Title: Favorite Art Program?
Post by: ~Stargazer~ on June 03, 2013, 03:22:02 pm
I just wanted to see what the majority of the FH Community used for their digital art c: This might kinda help me choose which program I want because I'm ready to start digital art but I'm not sure which one to use. I've also heard of people using a tablet to help with their art. Do you use one? If so, does it help?

Professionally in the working world, you will have to learn how to use Photoshop. I use it for all my digital projects and work. It's not free mind you, for photoshop you do have to pay big bucks for the adobe bundle. I heard GIMP is good, although I personally have never tried it but hey....it's free

I hear the Adobe Photoshop is good too but if I use Photoshop then I'll have to do all my work on my moms computer and if I choose GIMP I can do it on my computer and I'll be able to scan my sketches into my pc. But I've never heard of SAI so I wanted to see if it was good or not.

I use Paint Tool SAI. It's free and easy and I honestly prefer it over any other Photoshop because of it's simplicity. If you use your imagination with the paint brush tools and put some effort it, you can make it look like it was made in Photoshop. I think I'll always use SAI

If I were you I would pick Paint Tool SAI a longshot over Gimp. Though that's just me, pick whatever you're more comfortable with.

I drew on photoshop with a mouse for years, and i regretted staying that long without a tablet. you can definitely get to a certain standard with a mouse with practice but personally i think that a tablet is worth the extra money in the long run and once you get used to it, it's a lot more enjoyable as well:)

I like to use Gimp really, I'm still learning it though. I don't know how to draw without drawing over the lines really, which upsets me a lot. But I've been learning, and even messing around with filters did quite a few good art pieces. Gimp's free, and once you mess around and get used to it you can practice and make good art for free. That's what I like about it. But, I'm still learning how to use it. I'm really confused on it but I might search YT on how to draw better on it.

Personally, I like to use FireAlpaca for drawing the lines on art and outlines etc then colour, edit and finist it off in Autodesk Sketchbook. I love firealpaca because of the smooth touch it gives (And it works GREAT with a tablet) and I adore Autodesk Sketchbook because it has so many tools, it's simple to use and gives a professional touch. :D Firealpaca's free but unfortunately Autodesk sketchbook is not.
Though for presets I like to use GIMP or Autodesk Sketchbook. c8
I highly recommend using a tablet because it's SO much easier and generally makes the lines nice and smoother than what you can do with a mouse or touchpad.

In SAI you can do that. You can do a lot of things in SAI. I find gimp a bit sketchy at times and it kind of lags, and I don't enjoy the way most of the brushes still have the "Microsoft Paint" type of look to them. Myeh, just use whatever you're comfortable with, again.

I use an old version of Adobe Photoshop. I do believe it's a CS2 version. A computer repairman installed it onto my desktop for me for free a few years ago. I've been working with Adobe Photoshop since 2005. It's a really good handy tool to use when doing digital artwork. One of these days I ought to buy me a draw tablet. When it comes to buying the software, it will cost you a pretty penny... especially if you buy some of the newer versions. What I mean by pretty penny is that the cost could be up to $600. Older versions can be around $200 to $300.

I use a tablet as well, so SAI and Photoshop art both come out very smoothly. If you don't use a tablet in SAI sometimes it can look rather choppy and not pretty to look at. I suggest if you don't have a tablet, use paint, gimp, or photoshop. Just not SAI. xD

I use the program GIMP with a computer. I use it just to make terrains for maps basically. But sometimes I attempt to draw and it fails... A lot. Whatever, I'm learning. My family can afford a tablet it's just we don't want to waste money getting one if it's only for drawings I can do on paper. A few times I've used Paint but seriously... Paint isn't that good.
Photoshop I've used in school before. I don't want to waste my money on a program I'm never really going to use. I'm not a great big fan of doodling on the computer.

For "in-depth" art I use PSE. However I believe I was heavily influence because the only reason I use PSE is because I was suckered into a tablet that came with it along with Corel. I do like that one too but I don't do major thing with it. What a waste of money for a tablet I don't even use. At-least it came with PSE though.

I.. have yet to meet a person who prefers their mouse over a tablet; until now, I suppose.
I could never really get used to Corel's and Photoshop's interface, so I just don't like them. Same goes for GIMP and probably anything else out there.

Pardon me, I tripped up. I did not give any indication as to what I prefer using. Nether tablet nor mouse, I actually use a scanner. My line-art is cleaned in PSE, then I add the colour, usually, in PSE. After all it is near impossible to use a mouse-pad accurately, or is it? My fingers are quite long so it's very cramped and uncomfortable, I don't even try.

I use gimp. Its free and easy enough to use. It took a bit to figure out how to use layers though... their are plenty of tutorials on using it on youtube. I only do presets though.
Gimp is on tablets??

Sai, Gimp, and Paint with a tablet.

I can use a variety of art programs, Gimp, regular Paint, Sai, Photoshop, doesn't matter. Give me a few minutes of time to draw and we have a new picture. Except the tablets, though, can't do tablets. Even months and months of practice could not do it for me.

Gimp is good for simple things, however the best program (In my mind) is Photoshop.
