Game Help / Preset no longer has a shadow...? ._.
« on: February 11, 2012, 01:52:48 am »
   Yeaps, I brokered a preset, first time too! Most of mine do what I ask of them. D:<
But this has me totally stumped. I was making a layered preset, and suddenly I realize the side I'm working on no longer has any shading, and the tummy is just as bright as the top. I've literally picked apart my code, and tried deleting things piece by piece, and the only way I got it to show shadows again was to only make it one layer...here is a sample that looks similar to my code (can't post the exact code because it's for a surprise preset!):
________________________________________________________________________________________________
material preset_?_bodyMatL
{
   receive_shadows on (tried this from Tigg's thread...doesn't seem to solve it)
   technique
   {
      pass
      {
         texture_unit
         {
            texture colortest.jpg (This layer is solid, and scrolls)
            tex_address_mode wrap
            filtering trilinear
            colour_op replace
            scroll_anim 0.0 0.1
         }
         texture_unit
         {
            texture test.png (This has transparent spots on it, and stays put)
            tex_address_mode wrap
            filtering trilinear
            colour_op alpha_blend
         }
      }
   }
}

   I've looked at all the preset tutorials on here, and some on dA, but still can't seem to spot my problem...any other preset makers out there that spot my messup? I'm getting a bit frustrated by it, and would be somewhat sad if I just had to accept that my preset can no longer have any shading ingame. I can "shade" my character in...but wouldn't look the same as the moving shadowing provided for the rest of my presets.

Game Suggestions & Ideas / Create a Development Team for Official Maps?
« on: February 01, 2012, 11:36:00 pm »
  Incoming one of Windy's infamous WALLS OF TEXT.

   I know that this has been discussed before, and some new maps added, but I see any real permanent solution to this question that has been confirmed. I know some of the team members and other community members have discussed possible revamps of current maps, or just complete overhauls of them. We did get Sky's Rim, and a few other maps added to the standard package...but maybe more should/could be done?
     I don't mean to offend the map maker(s) when I say I was somewhat disappointed with the standard maps' layouts, and lack of details in them. They just didn't seem to be too creative for the most part, and were very empty. Atlantis has some ruins, but otherwise is all the same color, and virtually empty of anything you'd expect in an ocean environment. No colorful coral or anything to make it feel like there was real depth to the map. Fluorite Plains is one of the major offenders though, being extremely vast, lacking vegetation, and being a big reason for server death.
   I've seen some amazing...and I mean awe-inducing maps made by some of the members of this community. You could tell that they put a lot of love in their maps, and really did their best to make a thrilling, and exciting environment to explore. Any members that have downloaded Red's map pack, or explored some of the maps in the Finished Maps sub-forum can agree with me on that. We have some downright creative people on here, that could do wonders for this game, and really make it an attractive playing environment. We even have members making new meshes and particles that are works of art. Why not let all this talent and creativity work its magic on some of the main maps?

   If possible, I'd love to see some of our best of the best, our most creative, artistic, and affluent map makers and artists be allowed to work on a map patch that could be official for the game. Or if they didn't want to participate in such a large way, give permission for the game to use some of their inventions in official maps to bring a bit more life to them. It would be wonderful if FH had some really creative maps to replace some of the more vacant ones, and more maps attached to each other so people can be more widespread, and explore.
   Putting together a group to work on this could be possibly determined by a contest, where all interested in joining the team show off what they consider as their prize work, their best piece they have created. Judges could be moderators, or people assigned as judges to determine who has the skill and mettle to design pieces/maps/particles/etc. for the game in an official team. There could be a section for each contribution to a map (ex: layouts, meshes, particles, etc.).
   If a contest would be too much of an ordeal, maybe people could be asked to join from the work already created and displayed on the site. There are many finished maps that can be looked at, and maybe people that have gone above and beyond in their designs could be chosen to work on official maps. The only problem with that would be having to scan through all the threads, having to enter all those maps, and trying to determine if the person actually created all those items themselves. That, and great artists could accidentally be looked over, because there are so many to scan through.
   We've got moderators and admins that are very creative, but lack the time to really put their ideas for maps to use with all the other jobs they have to do around here. I think it would be a great help to them, and the community, if some other members were allowed to work on this section of the game.

