Title: How do you make your characters?
Post by: FamousLastWords on July 03, 2015, 06:46:02 pm
how do you make your characters? do you plan them out, base them off book/show/movie characters, actors, celebs, etc., or do you just go for it? also, what type of characters do you usually make? realistic, robotic, humanoid, creepypasta, etc?

please don't hesitate to take this down if it has already been asked. i'm quite new to this place.

I make none realistic, I may have some inspired off real life things but that's just me. I'm thinking on making a Peridot character from Steven Universe and my gemsona, but I'm too lazy. But rarely any humanoids rather than gems.

EDIT: Forgot to say how. I make my characters first by listening to a song, then it think of the mood of the song and then just make the song sound like it fits a scenario. Then I imagine a scene with a random character, that's how they begin. Then I imagine their look and personality, how they would react to their surroundings and such. It usually takes weeks of imagining over and over again in order to construct one character.

I usually just think of a particular trait I want them to have and then design the character from there. Or I base them off of completely random things (you'd be surprised how much the Sims 3 effects my characters XD Also I based two of my characters off of LEGO minifigures...). Other times I just head into character creator and pick random options I don't normally use to create a character.

I usually make realistic or semi-realistic animal characters.

Most of my characters are carefully planned out, based on books, or based on movies, with the exception of a few. Sometimes I'll combine the three and see what comes out of it. I usually go for realistic or semi-realistic when it comes to creating characters.

What I typically do, is pick a specific species, and a color palette. There are websites that show good color combos, or you can just look up the color wheel, and pick a combo from there. While I'm making my characters, I usually think of their backstory, and how I plan to use them. When I make fursonas I take the time to fit characteristics that I like into it. My most current ones are Voltage (because of my love of Mountain Dew) and October (because of my love of Halloween). When it comes to character design, there are many things that come into play. Here is a really good character design walkthrough (it's more of tips) that can help when creating unique designs!

Inspiration can really come from anywhere. Just look around you, and you'll find something that will inspire designs.

Each and everyone has their own unique way of making characters, and I too like to see how everyone gets their inspiration.

I tend to make characters at random, although I usually delete those ones after about an hour. The characters who I do keep come from an idea or concept I wanted to create - be it a cyborg dog or a specific coloration of a breed I wanted to replicate.

What it really comes down to for me is the character, not the design. Sometimes I use random generators to get some basic character traits and work with those, but I usually have a concept in mind already.

I try and replicate dog breeds a lot, although I end up making a preset in the end like 90% of the time because the markings aren't juuuust perfect.

I normaly see a wolf who's colors or markings a love and go to make one based off that wolf or lion. I never end up making what I set off to make though, and they always turn out 100% diffrent. I was useing a tan and hot pink color pattern, I ended up with a grey and light grey pup. Some of my favorite charictors are based of of OCs or in the case of Scone, my most used char, it started out as bordom.

I usually only make realistic characters but sometimes I just throw together a unrealistic char if I know Im not serious about rping with it. My realistic chars usually start off with me finding an animal I think is interesting/would be fun to try to make and then...lots of research on the coloring/species/behavior. I then get to struggle with creating the right colors(usually grey until I figured out that the angel wings default color is perfect to copy '-.-). Of course, once I finally finish it there are no others of its species so you just see a random saber toothed tiger wandering around fp.

You know, I hate it when that happens. I spend like a half hour making this super realistic char, and then I can't find any groups to RP them in. It really is annoying.

I prefer to make 'Semi-Realistic' characters, neon colours and pure simple colours aren't my things. I love to add some odd markings and items and some 'Dark Neon' colours.

I guess my characters just come to me, I do not base them of anything other than my imagination. I wouldn't call myself 'Creative' since I am not! But two/three (No idea o.o) years of creating characters, I learned.

I'd say that I am quite proud of my creations, they aren't just those common 'Black' pelt wolves with some subtle white colours. I like to keep a range of 'Realistic' (- Semi Realistic, maybe?) colours on my wolf. For example, Chestnut, Cream, Light Grey,  brown ect..

