Hoy, I read you can't make transparent characters - if you just plain don't want to that's fine, but if you don't know how, it's easy:

at the part of the material file that says "texture_unit", highlight it and paste this:

         lighting off
         cull_hardware none
         cull_software none
         scene_blend alpha_blend
         depth_write off
         texture_unit
