I use GIMP, have made tons of terrains before on old laptops, the mask works, have tried both 512x512 and 513x513, tested with simple height maps that don't use downloaded brushes, tried putting Terrain at the end, made sure it's greyscale, it's PNG, resaving, restarted my computer, but it's still crashing? This is the first time I've tried making a map on this laptop, but I've made a lot of them on previous laptops.

Have your tried flattening your image? Look here (https://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-image-flatten.html) for the Gimp command to flatten your image.
decided I'd also provide it here since it's pretty straight-forward ^^
Command: Go to Image > Flatten Image

Yep, it's all one layer, but I could try flattening it anyways.
Nope, didn't work. Still crashing.

You can try using & modifying (copy and paste your heightmap into it) this:
http://www.mediafire.com/view/ausqlcih5y3qd3v/TestHeightmap.jpg
It's just a flat, standard heightmap for getting started... it has everything set up already.
You'll have to put it somewhere fh can find it though.
Also: You can change the .jpg to .png by using "file > save as" if you want to keep using .png, which makes the map smoother. =)

Ah, seems to be working! Thank you!
