Game Help / My group and I cannot enter our map
« on: June 05, 2020, 10:11:10 pm »
Not sure if other roleplays are having this issue, but my group can't enter our map which was previously running perfectly fine.  We can enter side maps, but the mainland of the map won't connect to the front server.  Is the game having any sort of server issues, or shrinking down it's capacity somehow?  Anyone else having this issue?

Highway 550 is revamped, with new ranks and an updated map, and ready to return to begin Chapter two of our story, which we want you to be a part of.

Set in a mid-western environment, our roleplay is more unique and engaging than ever!  Our story centers on a stray dog gang known as Los Sabuesos, whom share a territory with the elusive lobo pack of the Howlers.

A full introductory post lay on our site: https://straysofh550.boards.net/thread/4/introduction-started
And you can get a plot introduction here! :  https://straysofh550.boards.net/thread/27/plot-introduction
For a better idea on the pack and to help you get started on your character, check out the ranks! : https://straysofh550.boards.net/thread/8/rankings

Finally, if this all interested you, please hop into our discord at tinyurl.com/joinh550 .  All you need in order to get started is the ability to download a map, read our rulebook, and a realistic dog character (eye color and markings may vary more than what is genetically accurate, to ensure everyone is diverse and unique).

If you still aren't convinced, here's some map screenshots!

Miscellaneous Tutorials / Running FH On Mac Using Wineskin Only
« on: March 21, 2020, 11:35:46 pm »
Making ANOTHER tutorial to try and help people who had to update their macs recently. ):
Hopefully this will help.  While I am quite fluent in mac, I do want to say I haven't updated.  I'll help any mac users in any way I can but I'm not exactly experiencing what you're experiencing.

The good news is, that wineskin and (if you saw my other tutorial) portingkit are actively updated programs, unlike PlayOnMac.  This means that even if these don't work, please know that the developers are bound to update sooner rather than later to help people with this unfortunate update!

1.  Download this (safe) download of wineskin here.  https://github.com/Gcenx/WineskinServer/tree/master/Winery You don't need to get the .txt file, only the wineskinwinery application.  If you are having trouble getting it, get the unarchiver, a free softwater that opens pretty much any download.  https://theunarchiver.com/

2.  If your mac says the software is unidentified, you can undo this by opening system preferences > going to security and privacy > clicking "open anyway" for wineskin.

3.  Now let's get down to business.  Upon opening, before you do anything, click the + sign at the bottom of the installed engines list to install a wine version needed to run feralheart.  You want the latest version of wine, which should be on the list near the bottom as WS11WineCX19.0.1 .  When you hit install, it might come up as "installing wine 5.6" but it's still the same thing.  Unfortunately I lack a screen for this part as I've already done it on my own! Sorry.  It's pretty easy though.

4.  Once WS11WineCX19.0.1 is under your list of "Installed Engines" go ahead and click new blank wrapper and name it whatever your heart desires, allowing wine to create it.  It's okay if it says it failed, mine did too and I still got FH to open!  YOU MUST CLICK VIEW WRAPPER IN FINDER.  If you don't do this it'll be hard to relocate the wrapper on your own since I'm not exactly sure where mac saves it.

5.  You should be brought to your newly created wrapper.  Keep the finder window open as you shouldn't move your wrapper until everythings set up.  Once the wrapper has "opened" click "install softwater" and you'll be prompted to locate the feralheart install file, click locate executable file.

6.  Feralheart should begin installing, looking like a windows window, you shouldn't need to change any settings except maybe installing the "Light" version rather than full.  Macs no like full version.

7.  After install you should be asked to locate the feralheart.exe to actually open the game.  Mine already had it selected and found after install.  Yours should too, otherwise search finder for it.

8.  Move your wrapper to your desktop for easy access, and you should now be able to click on the wrapper and let feralheart open.  You can right click on your wrapper and click "show in finder" then click "drive_c" and then "FeralHeart" to access files and install things like markings.

If your FH is STILL not working..
.
Make sure you tried installing the light version rather than the full, make sure there are no other copies of feralheart on your computer, and if you've done those try experimenting with different or older wine engines, perhaps even a 64 bit engine.  To be frank I haven't fiddled with any engine except for the one I suggested and wine 5.0, so I couldn't recommend you one, I'm sorry!

and we must acknowledge worse case scenario...
feralheart may not run with any new mac updates... FOR NOW.  The last two tutorials I have provided using portingkit and wineskin are both programs that are still actively updated.  It sucks if you can't run FH and get in contact with friends right now, but keep in mind it'll likely be temporary until the developers of these programs swoop in and provide new engines.  There is a glimmer of hope, so don't give up just yet!

