Cat Dragons vs Dog Dragons
« on: April 30, 2014, 03:29:14 pm »
Today we're going to talk about dragons! Yay! Well...how you make your dragon characters specifically.
I've seen lots of dragon characters around during my FeralHeart lifetime, and each person has their own interpretation and approach to making dragons; feline dragons, canine dragons, dragons with bat wings and dragons with angel wings.

How do you make dragons, and what are the reasons behind that approach?

Personally, I use the canine model with bat wings. I find with that model, I can get a nice long narrow snout which is a typical feature in some interpretations of dragons. The bat wings I find are more dragon-ish that the angel wings; generally we see dragons as big scaly creatures rather than feathery.

Definitely feline with bat wings. Mainly because of the resulting appearance. The feline is more bulky, rough and "scary" which creates the effect of the dragon most people see pictured in their minds. The feline model seems more dedicated to when it comes to dragon pieces and you have the dragon ears to go with the whole outlook.

This is a great topic, Flob, very interesting ^^

I used Angel wings on a Feline model.

Why?

The wings were bigger, and more, dignified looking.

The Feline model seem broader in the shoulders, and look like it commanded Respect when I turned it into a Dragon.

Just a personel preference, but I like it this way.

For me it really depends on the type of dragon I am making.
I often use the canine model, just because I like how the head looks more elongated and almost snake-like. slim. (Again, it depends on the type of dragon you want)
But for the larger, more ferocious appearing dragons, the feline model does give it a bulkier feel.
In general, I do prefer the canine model.

If you made a feline that wasn't really on the heavy side, I think you could get the sleek build of a dragon along with sharp claws and tiny ears, which can hardly be seen with the "spikes". Plop some bat wings on it and I believe you have a sleek, muscular, sharp clawed dragon with large, dragon like wings.  :P

I don't make very many dragon characters, but when I do I use a feline model and give them bat wings. I usually use the feline model because the thick tail option looks like it could be a reptile dragon's tail.

I personally go for cat dragons with bat wings - if the dragon I'm making is realistic.

Though, if push comes to shove, most of my characters are either feline/canine based because I don't like the look of trying to make a horse/deer/dragon etc. from the models we have. c:

I typically make mine canine with bat wings for the same reason as you honestly. Though, if I make a feathered dragon, which aren't very common in my perspective, it's still canine but with angel wings.
I have changed my name from sage01 to Aurora01!
