My idea for the chat is to have a limit for how many posts are remembered by the game. Limiting how many posts you can scroll through would allow everyone to actually scroll through everything without several posts at a time not being seen due to the overload of just how many there are.
I just ran into this issue earlier today while roleplaying- a few different people posted at the same time, long posts, and it was incredibly difficult to see what the first one said, due to it being skipped to one from before that. Not only are entire posts skipped once the game has been open for a while with posts continuing to come in, but a sentence or two within a single post ends up being incapable of being seen until more people post, moving that specific one into just the right position to actually see all of it.
If you want to have the game remember absolutely everything said, then limit the amount of posts the current chat window can have on it, adding a "see older chats" option at the top that can open a new window that shows everything that has been said.
Or, if the amount of posts isn't the issue, possibly edit the scrollbar to be easier to use. For example, like the one this forum and typically all of the internet uses - it gets smaller as there is more to see, and slides fluidly instead of in the a block-like fashion that the game currently has.

Wow, I really like this idea. I've often had trouble scrolling through the chat when I've been online for a long period of time, which can make RPing difficult if I miss someone's post or go AFK and have to scroll up to read it. I'd love this!
-
This would be a lovely touch to add onto the game, especially given the optional 'show older posts' bit. I like that a lot. Seeing something like this put in would be neat!
-
I really like the idea myself, even though if I ever rp I usually do it in another chat so it's a different color than the normal local white and it stands out more.

Sometimes a suggestion for "saving" the posts that you've missed is to scroll up and screenshot it quickly so the incoming posts won't constantly make you look back to the very bottom of the chat box. I've always done so to keep up if I ever roleplay (which isn't often), yet I agree with the idea that the scrolling bar on the chat box should be edited in some way to be "easier" to use.
Thanks for sharing your ideas, floof!

Absolutely love this idea.
-
This would be an awesome idea! I can't tell you how many times i've struggled through miles and miles of chat to look at what's been said in local.
-
I support this idea. It makes life more easier. :D
-
This is a great idea for people chatting or roleplaying in local chat. However, the problem you put to the table can be solved by roleplaying in group or party chat and muting local.
I believe muting a chat will make it disappear instantly in the chatbox also, so reading roleplay posts in group chat after you come back after being AFK can be easier. Correct me if I'm wrong.
-
I think this is a good idea, since chat sometimes moves faster than people on black friday. I support it :D
-
Yes, I've ran into this problem a few times as well. And I haven't been in-game a lot (yet). If the scrolling could be changed a bit or if the size of the chat box could be decreased that'd help a lot.
-
You already can change the size of the chatbox.
-
I have had many problems with this myself expecially when you are trying to have a conversation with someone and chat is being spamed, brilliant Idea!

I believe they mean how many chats are remembered as right now it remembers what every one says making it difficult to find something someone has said before it has passed the chat box if that makes sense.

Yes, exactly this. Sorry for the choice of words, I sometimes have trouble choosing the right words. Then it makes sense to me, but it's interpret differently by most others.

Yeah, the idea is to limit the total amount of posts the chat can show. Even if you can block out channels you don't want to see, the insane amount of posts that can be there is, well, insane. If you're using only Group chat, you still have trouble finding the messages when there are too many. Same with Local, and Party. All of them. Separating the channels isn't the problem, the chat keeping every last post is.

Added another small suggestion on how to change the chat. Let's face it, the chat kinda needs both of these ideas, so let's get this looked at.

As for your most recent suggestion, I thought the background of the chat was already partially transparent? It could also depend on what UI mod you are using, if that is something you are using. That or you could be missing a texture that is the background of the chat box.

Regarding your last edit your chat box should look like this if you haven't changed it.

(As well as Morgra's post)
That is very strange... Since the first day I joined and downloaded the game, which was in March, the chat's been 100% transparent. Was/Is something missing in the download?
-
I've actually had the same issue with Xenek.
Ever since I've downloaded FeralHeart the chat box has been transparent, until I due an interface mod, I'm not sure what causes this but it doesn't really effect me that much.

Could be yeah....That's what i'm guessing. That or it's some type of glitch. Have you ever done a reinstall since March by chance?

I never even thought to do a reinstall. It took a week to find the legendary markings and download them, now I don't remember where they were- reinstalling, if I'm guessing correctly, would mean losing those, which I would very much like to not happen.
This said, however, should I remove that edited-in suggestion and post something about it in the help board?

Yes, that would mean that you would have to reinstall Legendary markings and items and other modifications you may have. However, this might be the solution to your issue.
You can remove the suggestion if you'd like if you think it would confuse others. And I wouldn't make a Game Help thread until you've found that a reinstall doesn't solve the problem, but yes, further questions and answers should be addressed on that board.

To prevent me from being bumped down to the bottom of the chat box, I just hold on to the scroll bar on the chat box as I read and if I have to quickly read the post below/find a great then I screenshot the post I was looking for. As for the problem with finding the post, making the chat box taller seems to help a bit. But I have ran into the problem where I had to carefully scan the chat for just one post after I had been afk for a quite some time, even when I used those two techniques of searching the chat.
And in my opinion, I'm not quite sure about the change, being a compulsive screenshotter who screenshots every interesting message in the chat. The posts disappearing at the top of the chat window could mean that if I go afk for too long then I could miss some interesting posts in the chat(I sometimes go afk for hours).
Others could have a problem where they forget and/or miss a rp post that explained a change in the rules and so they end up telling off those who follow the new rules that were described in that missed post.

That wouldn't be an issue, if the secondary idea came into play as well. If you read the full post, you would know that the idea of having the older, "deleted" messages available to see in the way of "see older chats" was also stated. Though, "view older messages" sounds better, now that I think about it... Still, the point remains. The messages would not be lost forever if you go afk, as long as they implement that as well as make the chat easier on those of us who do not afk for hours as a time.

i think this is a really great idea and would be pretty beneficial in-game
-
I think FH should add this. Would be useful to use for the local chat.

Would this idea require access to the source code?

I've been trying to think of a way of faking it without the code but i lack the computer skills. Kind of like how the direct X ENB mod things do their thing.
