Title: difference between a character and a fursona?
Post by: papayatoot on November 29, 2015, 05:16:13 pm
Title says it all. Are they the same thing? If not, what's the difference?

A fursona is usually a character that represents you as a person. So basically, a persona (but furrier). A character can just be a random character that has no personal meaning, whether it's a character for a RP or just a random one you've created out of boredom x)

I think the term "fursona" was mostly coined by furries who wanted an anthropomorphic persona but wanted to make it unique. Someone with a fursona if not always, most often identifies as a furry.

To be honest, fursona for me is something that represents you as an animal.
A character can be something random, I have a lion character because I've wanted to play as a lion sometimes in-game.
But a fursona is something much more than just a character for me.
My fursona is Autumn and it represents me in eyes of the wolf.

ohhhhh I see. I think I accidentally made my very first characters (the ones in my profile pic) very close to who I am in some aspects, so, combined, those two wolves are my fursona. I guess. lol (cues the lock)

Personally for me a frusta is what you would look like as an animal. It doesn't have to be a furry like my frusta, Siri for instance is just how i would most likely look as an animal, its shares everything from my personality to my looks. Thats why i mainly use her as a hangout character

A fursona is a term for a persona that is an animal character. It's pretty much a character that represents what the creator would be as an animal. Fursonas are often cartoon-driven, thus making them anthropomorphic. The term fursona was originally created in association with the furry fandom but now it's used outside of the fandom more.

A character is an illusion of a living being that is created in the mind of an artist, often having a personality made up by them (ex: Harry Potter). A character that is too relatable to an artist is not a well-made character. That would be a persona.

Well, this was something new for me as well. Someone said fursonas were like your main characters or something.

I've always seen a fursona as the animal character you have that you identify as. For instance, in the world of Feralheart, I go by Edol, the German shepherd, or Tooth the lion. In short, yis, I guess you could say a fursona is sort of your 'main' charrie/charries, while a character is 'an illusion of a living being which is created in the mind of an artist', as was so brilliantly explained by Jenga <3

Though it has been pretty well summed up by others already, a fursona is basically an animal persona (or alter ego) that people use to represent themself. This is a very popular term in the furry fandom especially. For those who do not wish to regard their floofs with this terminology, "Main characters" are simply characters that you use often and/or are best known by/for.

To me the difference between a character and a fursona is the fact that a fursona is either a type of animal that represents you or an animal that is most like you. My fursona for example is my Kreptis character named BlackBerry. I created him back in 2011 where he first started out as any other OC/Character does. Then I added parts of my humor and behavior into him to make him more unique. Now if he was a real person and not just a make believe character that I have created,  we would both view things exactly the same and express opinions the same. I do have to disagree however, that everyone who has a fursona is a 'furry'. I'm not saying that I don't see the creativity and dedication being put into a fursuit, it's just not my cup of tea. I have no interest in dressing up as an animal or viewing any of my characters on two legs with clothing walking around in a human environment. My characters are just animal storybook characters that I created and have meaning to me. Think of it this way, my fursona is me but I am not my fursona. I know doesn't really make any since but I am a human. I don't see myself as an animal. BlackBerry is a personally detailed character to be like me. He's my mascot. I just have no desire to be him. But the character BlackBerry himself is me.
