As for what you better described, you will need to erase the areas that are supposed to be transparent on the mane texture in order for the texture to not overlap the mane itself. Once you've done that, set the texture layer from 'normal' to 'multiply'.

I'm sorry about the broken link. It's fixed now
To fix this, it's best to erase around the edges/points of the mane mask. Just by a few pixels. This will get rid of those white lines.