I typically google pictures of what I'm trying to create, like a feline for example, and try my best to match the colors and design of the coat to my character. I usually end up failing but at least have something to go off of. xD
Other times when I'm feeling motivational I'll just get to it and play with colors and designs.

For my characters, I try to base them upon creativeness and imaginations! technically, I usually keep them sort of realistic in a way by colors of the fur and markings and how the markings are placed. otherwise, I screw around and create something out of the blue and just roll with it. o/

I don't really plan or watch anything to have the inspiration to create a new character.

It just comes to me I guess..

Most of my characters are really small and have similar body types but different marking and colour schemes.

Without telling the complete look of my characters (Incase of Copiers) I'll just list the basics.

They're Usally canines, and the name is the hardest. Most FH players have unique names and are very appealing. (Like: Athena, Greek Godess)

ALL of my charas have pointy ears, full tuft and short thin body. Very petit if you'd ask c:

My characters are Semi-Realistic, without the use of extreme saturation. I only use dark (Neon) colours to disguise the Un-realistic part of my characters. They also involve a lot of white/chestnut brown/grey.

As I said, I don't really have any inspiration of anything, it just comes to me. And since my characters are fairly same I just use my old ones as templates. For some reason I never tend to have a favourite due to my constant habit of making new characters just for the heck of it.

I get inspired by movies, but add some extra traits to them let it be they are crabby or they are just way to witty all the time. Otherwise, I like to play around with new things.

When I make my characters, I usually think of a TV Show or an important character in a Book. Usually I create wolf/Canine avatars. One of my favorites was a male char named Kinoto. So when your trying to make a char, Be creative and keep it Unique!

Usually I think of stuff that I haven't made yet and I JUST DO IT. But I do have one that I got insipration from. Maxwell, he was based off of Claude from Black Butler :3 For Thyme, the only thing I had going for her when I made her was the voice, which was from Bleach but Idk anymore. Duke I made because of my Southern side and I LOVE herbavours. And ya know what, Duke is a Heerse. A horse-deer. And I Googled them and I could not find more than three. Like...I would have thought that horse-deers would be more popular...Grog I made after I had watched How To Train Your Dragon 2 and realized I don't have a dragon char. As for Bahari, well I love dinos so I just did my fav. So I have Thyme (my fursona) the cat demon, Maxwell the mythical dire wolf, Duke the horse-caribou mix, Grog the dragon, and Bahari the Hydrotheosaurs.

I don't usually plan my characters, since my inspiration is always somewhere far away. But if I want to do a new character, I just go for it. As for what type they usually are, I aim for dark creatures. You know, a lot of red, black and white C:

I think about an overall vibe or theme I'd like the character to have, and go from there. It takes a long time and a lot of color tweaking before I come to a finished product and even then sometimes I might redsign my character.

I normally take a few basic personality traits and work with those. I add some and take some away as I go; my character development occurs through role-play. I keep track in my character's bio, and my characters are always realistic. I have a few unrealistic ones, but I don't rp with those because they're not in groups, so they are kind of just white noise.

When it comes to making characters, I guess I plan out an idea in my head what I want them to look like. I also plan out a personality to help match up with that character. They always range from small to big in size, and I have a huge liking for big, sharp ears. So all of my characters ears are as big as you can make them on the slider, haha.
When it comes to realism, most of my characters are on the more realistic side, with the exception of unnatural mane colours and sometimes markings. But overall, it does take me a while to make a character, considering I am somewhat a perfectionist regarding creating things.

When i make characters i usually base their personality and looks off of what i am enjoying at that moment. If i make a character while listening to a certain song i will probably base their colors around the theme of the song and their personality off of what the songs meaning is. If its a tv show or book ill often mix a bunch of characters together and make the character based off that.

