super-fast pace can sometime lead to a degradation of detail and, occasionally, artistry (this is a partial reference to the ratio of literacy to illiteracy).

And so. Those be my thoughts. I'll roleplay anywhere, but usually I end up preferring mapped roleplays in the long run.

This is interesting, the responses. From the forums I usually look around people who liked mapped like it because of the trolls, and people who like unmapped is just because of the inactivity. I've also had other people complain that mapped rp's felt hostile towards them, or unenjoyable, and others complain that unmapped rp's had too many unexpected vistors and that they disliked it. But i guess that is what you get with different opinions X)

Indeed so.
Mapless and mapped RPs have their pros and cons... but there is one thing I don't get. Why is it that some people in this community think that mapless roleplays are for "illiterates"? That's NOT always true. I've met some great "literate" roleplayers out in the public maps. Just because they are not roleplaying in a mapped RP does NOT make them illiterate at all.  >:(
NOT everyone can download a map. Often times it's not that they don't know how to do it, it could be for other reasons. I've met some players who have told me that they were not aloud to download anything onto their game because....
>> "My parents won't allow it."
>> "My computer can't handle the extra files"
>> "The game always crashes when I go into custom maps."
>> "My game can't handle a map with so many objects and details."
and so on, and so forth.

Anywho, as I said before mapless RPs are more of my bread and butter.

My opinion is that mapped RPs are far more organised than the mapless ones.I find it less boring because you'll always find some people to RP with.Plus, when mapless, you'll oftenely lose connection because of all the people struggling to get past the bad tokens.Well, this happens in Fluorite. In bonfire mapless RP is good but you're more likely going to find TLK ones. But mapped RPs require your permission to download stuff on your computer(sometimes you get a virus from them but that's when you encounter trolls) and it might not work at all thus you can't join one.

Mapped please. Though to be honest, I think this topic just depends what you are used to. When I first joined FH I was always in Flourite, so what kind of RP's do you think I liked better? Mapless. But all in all, I still prefer mapped RP's.
For the above reasons and much more. In a mapless RP you can't customize the map and make everything how you imagine it to be. Is there a public volcano map in FH? No. Is there a public mountain map in FH? No.
Well in mapped RP's there isn't any lag from people and the maps can be beautiful. x.x <3 -gives Whitey a nudge-
I have my own RP as you can see in my signature so I obviously know the cons. Keeping your members active. :P But once you have a good group of people that stay active, and you keep getting more members after that, it'll just keep building up until you have a nice active RP. It just takes a lot of determination to get past the first month of the RP's existence where you are still trying to get active members.
I don't mind trolls in FH, I don't really mind any of them. I mean, what's to worry about when there's a block button? XD So a mapless RP could be good too.

-Feels totally loved- <3 Eeeee, thank you, lovely Tidey. -bounces- ^.^ Your maps are very nice, too, though. c; I've only seen a couple (or maybe just the old spring map, actually), but I love the detail and really balanced feel you put into your maps~<3

And, @LadyAli, I totally understand what you mean, there.
I may have actually come across as seeming biased, like I think all people in mapless roleplays are illiterate-styled. But no, I don't believe that. XD It's not like I dislike roleplaying with different writing styles... Except for the extreme end of wolfspeakers, but we won't go there. o-o
I have actually met plenty of fantastically literate roleplayers in public maps, myself. I see it all the time when I'm running through Ficho, and even on the L island I've seen some very flowering and imagery-filled posts as I run past (and sometime join c;) the prides out there. c:

There are great roleplayers everywhere, for sure. xD I just prefer mapped roleplays, though, mainly because it's a more personal, relaxed setting.