   Of course, this would all sink if Kovu doesn't agree to the idea. But he seems too busy (or doesn't want to bother) to really work on the maps, so why not let some other members that want to contribute take this over?

Anyway, this is an idea I cooked up in a matter of minutes, so I'm sure it has holes in it, but maybe could be useful in creating some ideas for this place. Also apologies if this hassss been discussed in such a way before. Didn't see a thread for it, so thought I might as well make one.

Discussion Board / What happens when you overwork mods...
« on: January 08, 2012, 04:16:41 am »
Once upon a time, too many people acted derp on the game, and Rimfrost got broken.

"Oh noes!" everyone cried.

"Teh horrorz of eet all!!!1!11" everyone began to shout as they noticed that the brokenz was contagious.

"I can't feel my face! D:" Berserker whined.

Dr. Ramine came to the scene too lateeeee! It was spreading like wildfire!

"Reinstall!" said Dr. Ramine, then she shot rainbows from her face, and all was good in Feral Heart.

The end.

This story is based on real events. Names, characters, places and incidents either are products of the cake or are used fictitiously. Any resemblance to actual events or locales or persons, living or dead, is entirely coincidental.

LOL, aaaanyway, these are some funny pics I was able to take while running around. This was quite amusing, and it was voted that the story should be posted for others to enjoy. If you have had a case of the BROKENZ, post what happened to you!

Game Help / Exporting Maps = Game Dying
« on: December 29, 2011, 07:50:43 am »
Prior to the patch, I was working on a large collection of maps, but apparently now it seems to cause my game to stop working. Either that, or making weather cycles is causing the issue. It worked before on my maps, but something with the exporting seems to kill them. Anyone else having this issue? Or know how to fix it?

Edit: Dec. 29, 2011
I am having issues with the mane files giving a weird white fuzzy outline, so they won't look as intended. I'm not sure how to fix this yet, so if you choose to use my fox presets, I suggest not putting manes on them. They may look a bit silly otherwise. XD

Currently Fixed. If you ever have any problems with my presets, feel free to message me or post on my thread.

To see my characters in the game when I'm running around, download from the link below, and put the .fhp files in your "presets" folder, not "my_presets." And that's all you have to do! To download my public presets, look under their pictures, or up here. If they have a link, it means they are ready to download! For instructions on their download, see the bottom of my post.

Public Fox Presets

Announcement:
1/19/12

I am currently working on a hyena preset, but not quite sure how well it's going, I'd really love some feedback from people on how they think it could be improved, or what is missing, since I feel like something is. She won't be up for download probably for another week or so until I figure out if this is her final look.

Below are my finished presets.

I've only done a few presets so far, but the first I had to do was make one of my namesake, Windance.
I created her waaay back when WolfQuest first started, and her markings have remained somewhat the same since then. Her character was actually copyrighted back in 2009!

For her preset, I did use the shading available for the body from the game, but had to make the tail one myself.

She was known as being the pudgy wolfie that'd eat almost anything, which hasn't changed one bit.
Found an old Impressive Title pic of her!

