Title: Game just won't start at all
Post by: raemoend on April 06, 2017, 06:32:12 am
Hello! I just happened to catch registration open, made an account, and installed the game (Torrent). However, it won't start at all for me. It's not my performance, as I have a pretty beefy computer which can handle pretty much anything. It goes to the OGRE setup page thing (more in the photos) and once I click "OK" it just stops working right away. It doesn't even start up. Here's some pictures on my Twitter https://twitter.com/jelly_beantrash/status/849872168938811393 . What can I do? (Edit: OpenGL is also the only option.)

Have you tried changing your rendering subsystem? You can do that in that little pop up window that you had as one of your pics on Twitter. There is OpenGL and Direct3D9

OpenGL is the only option....

Looks like you need to edit your ogre.cfg file. Open the ogre.cfg file under C:\FeralHeart with the program called Notepad if you are in Windows. You should get something that looks like this:

What you do is make the ogre.cfg file look like that except with a change of rendering subsystem. So, right next to the "Render System=" at the top, you would put "Direct3D9 Rendering Subsystem"

Make sure you save and then exit the cfg file!

It won't let me save the file unless I change the name. Is that safe?

It should just give you an option to "Save" without changing the file name, hmm. Try exiting out of the file and try it again and see if it gives you just the option to save. If it saved as a name other than "ogre.cfg" it will not work and your game will most likely break.

Try opening the file up as an administrator. all you need to do is right click the ogre.cfg file in your FeralHeart folder and select "Run as Administrator"

Should look something like this:

I don't have the option. But after editing it on notepad it's a notepad file, is that normal?

And yes, this is the only profile on this PC.

Oh wait, nevermind, the option for Run as Administrator isn't available for the filetype. My bad. Well, are you still not able to save the file at all?

The file should be able to remain a .cfg file that opens with the Notepad program, yes. If it still shows .cfg as the file type, then that is fine. For example, my .cfg files changed to a notepad icon but they are still a .cfg file. As long as you didn't save it to a .txt file you should be good to go! That is, if it does end up saving.

It still won't save at all. Are there any other solutions?

If you crash right on startup, there isn't a solution as that's the only way to access the render subsystem change from outside the ingame options. Instead of opening the file up as an administrator, try opening up the Notepad program as an administrator. I think that might do the trick with the "Access is denied" message. So,

1. Find the Notepad program on your computer
2. Right click the Notepad program and select "Run as administrator"
3. Go to File>Open and navigate to your FeralHeart folder
4. In the bottom right of that window make sure where it says "Text Documents (*.txt)" it says "All Files" instead
5. After "All Files" is selected, make sure you find the ogre.cfg again
6. Rename the rendering subsystem
7. Try to save and see if it works

It worked but the game still stops working right when I hit OK. Turns out that's not the problem.

Shouldn't be a hardware issue or any ingame modifications that did this since you just installed it so i'm guessing there was a fault or some type of undetected installation error when the game installed. Sometimes this may happen. I'd recommend you do a complete and clean reinstall of the game. It may in your best interest to even redownload the installer but this isn't always a must. You can try the torrent one again and I do recommend that download option as it is the fastest. However, if you'd like another alternative, here is a >MediaFire download< (http://www.mediafire.com/file/7b69j3pe2u6d9x0/FHsetup1.15.exe) for ya to get the installer from.

Also, what I mean by complete reinstall, make sure you uninstall the game through the "Change or Remove a Program" menu on Windows and then once that is complete, make sure the desktop icon is deleted and the C:\FeralHeart folder deleted as well. Then, go ahead and install the game once again.

--------------
Edit: I know I've already been saying this for the Notepad program, but have you tried running FeralHeart.exe as an administrator yet?

Deleted it and reinstalled it twice, same issue.

Oh my god! The thing about running as administrator worked! Thank you so much! I apologize for taking time out of your day <3

No need to apologize ^^ We're always here to help on the help boards! I'm glad you found the solution <3

It could have something to do with your firewall/antivirus software as well so if you know how you can always whitelist the .exe file in both Windows Firewall and your antivirus software but if it isn't a bother to you to Run as Administrator, then that might just be the easier option.

As for Running as Administrator, you can set this to automatically select for the program, rather than having to click it each time if you'd like. All you have to do is right click the shortcut on your desktop or the FeralHeart.exe file in your FeralHeart folder and select Properties. After you select Properties, make sure you click on Advanced then check Run as Administrator then click Ok, then Ok again and the dialog should exit.

Locking this up since the problem was solved!
