Title: Ask Genesis :3
Post by: Genesis9 on April 02, 2013, 04:37:29 pm
Hey everybody! Thought it might be fun to start up one of these!

If you don't know, I make maps for Feral Heart, ranging from Ember Island, the Forest of Lights to one of my newer creations, the Verto Animus Map Pack. So I thought it might be nice to have a little ask me thread if you have any questions about how I make my maps or anything really ^-^ I'm happy to answer any questions you may have for me so ask away :)

Hellu ouo

xD My first map? Ah, it's hard to remember which was the first, but I'm fairly certain it was a map called 'The End'.

Made for my Dragon Rp 'Draconifors' it was a rag tag little map that used the Watermill height map and mask, with lava under the water and dark grey ground surrounding it. It was supposed to be the city of the 'Darkness Dragons' after it had been thrown into ruin, so I raised the height of the map by quite a bit (which made it tricky to navigate by foot ;-;) and placed a ruined palace atop one of the hills. There were also three floating islands in the center, a graveyard near the edge of the lake, a small temple that marked the bridge to an encampment across the water and a sandy path that led all around the map.

Needless to say, as my first map, it wasn't the best, but I figured out how to add music and a dark grey sky to help with the ambiance at least :) The music was 'The Forbidden Pool' from Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers for anyone who's curious!

Despite my lack of skill as a map maker back then, the group got quite a bit of use out of it, and some pretty epic role-play instances as well! It was where we held the finale to our First Season, and I miss visiting it now a bit, as it was lost when I got a new laptop o3o

Great first question! Thanks WhiteLightHeart! x)

Let's see...

If you had the chance to modify one of the game's official maps which map would you pick and how would you change it :)?

o-o (I used the WaterMill heightmap for my first map, too. xD)

But, still, for a first map, you really went all-out with it! Awesome stuff, dear! :D I especially like the multiple floating islands, and the fact that you went and put lava, and even some music, is really quite unique for a first map.
Very nice stuff, though I am sorry you lost the map. Old stuff like that still holds a little sentimental value, no? <3

You're very welcome, dear, and thanks for answering! 'Tis very cool. c;

Ah, that's a tricky one, there is so much that could be done for all of the current main FH maps (one problem that I've always had is that I wish there was a staircase beside the waterfall in Ficho so you could actually jump back up to the top level without spamming the prtscn key xD)

But I think I would have to choose Flourite and just give it one big overhaul, mainly I would want to update the heightmap and make it a bit more interesting/realistic, then I would want to add some more structures that people could congregate around like Stone Bridge, but only a tad more interesting >u< I'd also want to re-vamp the current locations and make them larger and more fun to be around! Like the N/Z for example, I think i'd put something really cool there, along with adding some stuff to the barren wasteland that is the + !

There's so much to do in that map I could hardly list the things I would want to change x'D But the only problem I would have to worry about was to make sure it wouldn't lag o3o Because that would not be good!

Ah, one more thing, I'd add a cool bridge type thingy that led out to the island where the CODW Portal is as well so people don't always have to swim to get there ouo Along with fixing all the current problems with the floating meshes and stuff.

Thanks for the Question Lord Suragaha! I've actually thought about what I could change in the main maps from time to time, but it was kinda nice to flesh it out a bit :)

@WhiteLightHeart

The old stuff deffinatly holds sentiment, even if sometimes I just want to delete all my old maps that I /do/ have in a rage xD And no problem! Twas a pleasure to tell you about it owo

Squee, thank you for sharing, floof~<3

Hm... Now, if you could be any animal for a day, what would you be?

That's an easy one x3 I'd defiantly want to be some type of bird, a Red Tailed Hawk or some sort of Eagle, because i've always dreamed about having wings and flying up there among the clouds since I was a kid! Even if it was only for a day, that would be amazing!! :D

You like making maps, eh...

What would your reaction be if someone came up to you with an OS map and said "Make me one of these would you?" Do you have OS maps in Canada? I'm not sure... :/

Lol yeah, we have those too x3 Most of them are just these huge maps that take forever to unfold and re-fold properly whenever we're on a road trip :P

But if someone asked /me/ to make one of those? xD Well I wouldn't know where to begin really! I'd probably just direct them to the nearest convenience store where they could purchase one. Or tell em to look it up on google maps!

Yep, those are the ones XD I wouldn't blame you. I saw a video on how those maps are made in a geography lesson ages ago and it looks to be really hard work.

Do you like potatoes?
What does your username mean? (Like what it means to you)
What is your most favorite thing to wear?
Where do you get inspiration for your maps?

o3o Ohhh lots of questions!

I like potatoes in many shapes and sizes, just not raw x3 I like em fried and mashed the best :) Not so much boiled but it'll do. My cousin used to think that potatoes were taking over the world when she was younger xD

Some people think that I might have gotten my username from the Final Fantasy character, Genesis, but I choose my name as the book from the Bible. I've never been very religious, and of late have struggled coming to terms about if I do believe or not, but I've always been fascinated with the idea of creation, a new beginning, the start of something amazing. That is why I choose Genesis as my alias, and to this day I am very pleased with my choice.

My most favorite thing to wear is probably my sterling silver replica of the One Ring from the 'Lord of the Rings'. I got it for my 19th birthday, and I've never parted with it since. I've been a huge fan of the books and the films since I was a kid and I just love wearing it <3

I get inspiration for my maps from a lot of things, ranging from the nature I see around me and the music I'm listening to, to the films I've watched and the other games i've played. Stories play a big part as well, for example I took a lot of inspiration from 'Pans Labyrinth' when I was making the Underworld map a while ago. I also study maps that other people have made and try to emulate what I like in those maps within my own work. I drew a lot of inspiration for my Verto Animus map from the Carpe Diem map pack, and I think Delay is absolutely fantastic when it comes to creating 3D worlds. I find I'm always keeping my eyes open for new inspiration whenever I'm thinking about starting a map, and sometimes, when I see something like a picture or a bit of nature like a beach or trail I find myself thinking 'now that might be really cool to add into the map'. So basically it's just a jumble of stuff all mushed together to create the final project ^-^

Thanks for the questions Bouncy! :3

What are your favourite kinds of maps to make?

I enjoy making maps that present a challenge, something new that i've never dealt with before. I love overcoming the obstacles of incorporating a difficult or tricky idea into the maps I make and finally seeing it through in the end. I don't really like re-creating maps again and again, like for example I did the Pride Lands map, and then I did a 'realistic' version of that, and although the two are profoundly different, because it was based on a similar subject manner I didn't get into it as much as I would have when designing a map I was more interested in.

I think I love creating maps with the 'realistic' base now, like the Verto Animus maps, but I enjoy adding in that flare of fantasy, it leaves it open for me to add wonderful things into my maps, and make them something more that what they would be if I just left them completely realistic.
