Title: Just another map question
Post by: DragonFlower on October 07, 2014, 10:00:48 pm
Hi, hi!
I'm just another noob-ish map maker in need of an answer, please!

Okay - so I've been making this map on my Dell laptop, which is a known flake when it comes to graphics and processing, etc. I figured it wouldn't hurt to make a minimalistic detailed map, but as it turns out, I can't do minimalistic, and it now has over fifty meshes detailing just one, small area. Due to this, my laptop cannot physically handle the map, and it's EXTREME lag.

Now, I was wondering, could I possibly transfer the map to a better computer to edit WITHOUT losing the items I've already place? Is that possible? If not, I understand, I'd just be rather disappointed I'd have to remake what I've already placed.
Thank you!

Yes it is possible, the issue for most is really knowing what files they'll actually need and sometimes they make things worse for themselves by placing everything in random places within the FeralHeart game folder itself. But the whole idea is really that you mimic the current layout you have on the currently installed game, and place all the stuff used by the map maker in the same place in another installed folder of FeralHeart, whether it's on another computer, or another game folder on the same pc.

If we are just going to make a simple list of the things you need it would be.

-All the meshes, sounds, materials, currently used within the map or for your object groups or even weather
-You need the actual map folder itself that you should have inside of "FeralHeart\media\terrains" along with the content within
-You need the .map file inside of "FeralHeart\media\terrains". Goes by yourmapname.map

If you were organized when making your maps the process is very straight forward and it should just be to copy everything and paste it into another game folder as long as it's in the EXACT same place as when you made it on the other computer. It's kinda a thing where you learn by doing since some things work even if they aren't correctly in the right place, while others will whine and nag and not load the map or content, depending on how you made the map and what you are using.

Sorry for muddy reply, but sometimes everything isn't straight forward.

Thank you very much, Red!

Feel free to lock away; that pretty much answers my question 100%. <3
