Differences in drawing Lions, cats & Wolves!
« on: October 13, 2013, 09:15:42 am »
Hello everyone!<3 Whisker Watcher here and I'm going to be showing you so basic techniques in drawing Lions, cats and wolves without them all looking like the same half cat dog thing. Anyway...moving on!

These are in my style of drawing, and they are just some quick, basic drawings/sketches.

First of all. We have the muzzles.

Cat muzzles:

When I draw cat muzzles, they always have that curve. This can make it able to identify if you draw your muzzles curvy.
Take this cat for example:

Can you see how it curves? I also add whiskers to my drawings. I use them only for cats. Because it makes it look more. Cat-ish. But you can use them how ever you want. ;3

Lion muzzles:

I use the same technique in lion muzzles. The main difference is that lions muzzles seem to be slimmer. Whilst cats seem to be rounder.

Lion:

All felines have this 'curve' but they just come in different shapes and sizes.

Wolf muzzles:

Canines usually just have a straight muzzle. Nothing much to it. There can be differences in side between foxes and wolves. But apart from that. All canines muzzles are pretty similar.

Wolf:

As seen in the picture above.

Moving onto the eyes:

This is mainly how I do my eyes for the different species. I'm not too much to do with realism in  these. Like I said it's mainly my style, but I try to base it from realism.

I tend to draw my cat eyes with a narrow slit pupil and a long flick. [To make the eyes look more feminine I add a small flick on the other side.]

Wolf eyes, similar to cats but with a wider pupil and a smaller flick.

Lion eyes, normal flick. Rounded pupils.

Next is the legs:

Not a ton of difference. But still something. As you can see, for the cats legs. I draw them nice and slim with delicate little paws. Not much tufts to it either.

Wolf legs, the paws not much different to the cats but a more distinct paw-line. [Simple drawings. Keep that in mind. :'3]

Lions legs. As you can see, they are much bulkier and stronger then the other two. They also have big paws, to kill and attack prey. [Smack 'em.]

Uh, lets see. [Puts on glasses. Actually I have glasses already on....anyways!]
We have the ears.

Cats ears:

I usually do my cat ears further down, like more flat. If that makes sense. They're not sticking straight upright.

Wolf ears:

This will help me to explain the cat ears more. As you can see, the wolf has his ears upright. Straight in the air. Whilst looking back on the cat. It's more flat.

Lion ears:

It took me ages to get lions ears right when I was younger. ;3; But realising how they actually looked made it a lot easier. In the photo I did male and female, due to the mane. Lions ears are different from cats and wolves as you can see. They are rounded and smaller.

Finally we have the tails:

The differences are pretty clear. Wolves tend to have big, bushy tails. Lions tails are, thin and long. And cats tails are rounded and long. Cats can have bushy tails to. C:

Thank you for reading this post. Hope this helped some of you! <3
Love you all <3

Neat tutorial you posted. I like how you focused on the snouts, too. There are big differences there when you draw the animals. Well done, Whisker. ~