Character & Roleplay Tutorials / three basic roleplaying rules!
« on: March 21, 2020, 05:29:57 pm »
1.  Wasn't exactly sure what to call this, but this is some basic guidelines for semi-literate to literate roleplays.  I see these guidelines used quite often, and I feel we could do with a full explanation of them.
2.  If this has been made before I really do apologize, I'm not trying to steal anyone's glory from making this already, I just couldn't find it already done and I wanted a tutorial to hand over to new FH people when they join my roleplay.  So if this has been made twenty thousand times please don't kill me.

This is a small guidebook on three basic rules that most roleplays follow these days.  It can be hard to explain and understand them, so here's a tutorial you can easily chuck onto your roleplay's rulebook.

---

First things first, let's go over the issue with chat character limit.
Because we can only write a certain amount in the chatbox, this has lead to some shortcomings when someone wants to make quite a long post.  It's always fun and nice to be descriptive, but ah, how can we get past that small character limit?
Well, we use what I call 'marks of continuation and completion' to show when someone is still posting and continuing in the next post, and to show when they are done and the next person may go.

These marks can be anything along the lines of -c- , >> , -con- , (c), anything to show that the current and last poster plans to carry on their post in the next chat post.

But how do we know when they're done, and the next person can go? Why,  marks of completion of course! These marks are anything along the lines of -d-, << , -don- , (d), anything to show that the current and last poster is now done and the next user may post.

Here is an example of what this may look like in game.

But one may be wondering, why is this important?  Why is it used?

Because of post-cutting, and post order.

Post-cutting is when it's clear someone is continuing their post still, noted with marks of continuation, and then someone suddenly posts in between and cuts them off.  Don't worry though, most people are understanding, and accidents happen all of the time!  However, it is most roleplays preference that post-cutting is avoided.

Post-cutting is okay in certain circumstances, though.  Here's some examples of that!

1.  If the current poster has stated that it's okay to cut them off, helping speed along a roleplay session.

2.  If you have no part in a current roleplay session that someone's posting in and you're roleplaying with a completely different person that isn't currently posting, it might be fine to go ahead and post.  Still, in this instance, it's best to just ask permission, not everyone wants interruptions in their posting.

A general rule of thumb is just never post-cut someone you're currently interacting with!

Now you might be wondering, how can one avoid post-cutting?  How do I know when it is my turn to post?

Some roleplays use a little nifty thing we call post-order.

Post-order is simply assigning an order to current roleplay participators so they know exactly when they should go.  With a post-order made before each roleplay session, you can let everyone get equal speaking and action opportunity.  Without post-order, the fast typers get to go the most, and that's a bit unfair.
An example of this is establishing max, tom, and sally is the order.  Max will post, and after a mark of completion, Tom will post.  Sally can post after Tom completes, and then the order restarts.

If you have trouble remembering post-order, you can ask someone to note it at the top of their in game bio, and write it down somewhere like your own bio or a piece of paper.

Hopefully these three guidelines will help you get into roleplaying more, good luck anyone seeking to utilize them!

More than a few people have had issues running good ol' FH on mac computers using playonmac, as playonmac has become more and more outdated.

This is a second solution featuring porting kit, and it is a safe program that I've used myself!  Please let me know if you have any questions.  I'll try to add some screenshots to each step if need be.

1.  Just in case it doesn't automatically download this version of wine for you, go ahead and download this https://dl.winehq.org/wine/source/5.0/wine-5.0.tar.xz If you can't open tar.xz files, you can get the Unarchiver download opener for free here https://theunarchiver.com/ .  I use it, it's super fast and helpful and safe.  If the Unarchiver doesn't work for you for any reason, PM me and I'll try to zip up the wine version for you!
You don't need to do anything with the installed wine version files or folder, it's just there for porting kit in case it doesn't automatically download your selected wine 5.0 version.

2.  Next download theportingkit here http://portingkit.com/download .  When you open it, you may get a message about the porting kit needing to update itself, I believe most people get this message and you can ignore it.

