Title: This bothers me...
Post by: Kastilla on August 20, 2014, 09:00:33 pm
Bonjour, mon amie~ I just have something I am concerned about, well, it makes nervous.
I have seen that in posts that floofs have been calling themselves "retarded" or just simply put "I am a retard". I don't know about you, but it makes me feel concerned. I don't like negative self-talk at all, but somethings I can take, but someone calling themselves a "retard" I think it's not good. Calling yourself a "retard" is not healthy thinking, and it's nothing to joke about - now I am not going to force positive vibes, and theraputical terms down your throat. I am just suggesting to use another word other then "retard". I know you can't control people and what they say, but we can at least reinforce the "look before you post".
Thank you, Wolfie.
(*This is in no way to accuse anyone of doing anything, it's just a topic of discussion that I feel should be talked about*

I agree, Wolfie.
I've seen people call not only themselves "Retarded," but also said it toward others.
It saddens me to see this, actually. I Really don't think it should happen.

I also think people have actually forgotten what "retarded" was originally used for. It's for people who are mentally challenged; Who can't fully develop. I think it's rather rude tho call someone, or yourself retarded when there are people out there who actually have a mental disorder and can't help it. It's sad, really.

To be honest, it's a huge pet peeve of mine for someone to use a term/word that they don't properly know how to use, such as the word "retarded". -Groans-
My cousin often jokes about this and I've seen multiple people in-game and on the forums joke about it. Now, retarded isn't necessarily a "bad" word, atleast not where I'm from, but rather a slur - which is why I never use it, it could offend someone from somewhere else.
But that's just me, I suppose.

Well, when my dad, my sister, their friends, and I are joking around, we use the word retarded. For the longest time I didn't know the true meaning of of retard, so I thought it was okay. I only use it sometimes, but normally I use the word "derp" in place of it. I am sure some people would get offended by the misuse of that word, and people have. Really, you made a good point, it's not okay to use it that way, and people should really stop, but we can't control them, so this is a reminder.

I agree with you, Wolfie.
As stated above by Star, people forget what 'Retarded' really means. They think it's actually a normal slang but it's not. It's a mental person and it saddens me when people say they're or someone is retarded, well unless someone is mentally ill, but that happens rarely when someone actually says someone is retarded. It's clearly an offense to the mentally ill people.
It bothers me as well.

F U L L F E R A L M E T A L

Hello, I'm intruding. ^-^ Anyhow, the word 'retard' is severly forbidden in my household, being that I have several family members with Autism and it hurts to be called that or even make fun of it. For all those posting things like : I'm a retard, or , I'm retarded : should be informed that it can be insulting to others -- including me. I try to spread the word on my facebook pages for Autism and the effort has been put to good time, but the ones who continue to use it as a joke? Well, let's just say that you're not on my friend list..

If you really want to categorize yourself as something most people can't help, then be my guest, but don't come knocking at my door trying to sell those negative cookies. -ShakesHeadInDisappointment-

Aye Wolfie. Couldn't agree more with you. I mean, if you say something self negative as a joke (Example: "Oh XD. Didn't realize that! Heh, I'm kinda stupid at times.") then fine. I believe the word retard should NEVER be used, even as a joke, considering how offensive it is.[/color] People usually say it as a joke, and I honestly dislike when they do (though I choose not to tell them or get involved or start preaching, considering I'm turning 13 and not the wisest person). It IS a real condition, and you should never use it as a joke.

Whilst it is a sign of negativity about one-self, we cannot go around telling others to refrain from calling themselves that. Yes it may be unpleasant for others but to be quite honest, it is not offensive to oneself or "concerning" if they are not bothered by entitling themselves to a "retard".

Sometimes however, they simply mean it as a joke; even I, myself use it when in quite awkward situations which I may have sparked off. Yes, you can sometimes find yourself in a very uncomfortable situation as others may find it quite "rude" and inappropriate for obvious reasons; disabled people shouldn't be taken fun of.

I understand why this is a concern to you. Honestly I find it as  a concern as well I don't like talk that negative about one's self or about another floof. Though I have to admit it is hard to do anything about it because it's what one would say about themselves. Now if they ever say something like that about another floof then maybe it could be talked about to not do something like that, but for right now I am not sure.

I completely agree with you. I find it a bit disturbing when people use "retard" as a way to describe themselves/other people. Far too many people use the word out of context in general. I've seen people use it as a joke, but personally I don't find it funny.
I think that some people call themselves a "retard" in a form of self-expression towards themselves. They think they're stupid, dumb, etc, so they use the term, "retard" because that might be what they think it means. It's so sad to see people forget the real definitions of words, and now they're completely changing them. It bothers me because someone who's just messing around or thinking low of themselves refer to themselves as "retarded," when there are actually retarded people who physically and sometimes mentally cannot control their actions. I think it's offensive and disrespectful to people who actually have a retarded illness- they can't help it. They certainly deserve as much respect as anyone else, and I'll bet you won't see them joking about it, either.

I see this word used around on FH (and other games, too) a lot, and like many others, it saddens me to see. It really makes me wonder whether or not kids actually know the real definition of the word, but even still, I'm sure there are trolls out there who probably would teach kids to use the word and tell them it's alright to call people "retarded", and possibly tell them the false definition. But, those kids should be smarter than that and not use a word that they cannot properly define

I personally don't like using, or people using the word in a way to describe/insult themselves or others, as people can easily take offense to the word.
I tend to use "silly", unless I do something really stupid, in which case I just use "stupid". :I

We've all got to consider the people around us, their thoughts and feelings.

It REALLY REALLY scares me when someone calls themselves retarded. "People sometimes really need an inspiration to let them see that no matter what they call themselves or what they think of themselves, they truly are an amazing individual and have talents that others may not have. Even if you are disabled you are capable of reaching amazing goals in your life. As long as you stay positive about you and your life you can be at the top." -Sergey- (Me of course)