I usually just mess around with the color table, character features, markings, and items. Then I take forever with a name. I usually have dark-looking characters but with a good natured personality or have short emo/scene like characters (just depends on my thought while I'm making one. Could be just a random thought out of the blue and I try to make a character on it.)

I usually base my characters off of certain movies, books, etc personality-wise. I guess I just kind of wing the design and hope it looks good? Which I think they usually do. I go for more semi-realistic designs, though sometimes I'll  have some unrealistic characters in the mix as well.

I just want to mention something before I talk about how I make my characters... When you guys say realistic, do you mean their aesthetics, characteristics, or personality? I personally don't like to say that my characters are realistic or unrealistic. There's just too much to consider that could make a character both of those things. Now, what I like to consider my characters to be is fantasy, due to the realm that they live in. They are both realistic and unrealistic to me because 1) they are unrealistic due to the fact it's fantasy, but 2) they're also realistic since they follow the laws of the realm they're from (like laws of nature and whatnot) and their personality and characteristics are believable. If you think about it, your "realistic" animal characters are still unrealistic because they're humanized, if you are comparing them to real animals. Now, don't take this as me being rude or anything, I'm just trying to point something out. I don't really understand why anyone claims that their chatacers are realistic or unrealistic.

Okay. Onto how I make my characters. Just a side note, this is how I design characters in general, not just for this game. Most of my characters are human, btw. And I'm more of a novel writer than a roleplayer.

I actually grew up designing new characters day after day. I have so many that it's not even funny. I don't know where the inspiration came from to make all of them. Back then about 10 years ago, I mostly just had a vague image of what they looked like in my head, drew them, and then based their personality and characteristics off of the vibe that they game me. After that I would make relationship ties between them and my other characters.

Sometimes, however, I created characters specifically to fill roles that I needed in my stories. Such as the antagonist, specific people to get the story rolling in the direction I needed it to, and etc. I didn't go too deep into this other process back then until I really started to get a hold of the plotlines. Their personalities had to follow their roles enough to make the choices that I wanted, but the fun part is figuring out WHY they make those choices. Why are they like that? Why did they choose that?

I have a thing for back stories. All my characters have one that back up their mind set. A large portion of their personality, however, is free reign for uniqueness. Multiple characters who go through the same back story will act differently. Personality + backstory = a unique character. Because of that formula, it is quite difficult when you're trying to design a character to fit a specific role that is a key to the plot without any plot holes showing up. So, sometimes I allow the plot to change or evolve around the characters to avoid holes, as long as it doesn't change the main idea that I'm trying to achive in my story.

It's a very tedious process, to be honest. I have been developing specific characters for over 10 years now, trying to refine them to their best potential. I think about a lot of things when trying to refine them. Not only do you have to think about who you want them to be when the story begins, you have to think about who they will become by the end. Character developement throughout the story is one of the keys to keep it interesting among readers, and also increases the readers' ability to relate to the characters (although a huge chuck of a character being relatable comes with the personality + characteristics + backstory equation, which needs to be balanced enough to be believable because a believable character is also a relatable character).

Anyway. When I create characters based on roles like this, I end up designing their personality and characteristics first, then their aesthetics based on those two things, and finally their backstory to connect the role and personality. I may also change their aesthetics a little after I figure out their back story, like maybe I decided they got into some terrible accident in their past and have scars from it. Their aesthetics may also change as the story goes from certain events, which is always fun. Some of the many things I do to or give my characters as the story goes that changes the way they look are cuts, burns, loss of limbs, curses, and etc. I'm so brutal... But it has to be done. Because I said so. I know, I'm terrible. Or I'll just throw in the excuse that nobody would know paradise without knowing hell first. Heh.

Hmm... I'm wondering if my post might be a little confusing. Maybe I should conclude by saying that my characters are not set in stone and stay the same as the story plays. I design them with a timeline and change them as it goes on. I like to consider character designing an art because of how complicated it can get. To be honest, I think designing characters and their back stories is the best part of creating a story. I mean, what is a story without characters? Their design is essencial.