3.  Upon downloading, open and click library and then click New Custom Port, naming it whatever your heart desires or just FeralHeart.  (I already have FH installed so i've named it feralheart2)

4. Keep clicking next until installation advanced settings.  Do not select any dependencies, leave the window system to your mac driver, and this part is most important, click on the engine drop down menu and click WS9Wine5.0, only this version!  Not staging!

(see the 5.0?? just click that! nothing else!)

5.  It'll then ask you about the install location.  The default location that it has set should work fine, however I would maybe make sure you've uninstalled your playonmac version first.  Click next.

6.  Next it will ask you to select your feralheart installer.  You should have this downloaded already, but if not just fetch it from the downloads page here on the site.  Go to downloads and select the installer.

7.  After all is installed, it will ask you select the feralheart executable, the file that will actually start the game.  It should open the now installed feralheart folder for you, so all you need to do is click feralheart.exe !

8. And look at that, installation was successful.  Now feralheart should show up in your porting kit libraries tab.

To open the C drive (exports, media etc for markings installations and such) all you need to do is click that tiny down pointing arrow at the bottom right of the feralheart tab you see there, and click open C drive, then install things as normal (:  If you can't see the arrow, try right clicking the game too.

annnd I have a nice lion texture SOMEWHERE but need to search through my ten mediafire accounts ): so expect to see that here soon.

All textures are made with commercial use images in a photo manipulation method.  Commercial use means you can use these for commissions, however, I request that you credit my dA rookfox and my in game user leda.
Failure to credit will ruin it for everyone, I will delete my downloads if you can't respect that.  "Credit to original creator" is not credit.

If a question is asked that's answered in a download's read me, forgive my curt reply of "see the read me" as I haven't the time to repeat something I already wrote ):  But if you don't understand something, by all means I will help.

If you like my texture work, maybe check out my cheap preset commissions.  You can request your own custom texture, which will be separated from the preset too so you can use it on your other presets, just for you!

SITE :http://blackthorn.boards.net/

WELCOME TO BLACKTHORN!
This role play centers around two clans, WillowClan and BoarClan, who dwell within the vast lake territories of Blackthorn. Our role play is literate, semi-realistic (realistic characters, but some spirit interactions), aiming to be active and long term, and beautifully mapped with a lag adjustable map pack.

Here in Blackthorn, we aim to offer a community where people feel entirely welcome and included. We aim to allow more freedom in characters, without ridiculous constrictions that are hard to follow. We aim to give a classic warrior cats vibe from our beloved books, the ability to have wholesome interactions and interactions that mean life and death, the Stars and the Dark Forest. We also aim to sprinkle a bit of our own unique touches to traditions, backstories, and more, whilst still maintaining that classical vibe. Generally, we want a place for everyone to have the chance to make friends and play out wholesome storylines with their characters, whilst also having the option of participating in our unique plot involving spirits, a dark secret shared between the two clans, and a curse.

But for now, that's all we'll reveal. Because here at Blackthorn, we believe in allowing users to realize and fully experience the upcoming storyline through their own joining and participation. Our plotline has secrets, secrets that shall be revealed with time and our growing member base.

Before we go on to joining information, let us go over the basics of either clan!

BOARCLAN
Started by Boarstar many years ago, BoarClan prides themselves on accepting only the strongest and bravest warriors, and nothing short of that. They believe a true warrior is strong and belongs to the wild and deep forests. A true warrior is unbothered by the feeling of water and leaves on their fur (which in turn makes them kind of stinky and dirty!) and is instead only concerned with the growing unity and sheer brawn of their clan. They will accept a kittypet, but reluctantly, and may force them to train longer even if they're an adult. BoarClanners are elusive and smaller in number to their sister clan, but they are much larger and even sometimes more well fed.
A BoarClanner's special tradition is an evening of spars and brawls, wrestlemania but cat edition
WillowClan has a strong distaste for BoarClan's way of life, but respects it. The biggest discourse BoarClan has with WillowClan, is BoarClan is not against killing a severe code breaker, a threat or a traitor. They never needlessly kill and only do so for the protection of their clan, but WillowClan refuses to kill and believes this to be a disgrace. At this point, BoarClan has agreed to disagree with them.

Currently lead by Quillstar / RustedRaven.

