Title: Feral Heart keeps crashing

I began to play on feral heart a few days ago, not expecting anything unusual. The black screen before the two loading pictures came up, and before they even came up, the sign 'FeralHeart.exe has stopped working' appeared. I have seen this sign before and simply just restarted and it never came up again, so I did the same here. But surprisingly it came up again a second time, and even a third time. I can see it is just going to keep doing this. It has been like that for around over a week now, and I'm starting to get concerned as I have heard you may have to 'reinstall' feral heart. For a start I don't even see how to reinstall FH, but what worries me even more is the fact I may lose all my data like my characters, maps, and everything that I ever made in this game including friends. If you do have to reinstall this game, is there any way I can keep all my data? Or will it just keep everything and not reset the game? Please can someone help? Dx

Not to worry dear floof, you won't be losing anything when uninstalling and then reinstalling the game (make sure you're downloading the new updated version). Your characters and the friends in your friends list will be safe and won't be removed c: Maps-wise, the default maps have been removed and replaced in the new update; and the ones you've downloaded you will have to put into the game manually once more, and if you need help with that I don't mind doing some research for/with you to find the maps you've downloaded.

Do you have duplicate particles in your Particles folder?

Duplicate particle files have _0 or _1 at the end of their name, delete all the duplicate particles.

Oh thank goodness for that ^^ I've never reinstalled anything before, so I do not have a clue how to uninstall and reinstall FH. I'm not very good with that stuff. So if you could tell me how to that would be great. Thanks!

Sure thing!

1) Go to C:/ > FeralHeart and look for this application, it should be called 'unins000' and should be an application file. Click on it and allow your computer to completely remove all of the contents of FeralHeart from the folder. NOTE: If you have any mods, maps, presets, etc. that you'd like to keep before uninstallation, make sure you've saved all of that first and have stored them where you can easily access them and put into FeralHeart after reinstallation

2) Now that FeralHeart has been removed, you can then get on with the reinstallation. Simply go to the // Feral-Heart Game Update June 2016 // (https://feral-heart.com/smf/index.php?topic=56609.0) and follow the download links provided. Make sure you read through the post made by Redlinelies so you understand which link to follow to install. The recommendation is that you go with the Torrent Setup, and if you don't know how to do that, feel free to visit LordSuragaha's How to download, install, & play FH using the FH1.15 Torrent (https://feral-heart.com/smf/index.php?topic=56712.0) tutorial.

3) Now that your setup is complete and you've installed the new FeralHeart, go to the User Panel (https://feral-heart.com/index.php?option=com_wrapper&view=wrapper&Itemid=55) and log into your account. You should find a section of the page looking like this:

Click on 'Reset Home for all of your characters, and then 'Go Home' for all of your characters. NOTE: If you've already had the FeralHeart 1.15 Update installed (before reinstallation), then you do not have to do this step. This is only here if you're moving into the new game update.

5) Just double check that you don't have any duplicate particle files by going to C:/ > FeralHeart > media > particles and deleting any _0, _1, _2 etc particle files. When you open up FeralHeart, open it twice (two game windows) and check which rendering system you're trying to open FeralHeart with on the second game window, and if it's OpenGL then perhaps try changing it to Direct3D9.

Sorry, I always have this problem, but I can't see any feral heart folder that has unins000, or anything, it just starts up the game if I select it which, like I said, won't work :/ Is there anywhere in particular that I have to go to find this folder?

Wolfgirl2006, the unins000 should be located in the main directory of the game and it should be at the bottom.
An easier way to find the unins000 application is to go to the main directory of the game, just click on any fail (not double-click!) and then press the "U" key on your keyboard. It should move itself to the bottom of the main folder and you should be able to find the application.

I followed the steps, and I have successfully downloaded feral heart, but it is still saying 'FeralHeart.exe has stopped working' DX.... I was not expecting this.....:'( is there anything else I can do, or have I lost my favourite game forever? :"(

Having the same issue- I thought it was just my computer since this happened last year.
Kinda glad it's not just me this time though! I uninstalled everything as well and FH crashes just after the black code window pops up.
I heard the server is going to be reset soon though?
In other news I can enter the old versions of FH and FH+ just fine, it seems that just the new version is having trouble

So, Is that it then? Have I lost it forever? Or is there anything else I could do? If there is anything else please tell me because I have already been off feral heart for way too long (1 month) Dx.... I srsly miss it...

