Object Material Help (expert object makers needed please)
« on: November 15, 2012, 02:56:06 am »
Hi, I was wondering if someone could help show me how to do UV maps of objects so that I can recolor them how I need. I know how to make meshes and convert them. I can also make solid colored objects, but I have no clue how I would go about texturing an object like wearable items or other objects that have a lot more detail.

Assuming you are using blender, there are a few ways to do this.

But first, you'll need to split the area; (to split it, you need to right click the line under "Blender Render")

Click Split Area and then just split it down the middle.

Then, you need to click the little cube on the new side, and switch to UV/Image editor;

A new screen will pop up. It will be blank.

Now, on the object side, switch to Edit Mode;

Select the entire object in edit mode, and then press U on your keyboard.
A bunch of options should pop up;

Usually Smart UV Project is good, but Unwrap works good for cylinder type items and whatnot.
You can also project from view, which just makes a flat image of it depending on your angle.
Now, you can also do UV mapping in sections. For instance, if you had, lets say, a lollipop.
The handle is a cylinder, and the top is a sphere.
You could select the handle, and then press U, and choose Unwrap. Then with the mouse over on the UV side, you can use B to select the vertices and then S to scale it down a bit. Then for the sphere you would select only the sphere, and then probably do a side view, and then use Project From View. Then you would select both the stick and the sphere, so you can see them both on the UV side, and then just select and arrange what you want on the UV side. Be careful to not go over the edges.

Now you can export the object, and the UV will go with it.

Then just design a texture according to the UV and you're gold. c:

Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
This makes it look fairly simple :)

You're welcome, it's no trouble. c:
It is really not too hard. If you know how you want to layout your texture, then it should be fairly easy to assess the UV options and pick the one that would work the best. And if it turns out goofy, just press U and try a different one.
