Title: WOLF for DOSbox/PC?
Post by: taryn673 on June 16, 2011, 02:06:34 pm
Anyone here ever play the 1994 game,WOLF?

In case you don't know what wolf is...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolf_(video_game) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolf_(video_game))
since i'm too lazy to actually tell what it's about x3

I played Wolf a ton when i was waiting for FH,and I still play it.

I love that game! Espcially when you have pups but the graphics arent great but hey thats 1994 for you XD. Lion was also pretty cool cos u could kill hunters of nasi that entered your den. As with wolf if a hunter went to your denhole anyone guarding the pups would be dead.
I also know some cheats if you want me to explain them.

I have considered downbloading these and such, but i have no clue if I should. How did you guys get it? I'm sure you just can't go out and buy this stuff am i right? Because it does look interesting, I've been wondering how I should get it for a while.

You should, it's work the play. However, since it is a DOS game, controls are a little difficult, but it's not too bad to learn them with Wolf.
You should also look at Lion, which I love too, but it has horrendous (we're talking 10 minute) loading screens.. it can be fixed by turning the frame rate waaay up in DOSBox though. Still, Wolf is easier if you're just learning with DOSBox. (Also, the link to the version I have has no sound - because Lion is really big to download as it is at 27 mb/28,164 kb. OUCH. That's alot when your downloading directly from a server and not by torrent.)

DOSBox can be downloaded here from their website. (http://www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1)
WOLF can be downloaded here from Abandonia. (http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/531/Wolf.html)
LION can be downloaded here, again, from Abandonia. (http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/1020/Lion.html)

Just for anyone else who sees it and has no idea of where to get any of them, or if you don't want to look for a legit downloaded to Wolf. xD
If there was a way to have spoiler tags on this forum, I'd put a walkthrough on how to run wolf in it.. but, sadly, this forum has no such button (although if asked I will post another reply with it right here). :(

I'm really enjoying Wolf, I've been playing for a few years now, and it's very fun. Hard to get pups though... Well not hard, but you need patience.

I'll try to explain in the best way I can x3
                                  =HOW TO DOWNLOAD WOLF=
1.Create a folder in C: spelled, Wolf
2.Download Wolf from Abandonia.com OR oldgames.sk (I recommend oldgames,downloaded there :) )
3.save/extract all the files to your wolf folder you just made
4.Download DOSbox at dosbox.com :P
5.Start up Dosbox and put in this:

Mount c c:/wolf
C:
wolf

6.Enjoy Wolf!

I type the mount stuff (my C: folder is C:\Wolf\Wolf) and I got it to say it was mounted but then what?
Title: Re: WOLF for DOSbox/PC?
Post by: Kyugima on June 18, 2011, 01:24:45 am
After you've done this, you will be prompted with a Z:\>. Now, just write what you wanted to call your new DOSBox drive, which as I said above, we called C. To navigate to that newly mounted drive just type in:

Z:\>C:

C:\>
Hopefully, you're all set! Now, it's time to run the game. Previously I had mentioned a game called TESTDRIV in my OLDGAMES folder. I now want DOSBox to go to that folder. So type in:

C:\>CD TESTDRIV

C:\TESTDRIV>
That's it! CD stands for "Change Directory", so you've changed the directory to TESTDRIV. You can find instructions on how to use the Change Directory command, in the CD section of the Commands article.

One more step, running the game! Most games have an EXE file in their directory that you can run. However, some might require a BAT file, or COM file (common in demos and really old games). Most of the time, the file is in the root folder. Please consult the documentation of your game for which file is needed to start the game. In the case of Test Drive, it's TDCGA.EXE. So now, I just type this:

C:\TESTDRIV>TDCGA.EXE

(stolen from the Dosbox wiki XD)

Here, I'll put a screenie in case you don't get it (trust me,sometimes dosbox and setting up the games can be oh so confusing O.o )

Btw,when i mean no need to mount,i mean no need to mess with files,or you know what i mean xD

Asdfghjkl, I was gonna post to tell you what to do, I didn't see the second page until I went to reply. xD

Yep, what everyone is saying.
1.) Put the wolf folder onto your C: drive somewhere - doesn't much matter where, as long as you know where the wolf folder is - I recommend just c:/wolf or c:/games/wolf if you plan on getting multiple DOS games.
2.) Open DOSBox and type 'mount c c:/wolf' and hit enter
3.) Type in 'C:' and hit enter
4.) Type in 'wolf' and hit enter

Also, if you play Lion, remember how I said you have to increase the FPS/speed for the loading screens? Like Taryn673's  screenshot shows, Ctrl-F11 and ctrl-F12 are what changes it up or down.  Just increase it until the screen finishes loading, and then you can turn it back down it you want. (It'll show you how high up you went where it says CPU Speed: 3000 cycles, then you have an idea of how high you need it to be for the future.) I think I usually need it up to about 30,000 cycles.

I had a problem where my / key didn't work - you'll have to rebind your hotkeys with the Ctrl-F1 key if this happens. Note: I've noticed this seems to only happen on laptops due to the way the numpad is used on them. This is the same problem that's in FH, except that you can't rebind keys easily in FH. So, if you have that problem with FH, you'll have it with DOSBox, most likely.

Uhm, that's all I can think of that you might need. :P

There is an easier way...

Take the "wolf.exe" file (Or w.exe) and drag it over the "Dosbox" icon and let it go. Then there is no need for endless typing. MUCH faster.
