Sometimes when I'm walking around in-game I see such awesomely created characters, and I look at my character and realise how dull it looks xD Has this ever happened to you?
-
Haha, I must admit it sometimes happens to myself. However, I look down on my character to see what he/she has & the other user's character doesn't. That way I think of the positives on my character.
At the end, it's all about the person's choice.

This is like saying how do noobs make their characters so noobish. XD
Anyways, all literal intents aside, it's
just how we see things.
My character Anahi just looks cool to me, and I spent a while wondering how I would design her.
Sometimes, it's just randomly thrown together characters, and others.... Just take your time.
It's really just how you see it. ^.^

It used to happen to me because I wasn't putting effort into it and I was just taking ideas from the characters I saw in-game. However a few months ago i started to really put some thought into my character, And using items and such I created a basic character which a lot seem to notice and pick out from the crowd. I am actually now surprised that people 'like' it and sometimes I even get these annoying whispers saying "Lovely character, how did you make it?"
Lol, well i won't say how I made it because I'm bad at explaining and whispers have limited characters so there is only so much I can put and i'd be there forever explaining. However I can fully say on here that-
I think of a random yet 'natural' colour like from a timber wolf and try to meddle with the colours until I find a desired one. After that I try to find a suitable marking to go with it and also meddle with the markings color until it suits the pelt and underfur. I find that making my characters eyes cyan or blue, gives a certain feel to it.
But that's all that I can think of... xD

There are awesome traits in mostly all characters people make. It's like that old yet inspiring phrase a wise man once said.
"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"
Of corse there sometimes when I look at others and say, "man that's a good look" but generally it all depends on the person themselves. XD
If what you see inspires you to make a better looking character then go for it.
-
Indeed.
I would say rather myself already have the opportunity to make lovley characters. It will take time until you reach your
own best style, it will take a few months :3. If you try to put effort into it and try not to make it too bright or too dark,
then I would say your going on very well.
Note: Stealing styles is not an option, in the future will be confused to what you would rather do.

You just have your own sense of style for your characters. YOU make what YOU think looks best to YOU.

When I was a noob.... my characters were lame because I would name them something like "Storm" or "Breeze".

But then I was creative and came up with other names like "Ahkrin" and "Rahzun" 8D

I still name my characters either Crystal or Breeze but sometimes I name them Accalia or Onai or even Konai
-
Yes, I've seen some pretty decent-looking characters, and I've seen many ugly ones. But just as Feareh said, "Beauty's in the eye of the beholder." Sometimes people make their characters based on their personality and their pasts, and really with looks everyone has their own opinions. ^^
-
It really depends on your own style. I seem to stay within more grey toned, and duller coloured characters. (also due to my slight colour hue issue with my eyes.)
-
Often times they are just ideas that come to my head after reading something, watching a movie or show, Roleplaying, a discussion or just looking at pictures over Google! Though awesome character ideas can come from anywhere and often times can be something that someone favors immensely.
-
I put very little thought into the actual appearance or design of my characters.
I simply look up a reference picture of the species and mess with the sliders until I have something decent. I don't attempt to make my character's design look "pretty" or "unique", just realistic for the species and not hideous to look at.
For me, a character's appearance means absolutely nothing. What matters is the character's backstory, it's personality, and development.
That is all that matters.

Okay, so you want to make a great-looking character?
First, pick a color scheme. Look up some color scheme generators. Next, choose your markings carefully. Does it clash? Is it too soft-looking?
You may want to use different fur textures for your character; the colors may blend better if that's your thing.
But, this is my opinion. A lot can go into a character if you want it looking perfect. I personally like characters with varying shades of brown-beige.
However, as XenonUnicorn said before, it's not really appearance at all. It's more about how your character IS, than what they look like.