I've been off Feralheart for 2 years before I came back. :\

You should try changing the Rendering Subsystem.

Also update your video card drivers.

I have opened feral heart with both rendering subsystems and it still won't work either way. I have no idea what to try next. Now I just want to know how this happened. Before it started to crash repeatedly, I saw no signs of problems or anything weird happening to the game. So I am so confused as to how this occurred in the first place. Is there anything else I can do or is there something else in the rendering subsystem I need to change?

I think maybe an alteration of your Video Mode (resolution of the FeralHeart window) could possibly help with the crashing. That or we could see if you still are experiencing the crashing issue after the resize. You will need to shrink the window size. Here is how to do that:

How to change the size of your UI: Go to C:\FeralHeart\ogre.cfg and open the ogre.cfg file in Notepad. You should get something that looks like this:

What you will need to do is, under the [OpenGL Rendering Subsystem] and the [Direct3D9 Rendering Subsystem] sections where it states "Video Mode= (width resolution value) x (height resolution value)", change those numbers to a lower value. I would recommend trying 800 x 600 to start out with, or even smaller if you think that would help for testing purposes since I believe the default value upon fresh install is 800 x 600. Once you are finished typing in the Video Mode values on both Rendering Subsystems, save the file and run the game.

If the issue still persists, it is likely a problem with hardware. Before we look for possible hardware solutions, I would recommend doing a complete reinstall of the game again, as this is a common solution to crashing issues. But when you try it again, make sure to delete your FeralHeart folder completely to make sure there aren't any residual files left over from the old installation incase they could be corrupted somehow and causing the crashing.

800 x 600 is what the default size of the screen is set as. I have tried it with both OpenGL and Direct3D9, and it still wont work. Is there anything else I can try changing?

- Try changing your width resolution value and your height resolution value to a lower value than 800 x 600. Try with 640 x 480.
- Try running FeralHeart as administrator. You can do this by right-clicking on your FeralHeart shortcut on your Dekstop.
- Check again for double particles. Right click on the FH shortcut/icon on your dekstop and then click "Open File Location". Go to the folder named "media" and then to the folder named "particles". If you see any file ending with _0, _1, _2 or _3 - make sure to delete it.
- Make sure to have DirectX installed. If you don't have it (there's a chance you already have it), download it from here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35 (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35)

To Uninstall feralheart open the Control Panel on your computer. (This differs from the pc version) Ex: Windows 7 Windows 10. Now there should be a section that says Programs and right under it says "Uninstall a program" and click on that. Now search up Feralheart on the search bar and it should pop up. Now hover your mouse over Feralheart version 1.15 and right click. Then click Uninstall and proceed with uninstallation.

I have tried changing all the rendering system options, all the sizes of the screen resolutions, but I'm still having the same issue over and over again. I try going into the game almost everyday now. It is starting to look hopeless 😩. I have tried looking for particle folders and have spotted a few with numbers- but not at the ending of the word. Do I need to delete these? (Sorry for not replying for so long)

Vespian wants to say, "Yes," but I could be mistaken. Me's looked into my own particles folder and me sees no numbered files so, quite possibly, yes. It won't hurt to try but be sure to save copies over in a separate folder outside of the FH folder as a precautionary measure.

I also want to point out that there was some discussion in this thread earlier about reinstalling but I wasn't sure if that ever actually took place? If the particle deletion doesn't work, I would recommend a full uninstall, redownload and reinstall of the game.

I did try reinstalling FH, twice in fact. But it didn't work. Is there a difference between an uninstall and a full uninstall? If so what do I need to do that's different from last time? I will check the particles again and see about saving them in a new folder. Thanks anyway.

Try renaming your current FeralHeart folder to something similar to "FeralHeartBackup" so that you don't lose your work.
Then get a fresh new installation of the game and, without using any parts or mods from your backup, try playing the game.

Uhhh, guys? The issue most likely has to due with the game not loading it's drivers/file extension DLL's or another essential correctly on their computer. Deleting duplicate particle files will not help if you crash after the black box window. It's only necessary if you crash while trying to enter a map. They also tried reinstalling multiple times. :/
I don't think you told us what type of computer you use. It might also be helpful to list your specs. (memory, disk space, RAM)

Yes! Finally! I have created a new file for the particles and FH is FINALLY WORKING!! Thank you all so much for all your amazing help... I am so happy ^^ The problem is finally solved!!

Not true, mine crashes at black box stage when the particles duplicate.