WILLOWCLAN
Dwelling in the grassy, rocky, two-leg inhabited wilds of Blackthorn is WillowClan. They believe a warrior is wise, graceful, even to some extent "neat." Although some are more stubborn than others, WillowClanners tend to be more thoughtful and less impulsive. They do not actively spar or brawl each other, though still sees defending their borders as highly important; any scent of stinky fishy BoarClanners and the leader will march right up and spit on their dirty fur! Well, not really, but there could be drama at the gathering.
WillowClan accepts kittypets with a warm welcome and does not enforce strong training on them, just normal apprentice training. Because of their welcoming to kittypets, they have grown to larger numbers. WillowClan tends to be quite nocturnal, given that they live so close to two legs and must be concealed.
Almost all WillowClanners see BoarClanners as dirty, fishy, impulsively violent cats, but this is because WillowClan all in all is somewhat snooty and thinks they're above everyone else. They speak poorly of BoarClan, but not to their faces.

Currently lead by ___star / Leda .

If interested in joining, all you'll need is a realistic warrior cat character (some varying designs allowed, any eye color allowed.) Our environment is pretty loose, and so we allow names from the UK, US, and Canada. African, oceanic, and desert based names will not be allowed.
You can send a request to Blackthorn Warriors. (with a period) in game, or join our discord at tinyurl.com/blackthorninvite
We do not have any complex means of joining and accept all willing to comply to our rules (:

If you're still not convinced this roleplay is for you, then I'll leave you with some map screenshots!  Fun fact, these maps have been tested and little to no lag was reported, but just in case we will soon have a lag help version of the map.

A reminder that we still have auditions for the other clan leader open until November 7th

We've completed and fleshed out more about our clans and their camps, and now we're confident in going public with this project.

But unfortunately, that's all we'll reveal. Because here at Blackthorn, we believe in allowing users to realize and fully experience the upcoming storyline through their own joining and participation. Joining early will allow you to attend our opening plot event and get a first look at what secrets the lands of Blackthorn hold.

We hope to see you there, early joiners!

I'll now leave you with some map previews!  It is currently not out, but it's getting there pretty quickly!

AUDITIONS SHALL CLOSE NOVEMBER 7TH!  ALL AUDITIONS BEYOND THE 6TH WILL NOT BE COUNTED.

Our roleplay is not yet openly recruiting, but we do need a leader. As some know I already tend to the H550 role play and it's reopening, so while I am doing the map/site/discord work and helping with the organization of Blackthorn, I simply will not have the time to lead it's clan.

Before we officially open and get going, we need a leader for our WillowClan.  It's opposing clan, the wildling cats of BoarClan, is lead by RustedRaven.

Let me tell you about WillowClan, it's sister clan, provide screenshots of it's camp, and a bit about our role play and then we'll get to it's leader's application, which you may submit down below.

WillowClan is a WindClan meets ThunderClan group, with lean but sleek cats who hold pride in their unity and strength and have adapted to their partially forested, partially grassland home.  Their clan dwells closer to more two-leg places and they tend to be more accepting of kittypets than their sister clan, BoarClan is.  The Clan will canonically be a little more populated and less elusive than BoarClan, but both have equal strength.  Their skills mainly include the ability to climb, run, and remain hidden even in the open.  They tend to have more herbs available to them due to the two leg gardens, and so BoarClan often makes trades with them for their herb stock.  WillowClanners tend to come off as a little pompous in their own way, believing that BoarClanners are "mucky" and "dirty" and "wild."  Of course each WillowClanner is allowed their own personality traits, this is just the most common and encouraged theme among the clan.
WillowClan's "special tradition" is an evening of story telling, both StarClan legends and simple made up stories from the mouths of kittens.
Despite living so near water, they turn their noses up at fish and wrinkle their noses at the smell of a fishy BoarClanner.  They are not swimmers, but runners and climbers.

Their sister clan (whom we have a leader for, but I will tell you about them just so you can know their potential antagonists) lives across Blackthorn's Lake, in the more forested regions.  BoarClanners often have a ruffled and wild look to them, and while they do accept outsiders, they tend to force kittypets to train longer and harder.  They often have spars and insist that each cat is large and strong.  This determination of pure strength makes up for their slightly smaller numbers in comparison to WillowClan.
Some of their territory is grassy, but they only hunt there in dire times.  BoarClanners tend to fish and hunt in the undergrowth of their streams instead.
Their "special tradition" is a night of sparring competitions, with the medicine cat serving as a sort of referee.  The clan is active way into the night, and sometimes their yowls keep WillowClan up from all the way across the lake, an issue that is often brought up during gatherings.

