Title: Terrain!
Post by: ThatRandomTypo on June 28, 2015, 11:14:22 pm
Everytime I type the terrain file in when I'm trying to make this one map, my game freezes and absolutely nothing changes! Am I doing something wrong? The terrain mask works fine, but the terrain itself isn't loading!

Check the terrain file for these:
-Image is 513 x 513 pixels
-Greyscale image
-A .PNG file
-Named (mapname)Terrain.png

So, it turns out it was 152x152. I went to fix it and did so. Now, I don't remember where to put the terrain mask and height map ;-; I'm a dummy

Everytime I type the terrain height map in, it crashes. I don't know what I did wrong, but I'm starting to think my png file might have some transparent parts in it. What are some other things that might cause it to crash?

Hmm...

Did you use any layers while making the image? If so you'll need to completely flatten the image. If you're using gimp, all you have to do is right-click and select something along the lines of "flatten image".

Transparent bits could cause problems, in that case you can create a layer underneath your current map. Make the new layer a solid shade of grey using a bucket tool. If you do this, you'll have to do the flattening thing I mentioned before.

I did all of those things, but it still crashes my game! The file is PNG and has no transparent spots, and being a PNG file it has no layers. I really don't know what is wrong and I'm starting to worry

Could you send me the file? I can look over it for you. Just pm it to me if you don't want it public~

It may help to share what program you're using, since some can't save a grayscale-mode image from what I've heard (though it be in shades of gray, it may not be grayscale mode). That was what crashed my game when I first tried to use Map Maker... I was using Paint, which can create the terrain in every other way but not in grayscale mode. Now I use GIMP for my map terrains... at least in editing them. :)

If all else fails, the problem could be the file itself. It could be corrupted... this happened with one of my own heightmaps, which I have yet to recreate. The only way to fix a corrupted file is the remake the thing in its entirety in a fresh file.

Hope this helps. :)

Oh, so so so many thanks to everyone who helped! Although, now my terrain mask is pure black when I try to use it. I'm sorry for bothering everyone.

No need to be sorry! We're all here to help ya~

To be clear, when you say terrian mask, you're reffering to the red green and blue colored picture that determines what the ground texture is, right?

In that case:
-Is the file the correct size?
-Is it in RGB mode
-Are you changing the terrain types? (The default is this black texture, so you simply have to change it to the desired type.
-Are you positive your typing the file in correctly?