Foxtrot
Foxtrot's preset also used the texture in the game, besides the tail and mane which I make myself. I also made him a mane file, but not sure if I want him to have bangs or not in this game. He had them in IT, but may be too much on this.
Foxtrot is another one of my fave characters I made, he even had a teeny poem to go with him:

Foxtrot, Foxtrot,
The fox that likes
to yip a lot!
When I'd play as him, he'd have a speech impediment, and  always had to have a "yip" or a "yap" in each sentence...which is why I don't play him too often. It can annoy a few people. :P

Berserker
Berserker was my first, and only evil character I made way back on Impressive Title. I made him to go with the Graveyard map I made (when it got in the patch I freakin' felt like I won an award XD). He was basically the gravekeeper, and a shepard  for the damned. He was--and looks more like it now--undead, forever cursed to keep the souls of the foulest monsters on earth from leaving the graveyard. There was a little bloodied alter I'd have him perch on, and he'd try to coax curious onlookers to wander near it, in hopes of sacrificing them to calm the lost souls. Yeah, pretty emo character, didn't rp with him often. The screenies don't give him justice sadly. His markings "pulse" with green energy about every second, almost like a heartbeat, and his wings swirl and change color slightly. The vid below the image isn't as good as I'd hoped it would be, but you can at least tell stuff is moving.

Link to the vid on YouTube
Found some old pictures of him, baby pics! XD

Looks like I mixed up his pelt color a bit...but this way I kind of like him more lol.

Dusker/Duskit (haven't finalized the name yet):
This is my work in progress hyena that I think I've finished temporarily. Her coloring isn't too realistic to spotted hyenas, and I may have to edit it later because that may bug me lol.
She's got mottled light spots in right eye's iris, and both sides of her are a different pattern.
Dusker 2.1:

This is Dusker 2.0:

Previous Dusker:

She's still a work in progress, and I'm always welcome to ideas. I'm still not sure if I should keep her this way, or make her look realistic with her coloring.

Here are some generic fox skins that will be down-loadable when I can make it so. The Left is more of a desert fox skin (inspired by the endangered Fennec Fox) and the right is the typical red fox. I may add more colors later, but kinda running out of room for presets. XD.

Edit: Now Downloadable! Click this Link to Download both Skins.

I have this friend I'm trying to convince to join the game...but he likes horses. :S To be specific, My Little Pony, so I said screw it and tried to bribe him by making a preset of his fancharacter lol.

I know people don't like horse rpers all over the place here, but I don't really care. Heck, I was around IT when wolves didn't exist, and we got discriminated for rping that. :/
Not sure if this is the final look yet, emailed it to him to see what he'll think.

I've also had friends that like to rp as horses (although people get flack on here for it), so I thought I'd work on horse presets for people to use if they wanted. So far I've gotten:

Brown Horse

Black Horse

I made the fur texture myself, since I know they have much shorter hair than wolves. It's supposed to look a bit softer, but I may have to improve it later.
If people actually like these, or think they are good enough to make downloadable, I can set something up, and even add more colors if people are interested. :)

INSTRUCTIONS
1. When you download the preset, it will come in a .zip folder, and archive folder. You can unzip the folder, or copy the folders within it.

2. You'll find the folders named "preset_(insert number here)," which will overwrite your preset folder. If you wish to NOT overwrite that specific folder, you'll have rename the folder the preset is in, and go into the preset.material file in that folder and change the number of the preset. The preset will not show up otherwise.

3. After your files are in the correct position, open up Feral Heart and go to Preset Maker. Scroll down to find the folder, click it, and ta da! The preset colors should show up. Check to make sure that the files are working, and nothing is appearing as white or missing, then click export.

4. Log in, and you should be able to edit your character, and find the new export under your preset options! Congrats, you have a new skin!

If you are having trouble getting the preset to work, or have followed the directions but need extra help, feel free to message me and I will help in any way I can.

Game Help / Can't make gates to original maps (ex. Bonfire Island)?
« on: December 24, 2011, 10:55:16 am »
I'm making a custom map, and I've got all my portals to the other custom maps working, but can't seem to get a gate working for any of the maps that are originally there, such as Bonfire Island. Does anyone know how to do this? I've tried naming the gate several things and none of them have worked.

I've tried:

fhBonfireIsland.fhm
fhBonfireIsland
BonefireIsland

None of these work. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong here?