As you can see, we already have quite an interesting pair to RP with that will make some fun mini-plots all in it's own.  However, we do have a unique but not too hard to follow plot involving a curse, a dastardly secret shared between the two clans, and the forbidden worship of the Stars... we plan for our plot to remain a secret until it is revealed through the roleplaying of our future members, so unfortunately that's all we can give you for now!

Here's some screenshots of the camp you'll be set in.  It is set in a small patch of woods among their primarily grassy territory, with little puddles and willow trees surrounding it.  The tall and wild weeds and grasses make it a difficult area for twolegs to access, even if they dwell nearby.
The map is going to be large, with mini maps attached to it.  It will come in a lag adjusted, light version for slower computers, but it already shouldn't be too hard to load as it will have mostly default objects retextured by yours truly to look pretty and realistic.  It also features meshes from the talented Cattails, and a few others that will be fully credited in the map's download, of course.

So if the role play concept interests you, let me go over the expectations of your role and provide you, finally, with the application!

EXPECTATIONS/GUIDELINES
- You will be expected to follow our role play rules and guidelines and keep up to date with information, updates, lore, etc.  Your name will end with star, people will default bring questions to you upon joining your clan.  You should be familiar with the RP and able to answer such questions in a timely, appropriate, and "professional" fashion.

- You will be expected to be a role model for the community.  You will lose your rank if you have to be reminded of the RP rules more than once, if you curse too much, are too inappropriate, or generally not helpful to new members needing help.

- You will be expected to have decent activity.  I've always felt a twinge of guilt having to de-rank someone of their position because of activity they can't help.  But unfortunately, even if you can't help it, it's still inactivity and it still holds the entire community back.  The role play will often depend on your presence, so you must keep that in mind.  We'd like a leader who can be on to help recruit and role play a few times a week with excused absences that aren't too often (going on vacation or taking a week hiatus is obviously going to be fine, we're more concerned with consecutive inactivity or unreliability.)

- You will be expected to help recruit for your clan.  We will help you recruit for the first month or two until everything is settled, but after that we'll expect that you're used to it and can get up and recruit without being asked or needing help.

- You will be sought to for opinions or ideas, but to be quite honest we're quite happy with the direction of the plot and such and won't need too much more help with it.  If you are hoping to join Blackthorn to heavily mold it, I will be entirely honest in that it's basic concepts are already rather fleshed out.  We merely need a leader, a helper to get us up and ready.  You will help us initiate our super unique, super dramatic and fun plot events that we have in store, though!

- You will be expected to moderate your clan upon it's opening and report instances that required your interference, any sort of issues will be in a report log and such.  Another mod will be paired with you to help, of course, but you'll still be a vast leadership role in the clan.

- On a final note, you may bring in a friend to play your deputy or your medicine cat but they likely will not be a moderator and may not be able to part of the early joining.  We can discuss your deputy and medicine cat affairs upon your application being picked.

I'd like to thank anyone who applies or is interested beforehand.  It's always a struggle for me to hold auditions, because I hate choosing just one person.  Unfortunately though, we can only have one leader, and please note you may not be picked but we may keep you in mind for a moderator or other clan high rank later on.  You not being picked doesn't say anything about your character or your audition.  Thank you <3

AT LONG LAST, THE APPLICATION.  YOU MAY PM IT TO ME HERE ON THE FORUM, OR SUBMIT BELOW! THANK YOU, BE SURE TO FILL OUT ALL THREE PARTS!

PART ONE, CHARACTER:
Feralheart user/s:

Do you understand you will be asked to direct events for your clan, and said events will depend on you showing up and your activity?

Do you understand that even if it's understandable, staff may derank you for activity if it means it's for the betterment of the roleplay and clan?

PART THREE, "QUIZ" QUESTIONS
(there's really no wrong answers to these but we'd like to see where your moderating style is at.  don't stress yaself.)

1.  Someone joins and their character is exceeding the size capacity and limit we have assigned for all characters.  They refuse to shrink down and insist on being a frost giant cat.  What do you tell them?  Should you make an exception?

2.  Someone in the clan is making everyone uncomfortable by having a character constantly seek romance and a mate.  What course of action would you take for this mate-seeker?

3.  Two users have a public argument in the in game group chat, it seems rather serious.  What kind of things would you say to shut them down?  What would you do if one kept egging the other on?

4.  What course of action would you take if you saw someone recruiting for a role play that seemed to have blatantly stolen themes and ideas from Blackthorn?
